We met Kanji on the streets of Tokyo in the fall of 2017, less than a year before this interview. In the months since, he quickly established himself as one of the most extreme and avant-garde dressers of the current generation of Harajuku kids. Without any fashion education (he attends a normal Japanese high school), but with a head full of ideas, Kanji creates most of his own outfits on his bedroom floor.
While we watched him roam the streets of Harajuku in increasingly extreme handmade fashion since early 2018, his breakout came during the spring 2018 Tokyo Fashion Week events. Kanji wore a different handmade outfit every day of Tokyo Fashion Week. Those seven avant-garde outfits - culminating on the final day with a piece called "Mother" that featured three full sized mannequin heads - got noticed by many people, including a battalion of international street fashion photographers.
Kanji is young - and less than a year into his fashion experience - so he's still figuring out his philosophy and future plans. He himself has said that he expects to make mistakes and change direction many times before finding his preferred path forward. In the meantime, he is learning a lot, making friends, having fun, and creating one-of-a-kind fashion that even the famed streets of Harajuku have never seen before.
We hope you enjoy our interview with Kanji. If you're interested in seeing more of his fashion up close or asking him questions, consider following him on Instagram or Twitter.
