Additional connection between Scotch and Japanese whisky: The Japanese founder of Nikka whisky had a Scottish wife. Her birth name was Jessie Roberta Cowan and she later changed it to Rita Taketsuru. The romantic AMWF (Asian male-Western female) relationship in Japanese whisky was made into a Japanese TV miniseries called Massan.

There was also a political element to this. Japan had been pursuing a western policy since the mid 19th century. Whiskey was part of the products a UK ambassador would typically provide to a foreign government. Traditionally the whiskey had of course been from Ireland. Scottish whiskey was not much of a thing until the late 19th century, with more Irish whiskey being sold in Scotland (along with everywhere else) until the late 19th century. But UK ambassadors increasingly began to provide Scottish whiskey once it became a common thing, for political purposes. Scotland was a secure and loyal region of the UK. Ireland on the other hand a routinely violently anti UK occupation region. The UK state was happy to move away from providing status to Irish distillers, often Catholics, and to the nascent genuinely ‘British’ Scottish industry. Japan following Scottish rather than Irish whiskey culture, including the use of the hated in Ireland industrial column still - the Irish distillers even wanted to ban spirit produced in such a fashion as being called whiskey, calling it a “silent spirit”, which was ironic as following the Irish industry collapse, column still whiskey became associated with Ireland! - was also a nod to the preferred choice of the British Empire.

Nikka From the Barrel: to me an easy sipper with ice for a lazy afternoon. May not be all real Japanese Whiskey, but reliable for what it is.

Now that they have labelling standards it would be cool if they came up with a catchy name
