Everything he stated was completely correct. I see people arguing for why it should or shouldn't have been a goal, while the rules technically back it being a good goal, Dahlin got a whistle early in the game after being hit by Rantanen and was completely okay, if "injuries" like that are being whistled, Wedgewood's absolutely should've been whistled, BS call from the refs

Totally agree with Bedsy tho, if you’re gonna blow the whistle for Dahlin you gotta do the same for a goalie

@edschramm6757
@edschramm6757 2 күн бұрын
having just seen the play, it was a fairly doctrinal no-call. what exactly do they call? goalie down, stop the play? the avalanche never had the puck, and it didn't leave the zone, the ref has to believe there is eminent danger to the player to whistle it down without their team controlling the puck. the writhing was pain, not life-threatening injury. they're not even supposed to blow the play if the helmet is off if there is an eminent scoring opportunity, never mind pain. i don't think there was enough of a window between collision and goal for the ref to reasonably be able to kill the play without the defense getting the puck. I'm not at all against them changing this rule, but as the rules exist in their current configuration, this was the correct call. go after the NHL rules committee, not the refs for that. goalie interference? kelly caused the collision, bensen made an effort to avoid it and got knocked into Wedgewood. goalie interference is supposed to be the player has to initiate the contact, which was not the case here. (i say supposed to because sometimes goalie interference is "hang on, THAT is what they're looking at?") he was already falling by the time any sort of contact was made, and without Kelly's contact, bensen most likely wouldn't have touched wedgewood.
@soulknife20
@soulknife20 2 күн бұрын
@edschramm6757 It's at the discretion of the ref. The refs should have used his judgement (poor as it is to begin with) and blown the play dead. Or at least waved the goal off.
@alecfisher2406
@alecfisher2406 2 күн бұрын
@@edschramm6757Lad the goalie was injured, if you see a goalie or even a player move in pain like Wedgwood did, then that play should have been immediately blown dead. They blew a play dead in the first period when Mikko collided with a buffalo player, buffalo didn’t have possession of the puck and it could have been a odd man rush for the Avalanche, as soon as the play was dead, the buffalo player that was hit by Mikko got right back up and was fine, and the reason why Bednar called the goalie interference challenge was because he wanted the ref to do the right thing and reversed the call because of the injured goalie, Bednar even admitted that their was no goaltender interference on the play, he was pissed off that the play was not blown dead, which cause Benson to score.
@tom-dr8co
@tom-dr8co Күн бұрын
@@edschramm6757 listen to what bednar says at the beginning about the inconsistency of these types of calls. The puck was in the corner, not in immediate scoring position. Goalie is clearly injured on the play and they had plenty of time to use their discretion to blow the play dead. If the puck/player was in an immediate scoring position and they didn't blow it dead, fair. But it's in the corner, the only reason it turns into a scoring chance is because they chose to ignore an injured goalie. I'm not sure how you watch that goal and think there wasn't enough time for them to blow it dead. Crazy.
@edschramm6757
@edschramm6757 Күн бұрын
@tom-dr8co 4 seconds from contact to goal. Given that, and that it would take a second for the ref to decide the goalie is actually hurt, let alone severity enough to kill the play, I'm not sure I can agree. Hindsight is 20/20, but let's say the ref takes 2 seconds to decide Wedgewood is actually hurt. By the time he goes to kill the play, he's having to jump out of the way of the guy going for the wraparound.

It was literally just a collision that happened to cause an injury and for player safety should’ve been blown dead when the puck went to the corner. Based on your comment though I’m assuming you thought play should’ve continued while Dahlin was down?

@willno4876 (1) Kelly did in fact knock Benson into the goalie. (2) Colorado didn't have possession of the puck and the play can't be blown dead. If the refs deemed the injury to be serious (ie head injury, bleeding) they can blow dead at any time. This injury wasn't of that nature. They can't blow it dead just because an injury affected a play. When a defensemen breaks his stick should that be blown dead? When a player breaks his skate blade, should that be blown dead? As written, the refs did the proper thing. Weird scenario, but correct.

Also for Benson, he barely even looked in the direction of the net, he had zero clue Wedgewood was injured so that's why he celebrated. The reason the Ref did not stop the play because Colorado Player #17 caused Buffalo Player #9 to into Wedgewood. #17 for Colorado caused #9 for Buffalo to fall over, which led to Wedgewood's injury. Since the helmet of the Goaltender did NOT come off during the play, it must continue until Colorado has control of the puck, since Colorado never got control play MUST continue which allowed Buffalo to score. Yes, many fans believe the play should have been stopped for Goalie injury even if the helmet did not fall off since the Goalie kinda can't save anything during the play. But the Colorado Player #17 was the main cause of the #9 fall if you go back to any game in NHL history when a player gets hurt from blocking a shot or a goalie gets hurt the refs will NOT stop playing until the Team with the injured player stops playing. Welcome to the Rules of the NHL.

Take a goalie mask coming off. Unless there is an immediate scoring chance, REFS ALWAYS blow the play dead regardless of who has the puck. That very same in-game assessment (citing player safety) should have applied here the moment the puck went in to the corner. That's what Bednar is expressing. Especially since other REFS blew a play dead two games ago when the Avs had control of the puck, and that wasn't even the goalie. If player safety is of top priority to the NHL, then any time a goalie is injured, if there is not an immediate scoring chance, the play should be blown dead. That is so easy to review, enforce, and be consistent with.
@RyanGriffore

Not to mention, incidental contact should have been called. Opposing player entered the blue paint and made an abrupt turn into the Avalanche player who proceeded to contact him into the golaie. I would have blow the whistle on that ALONE! Because, the contact with the Avs player was a result of his last section directional change while in the goal crease. It's unreasonable to assume interference on the Avs player, and it's not goalie interference. So again, player safety, once we see the injury, blow the whistle for "incidental contact".
