Not sure this is solely on Jared taking the team farther. The franchise, team and management were the worst in the league when Stafford was here. Lets also not get it twisted. If we had Stafford with the team we have right now, our team would be way better. Stafford is just a better QB, but thats irrelevant. That trade helped us become the team we are, and Goff is our QB.

When there was talks of trading Stafford people acted like that was crazy too. Not paying Goff $50 AAV isn’t crazy. The Lions could keep Goff till 32 years old without giving him a long term deal and would save money doing so. They won’t but could and probably should.

Some of us don’t mind paying him. We have just seen what happens when teams pay a QB that much. Most of the time it handicaps them. Sometimes it works but not often. If we didn’t have so many young guys that are going to need to paid as well. Maybe we don’t believe we are the Chiefs yet. Holmes seems to be creative with cap moves so I don’t know. He deserves what he gets and I like the player. But it’s natural for a fan to worry given our track record as a team.

Because the NFL has a salary cap unlike other sports (to keep the league parity). It is clear because of your other comments about “Maz worrying about how other people spend their money” that you don’t know about the salary cap or understand it yet. I’m not trying to be condescending. Every team has the same amount of money to spend on players and mismanagement of the salary is one of the primary ways a team can sink itself or be a dynasty. The Patriots almost never resigned a star receiver for instance. They just reloaded in the draft and spent the money elsewhere. If you are a team that scouts rookies well and doesnt sign the wrong players to team crippling contracts (think the Lions of the last 30 years lol) you can maintain success.

The starting TE Brandon Pettigrew only played 9 games and had 10 catches for 70 yards and the rushing attack was nothing like we had last year. As a team they rushed for 1400 yards and 11 TDs

He’s been above average here for about a season and a half. And there were still atrocious games last year (ravens and bears) where he looked disgusting out there. When plays break down, he’s toast! He can’t create. If everything is on script, he can make the plays that are supposed to be made but any above average QB can follow a script. I really wanna know what they have in Hooker. (Que the Hooker hate 🙄) but it’d be in the Lions best interest to at least let an offseason play out with him to see where his development is. Goff is a statue. Its not just an issue of 50 mil a year. Its the guranteed money that will make or break the deal. I think he commands at least top 5 money. Nobody wants to see Hooker to display his tools more than me. But we need to resign Goff and deal him in a year or two. Same kind of talk was around Larkin as is with Goff. The fan base doesnt believe he is worth the money he is going to be paid. Or better put, armchair GMs think they need to take less than whats market value. When Larkin's deal wasnt done, there was so many people saying he wasnt worth 8 million a year, and when he signed that he was overpaid. Same with Goff, they expect him to take 35-44 million a year, because he isnt the best QB out there. He is our QB, he is what we have, pay the man. Ok, so can I throw my opinion on super Homer Neal here? Lamar Jackson has had 2 MVP awards to my knowledge, why we lost to KC, well they got Mahomes and are multi-year Super Bowl champs. Goff and Detroit lost to San Francisco with Purdy, who's kryptonite is AFC teams, also San Francisco(super bowl losing team) came back from 18 points to win against Detroit. KC just outsmarted Baltimore, their defensive line just smothered us about every play. Zay Flowers kind of screwed things up too, but any team that deserves to win overcomes that, and Baltimore didn't. Just like how San Fran mentally flanked and defeated Detroit. I'm looking forward to Baltimore and Detroit Super Bowl this year, and if Baltimore beats KC in the process, Ravens victory. But to be fair, I do think Goff is top 10 quarterback, but Lamar Jackson is top 3 baby.

I dont even think its hate its just honest assessment about who he is as a QB. I dont think Jared has had a better statistical season with the Rams than hes had here with the Lions and when you look at his complete body of work the conclusion ISNT that he’s not a good quarterback but moreso that hes a complimentary QB more than Franchise QB hes good when he has other good players around him, he does not elevate other average players around him like a Patrick Mahomes who basically carried the chiefs to a Super Bowl with a less than average receiving core. I want to see Jared Goff get paid BUT to me he needs the lions as much as the lions need him. He doesn’t have scrambling ability, his arm can be inconsistent at times, those are my two biggest knocks against Jared Goff but i want to see him get paid. I personally hope its like 2 or 3 yr deal because while he has been good for us since he got here he’s not the future if you ask me.

ENOUGH with the insane, totally baseless clamor for the "mobile quarterback." This craze started in the mid-90s, how many mobile QBs have won the Superbowl? 2, maybe 3 if you count Rogers. Stop the insanity folks, of the many facets that make a quarterback great, mobility is about 7th or 8th. Pocket presence and adherence to the mental clock QBs have in their head by which they know they have to get the ball out are more important to avoiding sacks and succeeding than elusiveness. There's more to this than what we see on highlight reels. What we see time and again with scrambling QBs is a tendency to hold the ball too long, then end up losing yardage in a sack. This is why Goff has been sacked 25th most of all QBs over the last 2 years, while your coveted mobile QBs hold four of the top five most-sacked spots. Even mobile guys who have as good or better lines than Detroit, like Jackson, Hurts, and Mahomes, have more. It's a crock. By the way, it's not just sac counts that are affected buy ability to handle pressure, interception #s also. Goff has the 21st-most INTs over that same 2 year period. It should also be said that Goff played two games more than any other QB for that time span, or he would be even much further down these lists. It's just part-timers, injury-plagued, and retirees from '22 that are below him.

That'ss why the Cowboys haven't paid Dak (MVP candidate) and Miami who no one has heard anything about Tua getting an extension. Overpaying and over extending mid tier talents like Goff typically doesn't work out. Ask the Vikings (Cousins), Cowboy (Dak/Romo), 49ers (Jimmy G), and Bengals (Dalton) . How many SBs did these teams win with these type of QBs? I'll wait 😂😂😂. So short of Goff winning a SB. No the Lions shouldn't give him top tier money or extend him for too many years. Just sayin
