The commonly known "Megane Bridge" at Usui Pass is a 91m long, 31m high, brick four-arch bridge over the Usui River, and is a representative structure of the pass. It was completed in 1893 (Meiji 26) as a railway bridge over the pass, and its official name is "Usui Third Bridge". Approximately 2 million red bricks were used in the construction of the bridge, which required highly advanced technology at the time, and it was used as one of the bridges between the former Yokokawa Station and Karuizawa Station on the Shinetsu Main Line of the Japanese National Railways when the section was under the Abt system railway (a type of railway used in places with steep gradients). The design is a series of arches, and the appearance of the multiple arches connected together is reminiscent of the frames of glasses, and the bridge was nicknamed "Megane Bridge" due to its beautiful shape. There are bridges No. 1 to No. 13 between the former Yokokawa Station and Karuizawa Station, and of these, bridges No. 2 to No. 6 made of brick are designated as Important Cultural Properties by the National Government. Usui Pass also plays an important role in the history of Japanese railways. This pass has many steep gradients and sharp curves, making it a difficult place for trains to operate, so special equipment and technology were introduced to cross the pass. The Megane Bridge was built as part of this, contributing to the efficiency and safety of rail transport, but with the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen in 1997, part of the old Shinetsu Main Line was abolished and the Megane Bridge also finished its role. Currently, the "Abt Road", a promenade where you can walk on the bridge, has been developed and it is a popular tourist spot for many people. This place, where you can enjoy beautiful scenery in harmony with nature throughout the four seasons, is a symbol of the development of Japanese civil engineering technology, and its beautiful design and solid structure continue to fascinate many people. Recently, it appeared as the location for the final episode of the drama "Believe - A Bridge to You -" and is also known as the setting for the fifth All Japan Rally Championship "MONTRE 2024".
