Get 10% off (save up to $44!) your own authentic Japanese snack box from Bokksu using my link: bit.ly/3dkty50 and code MISSMINA10 (Update as of 10/2020: Due to a change in the Japanese postal system, Bokksu will no longer offer free shipping to US orders.) Thanks to Bokksu for sponsoring this video! Paid partnerships help me to continue making videos and save up for future trips so I can film and share more awesome places around the world. During these challenging times, I've been making donations to small businesses and nonprofit organizations, so paid videos give me more resources to further contribute to causes I believe in. I personally love Bokksu's curated boxes with informative guidebooks and hope you enjoy their delicious selection of snacks as much as I have ❤️ Note: This video was filmed in July 2019. I'm releasing backlog of travel vlogs during this pandemic as we are not traveling at this time.

Mina, that hanging dried ball is called sugidama and it's made out of cedar! They're traditionally hung outside of sake breweries when a new batch of sake is made. When hung, the sugidama is fresh and green and you can tell how old the sake batch is by how dried out the sugidama is outside.

The ryoken that I stayed at was in the middle of the mountains and took a really long time to find the van to take us there (yes a white van). But it was worth it. We got a 3 floor room with an outdoor shower and private onsen. It was completely covered with trees and you couldn't hear anything other than nature (birds, wind, and a creek below). I highly recommend it when you go to Japan. It also came with dinner and breakfast the next day. There was even a traditional Japanese robe that they let you borrow (females can choose the color, unfortunately males had one color).
@fedyf31714 жыл бұрын
Hey I wanna ask can you go to most of these ryokens without knowing japanese, like would that be a problem?
@jen4dougie4eva4 жыл бұрын
@@fedyf3171 so i went to one last year and I only had thank you, please, those kind of phrases memorized. I communicated with the owners with lots of hand actions and smiles. Didn't really have an issue! Ended up having full conversations in the baths with Japanese ladies where we didn't speak each other's languages either. You'll make do!

The powdery cookie at 3:00 is normally served with the green tea, more typically the matcha green tea. The big leafs ball at 13:33 is a Sugidama and it is usually installed in front of a sake distillery. They will put a fresh green ball of cedar leafs when they start a new batch of sake and keep it as the sake ages. The color of the ball will indicate the age of the sake. If you go back, try to visit Kyushu. The country side is really beautiful and less touristy. The hotels or other hosting facilities are usually putting more efforts to welcome tourists and there are some hidden gems to discover. I particularly like the pottery villages as the region is so beautiful and if you like crafts and art, you will be spoiled. The best is to rent a car as you need to move from village to village. The region is also one of the best onsen regions of Japan.
