My 2 cents… I think Suga’s line is a relationship to hip hop is as natural or fundamental as the relationship between a child and mother. A mother is the most important influence and teacher of their child. A mother lays the foundation for the character and helps them become who they are meant to be.

I personally think that one of the reasons Suga didn't name drop was because he and RM listened to and were inspired by a lot of the same artists, so it would have been unnecessarily repetitive. But also because music and hip hop itself is so deeply ingrained in who he is as a person, that it isn't about the other people, it's about the music.

As I was watching and listening to this, I was reminded of how hard Suga had it at home. His parents did not want him to pursue a career in popular music. They would find his music and actually destroy it! This is what made Suga leave home to pursue his dream. Eventually, they came around, and attended a BTS concert. As BTS was leaving the stage, someone told Suga that his parents were in the balcony. He fell to his knees, bowed and cried. We cried with him. Thanks for your wonderful reactions. It's a treat watching you fall deeper into the "rabbit hole"! Enjoy the journey!

*The Power Of BTS Music* There is a factor of BTS music that still blows my mind, the way is acts as a bridge. I’ll use a comparison example to explain. Jared and Jordan, you talk about discovering hip hop and R&B as kids. On the complete opposite of the musical spectrum I was raised on The Beach Boys, ABBA, and Kenny G because of my parents. My older brothers added to my music influence upbringing with bands like Linkin Park, Green Day, and All American Rejects. From the outside our tastes could not be more polar opposites and yet… AND YET! BTS is a commonality between us. Not only does their music bridge countries, it bridges music preferences. That to me is not only the power of good music, but the power of BTS music.

"...phile" is the add to another word to show an expert or someone dedicated to a particular habit or hobby..e.g. an audiophile is someone who is really into audio of all kinds and all forms. So a hip hop phile is someone who really delves into the world of hip hop....and this BTS version is hip hop phile x 3 (RM..Suga..JHope) plus another 4 ( Jin..V..Jimin..JK)....simply awesome...

j-hope competed in the Boogaloo style and won a national championship. He has a lot of versatility with street styles and he continues to study them. He uploaded videos getting House training with professional house dancers even. He used to run a blog where he educated people about street dance styles. And he joined his crew Neuron at the age of 10. Hip hop started with the djs and the dancers and Hobi was such a hip hop head that rap was a really natural place for him to go. He even beatboxes. Anyway, I'm just saying all this because I think there's a tendency to lose site of his hip hop core because Suga and RM came from underground rap and j-hope came from dance but Hobi has been a lover of hip hop since he was a child and it shows in the authenticity he brings to his music, the education he offers about dance styles and their origins (he made a point to mention the gwara gwara dance in Idol and talk about it's origins in a bunch of interviews, for example) and respect he demonstrates to his influences (Chicken Noodle Soup, What If..., etc).

I don’t know anything. My feelings about this song are these: 1) RM is a student of rap. He studied the greats to formulate his own style. He references songs by double entendres. This is his signature. Intellectual lyricism. 2) Jhope feels the beat in his soul bc he is a dancer first. He references those beats that formulated his style which is melodic rap. 3) Suga doesn’t reference anyone bc instead of looking toward others, he searches within. This formulates his rap style which is emotional rap. Just my interpretation. I have nothing to corroborate my comments.

If I remember correctly Suga's first Hiphop song was also "Fly" from Epik High like RM. The first album he bought - with permission from his parents - was from Eminem - none of them spoke English - but Yoongi loved the sound of it. If I remember my K-Hiphop lesson (not that that is much) K-Hiphop began with 1987's student rebellion that lead to direct election rights. One of the results was that Koreans could now enter the clubs that were only for the American GIs at first. So the first style of Hiphop South Koreans came in contact with is the kind you dance to. But that is not all what Hiphop is as message is so important. Which meant that the time for Korean-Americans came. But understandbly Koreans wanted something that represented them in Korean. After some hit & miss we reach 1992 and Seo Taiji. And well... there is where mainstram begins to be made. Seo Taiji touched on Gangsta Rap with "Come Back Home" (I think) - which is still real Hiphop. Than by 1994 (Idol and) H.O.T. come into existence and Idol music. Among the artists among first gen. is 1TYM and they already do not have pure Hiphop as they can't resist the Idol hooks that Seo Taiji didn't have. This is where K-Hiphop and Idol music splits. (Teddy from that group is now making music for rather other famous artists... and now Black Label if I understood that bit of history correctly .... Hi Jimin!) Funnily enough all three styles come back together under BTS. Thank you! I loved your reaction! You nice! Keep going! 💜

I think when RM said the next masterpiece 2001, he's referring to the fact that he listed Dr Dre's album the Chronic then immediately followed with 2001 which was also Dr. Dre. Maybe I misunderstood but that's how I read it. He said The Chronic and the next masterpiece 2001.

