Would love to see a video about the basic kind of skills needed - tying knots, launching tenders, dropping anchor etc. Thanks for a great video
@jaredwatney
@jaredwatney 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Daniel. Heaps of anchoring will be done this summer so I will definitely do that. Most knots are learnt during your courses and launching tenders is different on each boat but will certainly film how ours is done. Thank you so much for the ideas.

Nice Jared! I really appreciate so much your videos, and also this in particular, because sometimes i feel desmotivated and stress to find my first job. I don't have experience on board but my attitude is so high! The 90% of the people when i do "dock" it's so great and it's help me to continue. I will try to order like you told. I'm living in Athens now, i don't know if the best place to find, sometimes i feel so lost. I really appreciate and thanks so much for your fantastic channel! Cheers a lot!

questions!! I have so many.... 1. How much does experience matter? 2. Whats the most difficult part about pitching yourself when dock walking? 3. What is something that you didn't expect to find hard or weren't expecting? 4. How long do you generally get jobs for, so you get day work and such. But for longer term jobs do you work for a month or a season? 5. What do you do if your stuck on a yacht with someone you can't stand?
@jaredwatney
@jaredwatney 6 жыл бұрын
How much does experience matter? - Many boats do hire what they call "green crew" in order to train them the way the boats wants the new crew member to work but experience is usually what sets you apart. So if you apply for a job with zero experience, ask yourself, what sets you apart. Whats the most difficult part about pitching yourself when dock walking? - Having confidence to talk to the person without sounding like a robot after doing it all day What is something that you didn't expect to find hard or weren't expecting? - Realising that not every day is going to be beautiful sun shiny days and off days are not guaranteed. (this is not what I found difficult, but most new crew do.) How long do you generally get jobs for, so you get day work and such. But for longer term jobs do you work for a month or a season? - Day work can be from a single day to a few weeks. Then you get season jobs if the boat is smaller and does not do both seasons (Med / Caribbean) the you get permanent which is - permanent - What do you do if your stuck on a yacht with someone you can't stand? - Do the best you can to avoid conflict or fix the problem if possible.

@@jaredwatney hi I just have a few questions about starting as an engineer. I want to move from my nuclear mechanical engineer career. I'm only 19 and my apprenticeship finishes in 10 months but I'm wanting to move to yacht work after it. I have some electrical experience as well as my mechanical. What would the best way for me to move to yachts.

Maybe this was asked already; How much time, if any, do you get "off work", are you able to tourist different cities you dock?
@jaredwatney
@jaredwatney 6 жыл бұрын
During owners trips, almost never unless you need to help the chef shop. Or run to get a newspaper. Or on the best days, join the guests on a trip ashore and help carry snack bags etc. Otherwise if owners are not onboard and you have a free weekend, you can explore as much as you like.

Hey Jared, how different is the real life in the boats you worked compared to the "Below Deck" tv show?
@jaredwatney
@jaredwatney 6 жыл бұрын
Ummmm To be honest I have not watched much below deck. I was asked to interview for it though haha. Tv is Tv. They will ALWAYS need to have drama. That being said. All boats deal with some pretty crazy shit onboard. I think below deck is ok but really what they should have is not a cast that fit certain must have TV faces. They should have a boat with Real Life happenings. Which is what my next youtube series will try to be from my perspective.

Lekker "How To" series! Liked and subscribed :) My question though... as a young female, would you say it's fairly dangerous to dockwalk and look for stew work in the harbours (med/carib/SA- I'm South African)? I'm worried about not being taken seriously as a woman, and about meeting some unsavoury characters (human trafficking is still a thing). I know it's inevitable, but how common is it for women to work on boats? Keep up the videos, and I'll keep on watching! Cheers
@jaredwatney
@jaredwatney 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Charne! Glad you are being careful. one you arrive and start dockwalking, you will quickly realise you are DEFINITELY not the only one walking around. Its usually people goals to get to a dock where no one is as the competition is so strong. Marinas are usually safe as guards are always around.

