Fun fact: the Haiku in game are actually another, lesser known form of poetry called "waka" that are more appropriate to the time period than haiku. One of the localizers wanted these to be called "waka quests" instead of haiku due to it being less anachronistic, but this was rejected due to how haiku are more well-known outside of Japan. As a compromise, of sorts, they are called waka in the Japanese dub.
@StCerberusEngel
@StCerberusEngel 5 ай бұрын
I would have to agree they should've been called waka. If need be, they could specifically call them "Waka Poems" to give better context. They had to know the weebs would be playing this. lol Personally, I play with Japanese dialogue, so maybe the subs can be tweaked to correct that.
@graycap111b
@graycap111b 5 ай бұрын
It's not just haiku that was corrected in the Japanese dub. I don't remember 'katana' ever being uttered in the Japanese dub. Jin's sword physically looks like a katana (which is anachronistic) but is always called a tachi in the Japanese dub. If this game could be modded in PC, a "historically-accurate models and English text" mod would be awesome.
@StCerberusEngel
@StCerberusEngel 5 ай бұрын
@@graycap111b A more accurate sub for those playing in Japanese would be appreciated, for sure. Though the anachronisms aren't too big a deal in this case, since it's not supposed to be historically accurate as much as a tribute to samurai dramas. I mean, if they were going for accuracy, Jin should've been using a bow (yumi) or some kind of spear (yari) in the opening scene. Nihonto are fallback weapons for close encounters. If Jin could use a polearm it would've been interesting, but they're going with the popular image of the samurai wielding his uchigatana for the sake of a theme so...🤷‍♀

One of the most beautiful and brutal video games ive ever played. The story,the characters the beautiful country. Mountains, blossom falling from trees. And the absolute devastating combat. Game is a 10/10 in my opinion. I bought a PS4 Pro for this game.
@StCerberusEngel
@StCerberusEngel 5 ай бұрын
Not just foxes. If you see a yellow bird, follow it. Remember, Jin's father is the wind at his back, and his mother, the birds in the trees. There's a ton of things to explore in this game. Btw, you can pet the foxes. Look for them after praying at the Inari shrines. It's definitely a romanticized view of samurai through the modern idea of bushido, but I like how Jin is functioning as both ninja and samurai since a lot of if not most ninja would have been samurai themselves historically. Media tends to separate the two for the sake of drama, but using the blurring of the line between adherence to tradition and pragmatism for a greater purpose is a great use of theming to combine the two. I can see a lot of my own karateka background in this in terms of philosophy. It's absolutely worth doing all of the stories of your allies. There are so many great characters in this. And they're important to the main campaign. Also, the legendary storyteller that you passed in the temple is one of the best things in the game! You get your best gear from them and the tales surrounding them are awesome! My Nihongo is pretty bad, but if I ever do make it to Japan, I'd love to find a nice rural onsen, preferably off the usual tourist path. Ideally in Okinawa since I'd like to visit the origin place of my karatedo. I'd also love to see Aokigahara. It seems like such a beautiful place. And of course, I'd have to stop by some stores at Akihabara. Can't take a nerd to Japan and not do some browsing at Electric Town. I know otaku has a negative connotation, but we'll wear that badge with pride in the west. And I'd love to visit Watatsumi Shrine at Tsushima. It looks like an amazing place to just take in the environment. In the last video you mentioned how surprising it is to think that our nations were fighting only 80 years ago. As much of a shame as it is that it had to result from that, I'm glad that we can communicate and share our cultures with each other the way we do now.

Fans have wanted an Assassin's Creed set in Japan for years. With Ghost of Tsushima's success, Ubisoft probably thought it was time to do something similar but instead of trying to outdo Ghost of Tsushima in historical and cultural authenticity, they decided they'd rather meet some pointless checkmarks at the cost of authenticity. Historical and cultural authenticity was supposed to be Assassin's Creed's strong point, too, even though it's a historical fiction. It was even Ubisoft's chance to fix the image of the shinobi but they also dropped the ball by cramming a lot of inaccurate tropes on Naoe.

Some random tips: Yellow birds lead you to certain things at random throughout the game world (Hidden hot springs that increase max health, Bamboo striking posts which increase max resolve, Haiku spots that give headbands, swords and headbands found in the open world and will even perch near buildings with mongol artifacts) Foxes lead you to Inari Shrines that give you charms When riding through certain fields Jin will reach down and touch the high grass Duels are a pure test of blade skill The Hero of Tsushima Armor is one of the strongest armors in the entire game, defensively speaking as the reduction in damage is VERY large On the Dualshock 4 (PS4) controller there is a way to bow, not sure how on xbox controller, it can trigger some really cool scenes if you keep an eye out for a little sign depicting someone bowing typically found near graves, shrines and a dock.

