I have a Marine friend who fought on Sugar Loaf second assault it took 11 attempts before it was cleared. That whole zone was the Japanese training area for artillery and direct fire guns. Most were well dug in for flanking shots down the gullies with crossfire from several position for each path.

Suicidal navy pilots from an enemy that could not train more pilots. Brilliant plan Tojo.
@gandydancer97105 ай бұрын
The pilots used in kamakaze attacks generally had very little training. Trained pilots in the same planes were anyway completely ineffective. So your point doesn't have one.
@flubardus73985 ай бұрын
I remember seeing an economist analysis of Kamakaze attacks. They inflicted more damage and suffered less lose of pilots and aircraft then the traditional tactics by a good margin. His conclusion was that it started to late to be effective.
@gandydancer97105 ай бұрын
@@flubardus7398 My conclusion is slightly different. It was effective, but it wasn't and couldn't be a game-changer. No wonderwaffen was going to change the fact that Japan was going to lose the war pretty much the way it did (unconditional surrender, sort of), short of THEM getting the Bomb, which had a zero possibility of happening.

if the Japanese had focused on US logistics with air and submarine forces, they might have prolonged the inevitable by a year, but the total destruction of the Japanese Navy was always going to happen.
@CB-vt3mx5 ай бұрын
The only winning move for Japan was in avoiding a direct confrontation with the US. But they did not see that not playing was the only option because their focus on decisive battle blinded them to the strategic situation and operational art. A complete waste of life for all involved.

The Germans should talk. Was it not the small US carriers that played a large part in securing the Atlantic against the Germans?

Not noted re Lemay's low level Tokoyo attacks w/o machine guns: Were the gunners left behind as having no job to perform?

48:30 "LeMay had revolutionized bombing technique." Not at all. As in Europe, the USAAF had given up on precision bombing methods and were copying the British.
@gandydancer97102 ай бұрын
@@2Phast4Rocket I nowhere said that the US had not "held on to the strategic bombing". What they abandoned was attempts at precision bombing. Fighter escort practices had nothing to do with this, And LEMAY didn't revolutionize anything. Reread the sentence I disagreed with before you disagree with me,.
