When we first met Sakuran, she was a high school student living in a small town in Japan's norther most prefecture, Hokkaido. She was on a visit to Tokyo when a shop owner told us to drop everything and come to his shop right away. He had a new customer who we absolutely must meet. We rushed over and were greeted by a young Japanese woman - dressed in handmade fashion, silver platform boots, and a painted face - the likes of which we had never seen.
Though young, it was clear Sakuran was one of a kind from our first meeting. She threw all rules out the window and wore what she wanted to wear, regardless of how extreme it might look compared to other fashion on the street. Over the next year, we got to know her during her regular visits to Harajuku. She worked at a part time job in Hokkaido, saved up money for several months, then spent all of that money to visit Tokyo for a weekend. In addition to her fashion, we were impressed with her determination to be part of the Harajuku fashion scene a thousand kilometers away.
Over the next year Sakuran became friends with many Harajuku kids, shop staff, and other Tokyo street style personalities. Her confidence and styling skills also evolved as she grew closer to graduation from high school. Eventually, she graduated from her small town high school and was accepted into the honors program at Tokyo's Vantan Fashion College.
Now a student at Vantan in Tokyo and working part time at a popular independent Harajuku select shop, Sakuran remains fiercely unique. She dreams of being a designer, and wants to encourage other people to find what's unique inside of themselves and amplify it.