I have completed General Purpose Rating course plus STCW and there is a long gap after my training because of sickness. Now I do not think any shipping company will give me a job easily. Yes, a few days back I got a call to work on a barge but they directly asked me for the charges to get the job in a national company. After this, I am little motivated to get shipping job and willing to work on any boat/yacht and I think it is hard to get the cargo ship job, so I think I must try to get a job in a yacht. Yes, here I would need to know what knots and other basic tips to work there.

Hey Jared, I'm 17 years old and I am starting to gain interest in working on a yacht. The end goal for me would ideally be a yacht captain. I was born and raised in the Caribbean (St. Maarten). I have been sailing all my life in small dinghies and competed in many regattas off island. I also have been working at a company where i work in rigging and fixing boats. I have worked there for 2 summers now (when I am off from school). I am always exposed to yachts and know some people who work in that industry but i would like to ask you what certificates i should be getting. I would rather be working on a sailing yacht rather than a motor yacht so is there any difference in certifications I need? I am also a certified rescue diver with a first aid certification. Is this applicable to working on a yacht and of any value? One more thing, I would like to go and study at university, are there any specific marine courses that may help me in the long run. Thanks!

Hi Jorge. Don't really feel like I should be the one providing you advice on that. What I can tell you is many boats do background checks on crew members before joining, particularly larger yachts with hi net worth private individuals. Smaller boats maybe not as much but each boat is different and each owner is different so I truly cannot provide you with sufficient accurate information. I would e mail a few crew agents and ask their opinion.

Thanks man. I plan on doing a videos on the social pages and will do ASAP. I recommend stepping down a few positions or starting on a smaller boat because you may have sea time but the majority of the work on yachts is dealing with guests, maintaining the vessel and water sport activities of which you may not have the experience so you need to learn the less fun stuff first before leading a crew on a yacht on how to do it

Hey Jared! I've just subscribed as i was following your account on insta and found it really useful. Im looking to do the move to Ft Lauderdale in October and have been very vigorously looking in to this industry for a few months now. Im in my Visa application process atm B1/2 (I'm from Melbourne Australia) and have been a bit thrown off. With the industry saying they are cracking down on Visas since December 2017. Im about to have my meeting with the American Consulate and i guess my question to you is should you disclose that i am going to look for work there as this is not viable on the B1 / 2 visa. If this doesn't pass my dream has been ruined ! worries or unnecessary stress?
@jaredwatney
@jaredwatney 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Titama - I appreciate you commenting and getting in touch. I’ll be honest and say I don’t really feel comfortable providing visa advice as I am no expert. I can confirm 100% that they are cracking down on visas 100%. I have had my B1B2 denied before because I didn’t have social ties back home. If you say you are looking for work I can almost guarantee you, you will be denied. B1B2 is for holiday purposes. The reason it works for yachting is because once you receive a job on a boat you get stamped out the US and onto the flag the vessel is registered under. You need to have accomodation sorted and reasons for visiting and for how long etc. As an Australian you should be ok but do your homework

this may sound stupid but do they want staff who are attractive and fit? also would you be able to take fishing rods
@jaredwatney
@jaredwatney 6 жыл бұрын
Not really. Fit yes, but the captain usually hires based on the boats requirements. Some boats *unfortunately* are looks driven

Most boats have rods already.

Is there racism in hiring? I am South African Indian and noticed that there isn't a lot of diversity.

Is there an age where it’s a little to late to start. I’ll be turning 27 in December and yachting is something I’ve been wanting to do but been hesitant wondering if it’s meant for late teen early 20’s
@jaredwatney
@jaredwatney 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Mike. Not in your case at all mate. SO many captains prefer older 20s crew as they have more experience and are more responsible in most ways.

Big time. Once you have done your Yachting AEC (advanced engine course) which really is not difficult you can apply to jump up a few qualifications. I dont know the full ins and outs but know its possible.

I'm not trying to fix a fight for you, so no worries! :D I had a look at your hands, and your knuckles look a bit rough. Then I saw your bare feet in the vid where you showed around your cabin, and they look like boxers feet, hence the conclusion.
