I'm not a gun fanatic, I'm in the UK so largely against personal firearms, however I don't understand how these vessels do not carry lethal force where their crew or ship might be in critical danger. The Captain of a vessel in international waters is perfectly entitled to defend his vessel, including the use of lethal force if he deems it necessary. It's about time the insurers (Mostly Lloyds of London) got tough on operators when it comes to vessels being able to defend themselves, or more specifically their insurers risks...

This doesn't happen so much in Somalia as container ships avoid the area like the plague - Phillips should have as well but deliberately ignored piracy warnings. Nonetheless, as long as there is civil war and widespread poverty in Somalia, there will always be piracy, regardless of whatever coalition forces are mustered against it.

Imagine if the ship's crew had rifles on board at least even 1 AR that could've prevented this hijacking or scared off the pirates, rather than relying on some water hoses and flares... while armed security or PMCs would be idealy, although expensive, at least allow and have firearms on the boat for your crew, whether they be personal or company provided(with proper training) especially if you know you are travelling in waters/areas where pirates and hijackers are known to be at

Explain to me - how come that every single ship that sails in pirate territory isn't equipped with heavy guns for these occasions? Literally one M2 Browning .50 cal heavy machine-gun could "outshoot" pirate's small firearms and poke a few dozens holes in their boats. It's not like one gun with few thousands rounds of ammo and one or two skilled gunners in crew per ship would be that pricy for an international cargo companies.

I don't know what's more surprising. The fact that the ship had no armed guards when going around the Horn of Africa or that help took as long as it did to arrive. One hopes lessons were learned. Not much point in having military deployments all around the world if they can't deal with a couple of teenagers armed with AKs and they need to wait for special forces to arrive from the US.

Plot twist, Pirates don't respect the law and carry guns so Captain Phillips and crew decided to also carry guns. Pirates approach and instead of fire hoses they fire machine guns with warning shots. Pirates leave, move is over, no one is injured.

It's illegal and not allowed thus why Piracy is an issue. If you could sail around the world with armed security this would never happen.
