Recently Ariana Grande got a tattoo in Japanese. She thought it would mean "7 rings" like her new song, but it actually means a type of BBQ grill in Japanese. This news was also shared in Japan and many Japanese people reacted to it on Twitter.

I still can't wrap my head around the idea that so many people don't take their time to check what their tattoo actually meaning before getting one. Tattoos are meant to be permanent, so why are people not more careful? Ariana could have just share her idea on Instagram and get feedback from Japanese people with almost no effort. People are strange. But if you are interested in getting tattoos in Japanese, it's better to learn Japanese first. My free lessons are here bit.ly/2XwlLf7

what a surprise! he picked up my tweet in Japanese defending her tattoo at 3:48 !! it's pretty obvious that she should've had Japanese ppl to check her spelling or grammar in Japanese before actually getting a tattoo,but as I already said, 七輪 means "seven rings" at the damn same time as it means a bbq grille,so I have no idea in the slightest why some persistent trolls who aren't Japanese are still holding her up to mockery. I just hope they would stop putting her into a breakdown over this tiny little thing.
@lullabying
@lullabying 5 жыл бұрын
some people are upset for legitimate reasons, though. asians who grew up in western countries are frustrated that she is using the tattoo as an aesthetic. actual asians who grew up in the west, including me, are uncomfortable because many of us were forced to adopt english-sounding names so that we wouldn't be looked down upon or made fun of by other westerners. however, the westerners would treat our language as just an "aesthetic" without dealing with people making fun of our heritage on a daily basis. iirc she also never gave an explicit apology about it and threatened to quit learning japanese just because people were telling her why asian-americans felt uncomfortable with her tattoo.

@summerchild5141
@summerchild5141 5 жыл бұрын
9kay It says in the Japanese wiki that there are some theories as to why, but they're not confirmed. One is 七厘 (a similar sounding kanji but used for measurement) was the amount of coal sufficient to grill, or because the part at the bottom of the grill has 7 holes. My family didn't use this so I dunno if these are true. /shrug I hope someone can elaborate!

I read that at some point it's an evolution of "seven ring grill" in that it's a very cheap grill that only cost seven "rin" (assuming "rin" is an old name for Japanese currency that looks like a ring, like Sixpence in Europe, which no longer exists)

The first two Kanji mean "always" or "constantly." The last three Kanji mean "faithful," "loyal," "devoted," and/or "diligent." It's most often read as "faithful."
