I encountered some truly unexpected behaviors in this intriguing exploration of an open air colony of Japanese honey bees. Watch as the colony suddenly halts their swarm and makes the unusual decision to abandon the queen they've been raising.

My Europeans did this for the first time. I have two open colonies that need to be put in boxes. I'm waiting for the weather to cool so I can box them up and move them to a new yard

I wonder what caused them to change their minds? Fascinating!

i think the shock from being attached to the ceiling and out in the open freaked them out. but then they realized that it was actually a safe spot

Возможно Вы воздухом осушили или застудили яйца и личинки в маточниках, потому пчёлы их убрали из-за негодности. Семья,в любом случае, будет делиться. Таков закон.

With an open air hive, how do you protect it from the giant hornets?
@MariaPetalcorin

We set up nets around them. The bees can pass through but the hornets can’t

Love the videos, though I'd like things someone that normally doesn't bee wouldn't understand to be explained in the videos, like what does "swarming" mean when it's referred to in the video.

Honey bee colonies reproduce by swarming, a process where about one-third to one-half of the workers in a colony leave in a swarm with the queen to set up a hive in a new location.