Wait, so the dlc armor Hero of Tsushima is better than fully upgraded samurai clan armor? It couldn't be upgraded so I thought it was just better in the beginning but not later on? I do like it's appearance better though. Also, on Xbox controller, you hold the right directional button and it brings up a little wheel so you can bow, sheathe your weapon, play your flute, and i think something else. My first introduction to Japanese history was Sengoku Musou and that is where I learned some basics about the era, mainly names and some important battles. I found it intriguing and it encouraged me to read more about the period outside the game. Ghost of Tsushima introduced me to an other time I knew about but never truly put my mind in to before. I love how they took the time to explain how Jin slowly transitioned into a more stealthy and less honorable way of combat. He had to learn the hard way that challenging a whole army in an entrenched castle out in the open in honorable combat is a good way of asking to just get killed. And when you do start getting more and more into the more stealthy tactics, the honorable way of fighting isn't outright disregarded as well. Both have their flaws and uses and if you want to release the tight grip the mongols have on Tsushima, then you'd best learn to utilize both effectively.

How satisfying to watch you enjoying this game and your cultural insight is something westerners should appreciate and learn from ( I'm UK ). I think Japanese is a beautiful language and if i was younger would love to learn ( 65 yrs old ). I hope you play through so much more of this game.

This is what I've been looking for since the game came out. A true Japanese perspective and how positive it is. I'm learning so much from the terms you're using like "mono no aware", "kamige", the translation of the Japanese dub parts that aren't subtitled, "onsen" culture etc! Thank you!

This is the best game playstation ever produced. Sucker punch mopped the floor with Uncharted, 4 The last of us, GoW Ragnarök, Horizon FW and even Days gone in Ghost of Tsushima. Ghost of Tsushima is on par with The Witcher 3, Skyrim, Mass effect 2 and RDR 2. Can't believe some people still haven't played it!

What really made it sweeter was this game practically outdid The last of Us 2 and Sony promoted the hell out of that game but it ended up with mixed reviews while ghosts of tsushima people were complaining about not finding a physical copy because the game was that good😂

I am glad to see you playing more of this game. If you want to honor Japanese culture and experience it then this game is the best way to do so. They did their homework when making this game and they hired Japanese actors for all of the characters in the game. Like for instance, Jin is played by Daisuke Tsuji. I have a deep spiritual connection to Japan and anytime I see anything that offends the culture I get very upset, just as I said on one of your previous videos that I will not be buying the new assassins creed game. I tell people if they want to play an assassins creed game in medieval Japan, play Ghost of Tsushima lol.

I still remember when this game first came out, even Japanese fans went crazy over this game that they couldn't find a physical copy anywhere. but I think the most flattering was the creator of the Yakuza series he was thinking "we should have came up with this idea" it was so funny.😂

Loved every minute of this again. I was really hoping you would continue this series so thank you. Also, a little tip - you can use the touch pad on your controller to preform different acts. Swipe down to bow and you will get Jins thoughts if you bow to dead Japanese or at shrines. Swipe right to sheath and unsheathe your katana, you will get a cool animation if your katana has blood on it after a battle. Swipe up to make the wind blow and point you in the right direction. Hope this helps, and thank you for making this as educational as it is enjoyable.

the folks who made this game really put the extra effort in, there are lots of 'Japanese-inspired' games that don't get even close to how hard this game works to present a vision of Japan that feels genuine

Fun fact about this game, earlier you accidentally killed a deer and thought could get some resources from it. But you can’t because in Japan, deer are considered sacred and are not to be harmed. Especially in Nara. The devs took this into account and made it so we wouldn’t be inclined to kill deer in game by not giving us anything for it. Ps. I’ve been to Nara. It was fun, and the deer are everywhere.

LOL same. For a split second I thought I could hunt deer the way Connor did in AC3. But when I took a look at the satchel and saw that the hides were listed as *predator* hides (deer are no predators), I felt horrible. I just bowed to the deer and hightailed it outta there. 😂

I rememeber being super suprised that the Japanese people used hot springs to bathe at first lol. In America we have hot springs too, but they'll kill you if you try to get into them and people die every year from falling into them (look up Yellowstone's "Old Faithful" if you're interested). They smell like farts too 😂😂

I am still half-way through the video and don't know if you know this. If you see a yellow bird, follow it for some goodies that might be shown in the map. During one of the earlier flashbacks, Jin's caretaker describes his father as the wind and his mother as the bird.
