49:20 This whole section where Jaron talks about experiencing something as fast as someone creates it has always been what I've thought of when I've experienced highly skilled jazz musicians improvise. It's always seemed to me to be the closest you can come to getting directly inside someone else's mind. They are creating feeling as they are experiencing it, and it's bypassing a lot of conscious 'thinking', and flowing directly into another person, like no other creative thing, IMO.

Great classical music consorts get into each other so closely there is only one being playing. Advanced Aikido practitioners 'know' the 'attacker's' (Uke's) mind at the 'instant' (Read A. Coomaraswami's "Time and Timelessness" ) the attacker has intention, and blend with the 'attack', receiving it as a dance of Love...

I know what you're talking about. The fact, at least in my practice, is that to get there you have to respect your ability to intuitively descern complex patterns without the pretention to be speculative in the moment. The possibility of creative thinking are directly connected to your preparation as long as it is holisticly perceived. It's an event in which analysis could not take place. This is so important because the open space of creativity in this case is filled with a sincere practice of the unknown in which muscle memory, your ear, the emotional travel designed by the experience are in total synchronicity with the music. That is the fascinating part. You do not train to repeat yourself but to have different logics interacting with each others creating hopefully a new piece of language in which you can feel comfortable.

I couldn't stand 10 minutes of this vague rambling. I still don't get why people are so impressed by Cpt. obvious with dreadlocks. He never offers falsifiable and precise explanations - just mere "deepities". I like people like Snowden much more who offer actual insights/facts and clear-cut answers (even if if you don't agree). This TEDtalk pseudo-intellectualism by Lanier just turns me off.

@@TheEricJust Yeah I tried that, but I guess as an analytic philosopher I'm just a bit thin-skinned when it comes to such "philosophical" talks that trigger my bullshit detectors ;) I miss exact thinking and precise, falsifiable claims in every talk by Lanier. It is somewhat okay since he is delivering at least some postive attitudes - but it still basically "trains" people to accept obscurantism as "deep" insights that don't need to provide a factual basis or a concept for solutions. Thus, it can open the door for the Trumps of this world. I'd rather prefer some modern version of people lIke Popper or Russell: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lWTEgZ6wfdWHbq8

Really interesting lecture, I was a bit surprised to hear him say that VR is only focused on gaming, even back in 2019 there was already a lot of excitement building about vr creative apps like tilt brush, quill, medium etc... Totally agree that creative tools and social apps should be at the heart of VR, surprising that Jaron didn't seem fully aware of those already out there considering they totally match his vision. Amazing guy.

12:30-1:20pm, Friday, Aug 9, 2019 (around two weeks after this) Jaron spoke at Outside Lands, titled "Virtual Reality is the Opposite of Artificial Intelligence" - which sounds like the same theme here. This is the event description from their website at the time: "The father of Virtual Reality explains. Artificial Intelligence asks you to pretend that you are not conscious, while VR makes you notice that you are, because consciousness floats persistently in VR, no matter how radical the world and the body transform. AI pretends it isn’t an illusion, while VR announces that it is. VR is the way for computers to be honest."

The kind of VR he is talking about would change communication forever, and would possibly make language obsolete. Instead of conveying to you what’s in my mind through small acoustical noises generated by my mouth and those noises going into your ears with you deciphering all of this (we’re hoping we have the same dictionary), instead of that I could show you my idea, and we could look at it and walk around it and kick the tires of it like it’s a 1969 Camaro, an extreme method of communication. I find this very very interesting, finally one could literally “See what I mean”. All of our language metaphors are visual anyways such as the latter. Or someone might say “She painted a picture with her words”. In my observation, communication is our number one barrier. What he’s talking about around the 45-50 minute mark would make language as crude as trying to walk around the earth instead of flying, potentially even more drastic than that comparison.

Yet- I have no choice. The choice is mother/ conscious/ God, and should be mother's economic responsibility, as well. For one to have choice. should be for all to have choice. Great conversation. @@andybaldman “Fortunately, some are born with spiritual immune systems that sooner or later give rejection to the illusory worldview grafted upon them from birth through social conditioning. They begin sensing that something is amiss, and start looking for answers. Inner knowledge and anomalous outer experiences show them a side of reality others are oblivious to, and so begins their journey of awakening. Each step of the journey is made by following the heart instead of following the crowd and by choosing knowledge over the veils of ignorance.” ― Henri Bergson
