That's the thing people need to know before living in countries like Japan. Just because they're friendly doesn't mean they actually like you. Their attitude and behaviour could be because it's part of their job, or they're polite enough to not say anything bad. The politeness and friendliness is superficial, in reality Japan is a very closed culture and is not accepting of foreigners at all. Making a deep connection with native Japanese that is beyond a polite/professional level is super hard in reality.

That superficial politeness applies to anyone outside of your group whether foreign or Japanese. Early on I accepted the fact that no matter how long I lived in Japan there was one group I would never be a part of (being a Japanese person). The quicker anyone accepts the phenomenon of Uchi and Soto the easier and more fun it is to live in Japan.

A positive energy is infectious, and any business who deals directly with the customers should adopt this approach. I've lived in Asia, the states, Europe and its safe to say that Japan is really top-notch in terms of hospitality.

Well western culture hasn't really affected countries like Japan. They are very strict on outside influences like that and Islam and such. I would bet that most of them aren't suffering from pretty much 100% depression rates like most western cultures and trying to change gender etc.
