For yearssss I've heard it but because you understand out of context what the speaker means I've never bothered to look up the finer details behind the -tari form. Now that I'm back to basics and getting my fundamentals right I stumbled across it and it only took one video (this one) to understand perfectly what it does and how to use it. My compliments for the added explanations on how it's not past tense but still have to use the plain past tense form because -masu forms would be weird. On top of that you added a bit of cultural background to the verb by saying that Japanese people like to keep the conversation a bit mysterious and voila: I got all I need to confidently say I understand. I've lived in Japan for a year where they say studying is three times faster, but only now do I feel like I am mastering it and a big part is thanks to you. Thank you! For real!

21:05 Japanese works exactly like a programming language You don't repeat yourself は works like a pointer You mostly reuse the same words and just change the forms (which are also mostly based on combinations of the same few rules) Even though it's mostly easy, you have to read a ton of documentation to use things properly due to many specific functions of words You can convert word types 『する』、『こち』 There are different warning levels (the different words for "you") And there's even a difference between ordered and unordered lists 🙈

I noticed that the exceptions of -iru -eru ending words have this thing in common: the i or e sound in the word is part of the kanji. For example: 切る＝kiる 喋る＝shabeる。Maybe the reason these words doesn't conjugate like a regular iru eru ending word is because the i or e sound is part of kanji instead of a real iru eru ending? Same reason why kirei=綺麗 is not a real i-adjective?

It's been an year, so I guess you must already know the answer. For anyone else with this question, when using て form to list actions, it implies the order of saying is the order of actions. たり doesn't carry any information about order of actions. 昨夜はテレビを見て宿題をして晩御飯を食べました = Last night, I watched TV, then I did my homework and then had dinner(in that particular order). 昨夜はテレビを見たり宿題をしたり晩御飯を食べたりしました = Last night, I watched TV, did my homework and had dinner (Not necessarily in that order)

みさ先生、こんにちは。What is the difference between using this たり form and using the て form to connect verbs? I'm currently studying Japanese online with Yuuko Hanamure of Smile Nihongo Academy, and she taught the て form to connect verbs. For example: きょうは、ほんやをいって、ぎゅうにゅうかって、べんきょうしたいです。"Today, I want to go to the bookstore, buy milk, and study." Is there any difference in meaning if I were to use the たり form? おつかれさまです。:)

@@Jacked_R_Us You mean this sentence? --> "今日は朝ご飯を食べたり、学校に行ったり、日本語を勉強したりします." There must be tari. Using this construction you have to add "tari" to all verbs including last one. And then you put "suru" in any form at the end. So this sentence is correct. I recommend you to watch the Misa's video about "tari" if you haven't watched this yet.

I think other comments on this video pointed this out, so if I'm not mistaken, as was stated in the video, ～たり doesn't require the actions to be in any particular order. You're mainly just listing a bunch of actions (ie, this, and this, and this, and this) If you're using ～て form though to list actions, order does matter since it implies a sequence of events (ie, this, and then this, and then this) If someone wants to double-check my understanding that would be nice, but I believe that's difference between them, and I believe she's alluding to the difference between ～たり and ～て forms at that timestamp. Hope this helps

te form shows the exact order you did something in, so if you said 映画を見てラーメンを食べてゲームした It means that you watched a movie, ate ramen, then played a game IN THAT ORDER However, tari form doesn't specify order, so if you said 映画を見たりラーメンを食べたりゲームした It means that you watched a movie, ate ramen, and played a game, but not necessarily in that exact order, and with an implied "among other things" so it's like saying "I did this, this, and this and some other things too"
