Thank you for your comment. All of the japanning methods that I’ve used have included baking. That has been my preference I have no experience with no baking methods. If you use that method let me know how it goes. Thank you take care Joe

Just leave it after painting. Cold cure just needs time. Might take weeks/months to dry.

Thank you so very much for your comment. The Finish that the japanning leaves is quite impressive. It's very hard I think it's strong it's shiny very smooth and I think it will be very long-lasting and quite beautiful.

@@JosephHunstad I appreciate the insight. I'm going to try and do this on an axe head and see what the results are.

Great video. Is it possible to sand and polish the finish once it has cured? It seems that Singer did that with their sewing machines.
@JosephHunstad

Thank you for your nice comment. When is the final baking is completed. The japanning has a very high gloss inherently. It certainly could be polished however, and you could probably enhance the shine. Sanding possibly wet sanding but I have never tried that. Consider subscribing. Thanks, Joe.

Yes, from what I've seen, and read, Singer did three dips, three bakes, and three polishes. The first bake was done at 350 F, the second and third bakes were done at 150'F All three bakes were done overnight. They were then smeared with a fish gel (Collagen most likely), decorated with gold leaf and painted, rinsed to remove the collagen, then varnished with copal varnish. according to the article either pumice or rottenstone was used. I've worked with 4F pumice, which seems rather aggressive to me, especially on wood but Japanning might be able to handle it with no problem, (I don't know). I think the article was on one of the pages from : ISMACS (International Sewing Machine Collectors' Society) Good question, Keep me posted if you come across any info. This video has the Ford recipe for Japanning, which might be thin enough to dip the parts into, without a doubt many things were dipped to save time and money.: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r2eliXhqqqmKY7Msi=LHN2DFFiQW2zQtDQ

Japanning seems to be a very good way to keep tools looking good and from rusting out. One question I have is after the process has been completed on the metal tool can the finish continue to be heated up many times and still keep it's tough finish? Reason I ask is I several old Coleman lanterns that I would like to try the process out on. Thanks

Hey there it’s my pleasure. I hope that was useful. It does deliver a really high-quality glossy coat. Interestingly, it was replaced by an enamel paint but during its hay day, it was really quite fantastic durable and shiny. Consider subscribing. Thanks. Joe.

Awesome video and I want to use it asap. Couple of questions. You use and say boiled linseed oil but the options below are cold pressed? is it necessary to use a primer on the part admittedly the surface isn't smooth. thanks

Everything I’ve encountered regarding japanning uses BLO As a very important ingredient. It’s the one I’ve always used I have never used coldpressed so I don’t have any experience with that. When it comes out of the oven for the last Time boy it is beautiful. Please consider subscribing. Thanks Joe

I know it’s not period correct but could I use black enamel in the absence of japanning?
@JosephHunstad
@JosephHunstad 10 ай бұрын
Hey, great question of course you can use that. Panning was used because enamel paint had not been invented yet when a enamel paint was invented the use of Japan and basically went to zero. But if you want to be truly authentic and time. Accurate, Japan is really great but Black and Abel paint looks great also. Consider subscribing. Thanks, Joe.

Hand tool rescue has done some testing, it can get pretty close to the original japanning look but the color will be a bit off because authentic japanning has a hint of brown, it isn't pure black, and it is glossier than enamel, although you can get close if you go with a more matte enamel then clear coat over it. The enamel would certainly be functional though.
