These Japanese puzzle boxes are the reason I started making puzzle boxes myself.

My grandparents brought a couple of these puzzle boxes home Japan in the early 1950s. My brother and I had great times figuring them out...

Beautiful and intricate craftsmanship. I really like how the box is a red herring, with the real prize in the lid.
@phantombear19794 жыл бұрын
Rexstocephir XIII the coin might clink and give away the compartment, but you can keep some high confidentiality documents in there, folded once or maybe twice. Ingenious design.

The box is probably worth more than what is in it. You see those patterns? Those are wood mosaics, arranged from different wood types, glued together and sliced into sheets. There's more craftmanship in those alone than most of us will ever achieve.
To Hakone Maruyama- could you upload a demonstration of the 125 move puzzle box?
@randomname79845 жыл бұрын
That won't happen. The 125 move box they mention was made by Master Craftsman Yoshio Okiyama many years ago and won an award for having the most moves of any traditional Japanese puzzle box. It's a valuable collector's item, work ten to twenty thousand dollars. Hakone Maruyama keeps theirs in a big glass display case with a ton of other awesome, rare puzzle boxes.
@randomname79845 жыл бұрын
Meant "worth," not "work." BTW Okiyama-san passed away about 18 years ago.
Yeah I would be screwed because I would've done forgotten how the hell you open this thing...XD However it is a very beautifully designed puzzle box and I applaud this man for being able to unlock it! X3

All i see is "smash it" and how he only has 5 yen. And finger condoms.... Nobody ever coments on the pattern, or craftsmanship or even says "huh. neat" It's a nice box that has an interesting puzzle mechanism (well this mechanism is somewhat basic but it's still nice

the Video itself is made by "Hakone Maruyama Inc." - They have an own Website to order. I already own 1 (28+1) box and 2 more are now on their way to me. The Company gives an excellent Service, the Quality of the goods is very fine.........The boxes are sent by Express Mail within 3-4 days overseas.

When I read that these boxes can have up to 300 steps of manipulating them until they are open I thought these would be unique and non repetitive steps.
@randomname79845 жыл бұрын
This is a traditional "Ohkawa-style" puzzle box, and 125 moves is the maximum number of moves for that style of box. Newer, non-traditional puzzle boxes can have more than 1,500 moves. If there were that many steps without any sequence to solve it would be beyond tedious to solve. Even a 324 move box has a specific sequence to solve it, but just making that number of moves takes so long you'd get bored.
How did I end up here? At least I got to practice my japanese counting

To those who're commenting "Smash it." You can keep some fragile stuff like a super expensive dish or a vase inside the box so that if someone not the owner of the box tries to steal the stuff and smash the box, the owner would lose his treasure but the theft also can't win it. ALSO I'm so disappointed by comments like "why is he wearing a condom on his finger?" I hope they're joking or they're fucking stupid.

HAHA Yeah I use those finger socks a lot and the rubber joke never goes away. But if you're unfamiliar with something surely you'll be amused. No matter where are you from. When I came to Japan in the mid 90s my Japanese colleagues at work were amused when they saw me flossing my teeth. Everybody said that they never used it. In their lives. I was like, really???
