I recall visiting my brother in 1991 who attended Waseda's Kokusaibu program. It was the week of graduation and I brought a suitcase of goodies like canned chili and ravioli. We started handing them out. It was quite funny seeing the students rush out to look for hotdogs and buns. Homesickness was in full swing by then. Afterwards, my brother and I spent a month backpacking in southern and central Japan. Shikoku was my favorite. I'm glad to see someone enjoying what the country has to offer.

Hey Anming! 我问你一下 Where did you do your bachelor and what was it? Was your bachelor also in International Relations? I think in some video you said you studied business, is it possible to have masters IR after undergraduate business? PS. I am a China/Japan enthusiast high schooler, trying to figure out the right university path for me. I completely adore your channel! Btw since I am learning Simplified Chinese and would love to learn Japanese in the future, I am very curious about how you managed, learning both Simplified Hanzi and Kanji. Did you already know the traditional characters before learning Japanese? Did you ever use to mix up the two? Sorry if that's too many questions :)
@OrientalPearl
@OrientalPearl 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. I love long comments. I went to business school in America and studied marketing. I learned simplified characters first in Harbin, China and then learned some traditional ones while working at a Taiwanese company for a little while. After all of that picking up Japanese kanji was very easy. The only problem was the reading of the Japanese kanji. It doesn't fit Japanese very well. It basically makes very little sense. So, reading them the Japanese way is still a problem for me. I make a lot of mistakes reading passages from the newspaper out loud, but it doesn't effect my understanding.

Im curious of the courses you can take. I read you can take various courses many places especially if your fluent in Japanese you can go into any career. For people who are not theres a few english taught courses/career choices(id like to know those if you have any idea) and that you can go to a university in Japan for English degree easily which is what im very curious about how to go about that or what is needed for it. I backpacked japan june, july, & august 2013 and i put too much hope into my homeland and work that im not taken appreciated for, i went sweden year after, than from 2015 to now it spiral downed with many friends dying, getting illegally kicked out, getting abuse by family and abusive relationship(no longer in), dropping out of college because i have to work to survive and now living check to check barely.....its suffocating and i remember how easily and better i survived in Japan. I was accepted and appreciated more as well. It was life changing. I yearn for the Tokyo sunsets and the ocean bay city. It was easier to be healthy to get a bento for 3$ or ramen for 5$, in USA that be 20$ but ofc course theres mcdonalds and all the unhealthy cheap crap with chemicals🙄 I truly miss Japan. I stare at the sunset from my work SJC airport rooftop ony break everyday. Ive always felt pulled to it. I yearn to live in Japan one day.

It's been a few months and you've probably already made a decision, but as someone who will be starting a masters program at Waseda this fall, I wouldn't worry about grades. I spent a semester at a different school in Japan and as long as you put in the work, you'll receive good grades. And I'm not sure what types of classes would be available for your program as an exchange student, but Waseda has entire degrees taught exclusively in English. I have a friend that is studying comp sci as an undergrad and takes exclusively English classes, while I'll be studying neuroscience and can take exclusively English classes.

I don’t have a list of courses, I was in the grad school so I’m not familiar with their undergrad courses.

Most international students have a full scholarship and free housing. I am one of the only people that pays out of pocket, but that was because of some complex reasons with my enrollment. I talked about it in the video "Why I moved to China and Japan".

Yes, a little bit during the occupation era. There were some communist clubs and support groups on campus in the early 1950s. 60 police officers were sent to raid the campus and capture copies of a communist inspired letter addressed from the students to General MacArthur.