Oh my god!!! I’m so happy you guys have finally listened to Hip Hop Lover!! Thank you for the feature!! I’m so sorry, I got distracted by grad school and didn’t even realize you’d put this video out!! But I’m here now!!! I’m so glad you guys loved it as much as I do! I recently showed Hip Hop Lover to my brother, who is a hip hop fan and was actually a music major in college, and his eyes literally got so wide when he heard how many early hip hop influences RM mentioned! About Suga’s verse, I would consider the possibility that this is a BTS song that’s a love letter to hip hop, not just the rappers talking about their influences. RM and J-Hope already name-dropped a ton of people, many of whom also influenced Suga. I feel like Suga took the idea of this song as being a lover letter to hip hop back to his roots as starting to write verses and music, not just listening to artists. Like, RM talked a little about how he began to start writing but also his influences, J-Hope talked about how he started getting into hip hop because of dance, then Suga didn’t need to name-drop anybody. It would’ve slowed down the song some if he had, or at least, turned it into another direction instead of taking the path of just summing up his whole love and relationship with hip hop and music overall. In my opinion, Suga himself feels possibly the deepest connection to the actual music and sound, not just lyrics or lyrics and music interacting. You can see this in his solo song, First Love from the Wings album. As a musician myself, that song makes me cry! Also I just have to say, I’m in the middle of your Hip Hop Lover’s Fest on Patreon, and I actually fell in love with J. Cole’s Crooked Smile, thank u so much for picking it and introducing me to it!! Cause I had retainers starting from age 8, Invisalign that helped align my teeth including the huge gap between my top front teeth at age 16, and finally got jaw surgery for my major underbite at age 21, so I can relate SO HARD to the kind of constant judgement for an imperfect smile/face J. Cole talks about, and I appreciate how much he also talks abt how pervasive these beauty standards are for women too. Because it sucked so much that I was afraid to smile in photos for years because it’d never come out right, and the kinds of comments I’d get from my grandma and aunt abt my smile and face. Thank you guys so much!!

Thank you for your wonderful reaction! I also think you will fall in love with Yoongi. With his lyricism, delivery, and unending passion, his music hits you right in heart. Especially when you think of everything he has gone through just to survive and make it where he is. I've honestly never been so impacted by a musician. The Last is older but gives a good idea of his background, and First Love highlights his absolute passion for music. But what I really love, is that you can see his progression and feel his healing when you listen to D2. He's in such a good place now, and his musical talent is insane. Not to mention his flow is unmatched!

Here we go again, the vast and endless BTS-s genre and talents on full display. I was smiling big watching your reaction to each love letter to hip hip. I appreciate and love how RM, Jhope and Suga decided to write their own genius lyrics . Just mind blowing especially after first listening when you hear mostly Korean language you FEEL their passion and emotions and then when you actually come to translated lyrics you are digging even deeper. Once again, the more you learn about these remarkable 7 the more respect, admiration, love and support you throw back at them. One of the kind - RM, Suga, Jhope, Jin, V, Jimin and V. Ps. Jordan just start moving to the beats and let it go ..doesn't have to be perfect swag ..you got it. Fighting. Borahae to both and all hip hop lovers also out there . 💜

Ahh I really like this song, bc you feel them at core. Also you get to see from were they are coming, no metter how much they branch out and experiment with style their core is in this song. I think also part that vocal line sings it also refers to them, like it become theirs bc they come to Big hit meet hip hop heads, they make this their life and their rythme be being part of band that is heavy incuenced by hip hop. Also some of youngest members said that when they come to company RM was showing them the most important albums and tracks and teach them hip hop core so they would understand and they make this theirs bc it speek to them... Ahh and Jimin dance hip hop before when he was younger and Jin said his older brother listen to HH so he has some knowlage. Hmm I always thought that there is few reasons Suga didn't name drop, but it can be as simply that he didn't think of it as nessesery and we won't know if he don't tell but knowing him he my not remember why. But I would think that first reason is that he listen to korean rap mostly, but also he said few times that Epik high was one of his influences, that song "Fly" (2006) make him want to rap himself, He also said some another songs... I think he wasn't that big into american hip hop as RM was but if we talk about names that he for sure know all RM listen to (they also been to Eminem concert together), also if you real his interwiew etc you will see that a lot of his influeance and favorite artist aren't hip hop, so maybe this was part of reson he won't drop name of classic composer or pop singer in song about hip hop this was genre he choose to expres himself but dosen't mean it was all he listen to, but here we come to second reason he wanted to make music, He was more of producer and composer, songwriter then rapper in his crew in Deagu, so as someone who make music he didn't look into people but make his own things, so I think this is why he didn't drop names too bc it is about genre and not who what why, also he was called "beat maker gloss from deagu", did you heard this before? So he was know more as person that made music not a rapper, he was trying to make songs and sell them and make it his life, ahh but he also was writing lyrics and rap. He did work as minior for free at record studio, this is part in lyrics he said he trow away secure life for studio. Did you know that Suga was hired as producer in Big hit at first then Bang talked to him to try be part of group, all was bc when was audition, it was in form of rap battle and Suga remixed beat they rapped on there for himself on spot, He get second place in battle, but he made big impresion with his skills so they wanted him as producer, He wasn't even 18 (in korean age he was, He actually talked about it in his song on first mixtape). And 3 thing is simple as he didn't want, simply bc, this was genre he feld like himself, He feld good, He connected and expresed himself the best in this typ of music, He loved it and he didn't need name drops for this, hmm also maybe he didn't want people to look at his music and thing about his influences... But also my last reason will be as simple as: they were told to write song about hip hop, what they feel about it, were if come from, and they simply wrote what they were thinking, and it was simply not planed that RM and Jhope gone for similar way to expres song theme. Hmm but this are my thoughts, we as fans will never knew full picture but it is enough what we know.

I can’t wait for March and the opportunity you’ll have to do a deeper dive into his work as Suga and Agust D. Phile=Lover. You know Namjoon named it. He reads too darn much. jk💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜 Edit: My mom surprised me by listening to 2Live Crew from cover to cover. We were going to Daytona from West Palm Beach. After we got back I asked why she was do fascinated with them she said, she didn't like the lyrics but the fact they fought for the right to say them made her respect them more. Then she handed me the tape, never to listen to it again. Luther Campbell fought the supreme court for the advisory label on the albums so they can say what they want and not offend anyone. It just made the underaged want it more and I think he knew that. All of that is to say that because she taught me that, the freedom of choice when it came to music and because I grew up in Detroit close to Motown. The first time I saw BTS, I knew they were very, very, very talented. I make the joke to my kids that I'm older than the rap game but New Edition, MJ and Prince formulated my High School/ adult years. I listened to so many types of music that I was called weird because, " We don't listen to that (rock, classical, etc.) in the hood." So Kpop was a no-brainer for me. BTS was talented and the underdog. I became ARMY and haven't looked back since. RM and Pharell interview each other and take pictures together, you should check it out. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3mUfptrgLlrgrM💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜 For Jhope dancing he has several videos called Hope On the Street.

When albums were a physical thing and you purchased the CD it would usually come with the Lyrics in the little book insert in the front. This was something many of us old heads looked forward to. So much so that if the CD didnt come with lyrics in the insert book we would immediately sit down and listen to the whole album and write the words to every numbered track on the CD . Just like the format of other albums that had the lyrics in them. Then and only then would we play the album from the beginning as if hearing it for the first time following along with the words like a story book. You naild it on the head, they are books to a lot of people. Some call it rap and hiphop. While it is that , I like to think of it as lifes stories. Books ...

The rap line are hip hop. An talented one too. They studied, learn hip hop history, pay homage (posting pictures, give shout out at concerts etc), get sample cleared and many more. Their appreciation goes deep since debut days. The 3 of them have such a different style and way of delivery. Now, we are seeing many more people who becoming open and interested of them. I am happy that more gain the appreciation of their talent. They are more than pop.

3:07!! Actually j-hope released a song TODAY feat. J Cole! You have to check it out! I love the song so so much. Not only the beat which I think is chill, but it still matches the rap and the beautiful vocals so well 😭. The moment they both harmonise sounds like magic to my ears. My dad died two days ago and bts’ music really helps me. I’m so grateful this song was released today. I listen to it non-stop on repeat..

I believe that Suga didn’t drop any names because it would have been redundant. His influences are the same as RM and J-Hope. I know that Eminem had a huge impact on Suga. He stated once that he used to blast Eminem’s album in his room when he was younger and that his parents didn’t bother him because they didn’t understand English. Once again thanks for the reaction and for diving into who the rapline’s influences are. Borahae

I remember in one of interview, Suga said the first time he decided his dream to become a rap star is after watching Epik High FLY performance when he is 6th grade on elementary school. But before that, he already like hiphop n music, but he set his dream to become a rapper because of Epik High. I think why he didnt include any artist name on his lyrics like RM n Jhope, is avoid a same theme or repetitive lyrics. RM n Jhope already named a hiphop artist who influenced them, so they are focused for the hiphop musician and hiphop dance. Suga as the ending of song focused on talking the hiphop itself as the conclusion of the theme song "hip hop lover" to tell how much he loves that culture as a lover.

As always: Loved this reaction! Big fan of the song and big fan of your and Bangtan‘s love for hiphop! I‘m also learning korean right now and to give you just a little feedback to the word 쉿 : You got all letters correct. But there are some pronunciation rules that make it easier for the speaker to say the letters. 1. When you have ㅅ and ㅣ together it is pronounced as „shi“ (like the english word „she“). technically „shwi“ because of the ㅟ, but the „w“ is almost silent. 2. ㅅ at the end of a syllable is pronounced as a „t“. It‘s called Batchim and you will probably learn it very soon. So 쉿 is correctly pronounced as „sh*t“ 💜 (edit: and translated as „shush“.) Hope that helps. 😅 Lot‘s of love!

i just started learn korean since Jin go to ARMY. So it's fun to find that 쉿 was "shit".. ㅅ will spell as "t" if the letter is located at the end of the word. so it more like "swit" for me, and it's sound like "shit".. can some korean ARMY tell us if that's right?

I honestly don't even like raps, most raps I hear these days are about fame, b*tches and h*es, I also don't like Kpop it seems so fake However when I encountered BTS, they just completely changed my views Though I still don't Kpop except BTS I know nothing about music, the genre or what hip-hop is But thanks to BTS, I now opened my eyes in a new world of music
