It basically happens anytime in history there's an incredible explosion of technology and wealth. People get so drunk on it that the philosophers become incredible optimists backed by the wealth and power being created (and usually the state which is dependent on that wealth). We start hearing "the best of all possible worlds" levels of optimism. Jaron is on the right side of history in trying to refocus on the simple, knowable truths.

This was a phenomenal conversation... It's good to see Lex have his ideas challenged strongly, respectfully, and constructively. It's clear to see that Lex is getting his debate capabilities stretched and put under pressure by JL... and that's great because Lex is going to be much stronger for it.

I completely agree. Some of the ideas Lex frequently brings up strike me as a bit magical in nature, or not completely thought through. Whether or not he actually believes those things or just brings them up for the sake of engaging conversation, I don't know. Nonetheless it was intriguing to watch JL point out some of the flaws in those assertions.
@brentulstad3275
@brentulstad3275 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed as well. I do at times feel that Lex is a bit out of touch and in such a bubble of interesting, smart, thoughtful, self reflective people and certain idealistic hopefulness and optimistic ambition can be dangerous. As if he has heard about the existence of simple minded & dare I say "prone to stupidity" people, but maybe has never actually met one. So many people are simply dull and unaware, having absolutely no interest or conception of most of these thoughts and ideas. When one has hopes of possibly affecting culture and the future in radical and unalterable ways with powerful technology, ya got to understand the mass of people who are inheriting this future world. Now I think maybe we are past a point of no return on this & so why not be optimistic.... ok I suppose. I'm sure there's a much better, more concise way of stating my thoughts and worries on this, but I'm hopeful that ya kinda get what I am saying here. I mean no unnecessary judgment or negative feedback here as I am absolutely a supportive & interested fan of Lex and his podcast, having so much love and respect for him. I just often sense that a major flaw or blindspot with much of the smart & ambitious intellectuals is not truly being aware of the massive amount of people who will likely never come near these nuanced ideas or intelligent types of thinking. It is difficult not to feel kind of pretentious, condescending or default to patterns of "elitist" thinking on this . . . but man it is just obvious. There are those who humbly thirst and search for knowledge, desiring to better themselves and like minded individuals, and there are those (majority?) who are proud of their ignorance, however unaware.
@cf6713

@@brentulstad3275 Lex operates on a principle that love is a the foundational presupposition of reality. Most if his conversations he begs people to challenge that foundation. So from his point of view even the “close minded” less intelligent people who don’t yearn for the truth in nuanced conversations yada yada what you said. Are standing on a foundation of love, same as you are. I prescribe to a similar understanding that has a big BUT in it. Which has helped me considerably in understanding. I could also be wrong about my assertion towards Lex here but that is my observation from considerable viewing.

@30:00 when Lex posits an AI system that could bring humans closer together...gads, go watch people who actually are together and don't spend their time on social media (could be Amish, Chassidim, or other groups who live apart from technology). The more natural pace of life--without electronic overstimulation-- leaves one with a calm ability to be in communication. I don't think AI will do anything except echo the algorithm.

Listen. I mean truly listen to me. He is one of the founding fathers of this thing that is the algorithms and the total collapse of everyones mental health. Yet hes not a user of the product. That should not make you ponder it should make you act. But you wont. He can contemplate these (realistically simple concepts) because he isnt being poisoned by his own product. Hes just enjoying the selfish greed at the top. He knows what hes doing is wrong. Yet he still does it. Take his analogy about the illegal aliens trimming the trees. He says something that shows his deep incompetence. He says "climate change will eventually burn all of our homes on the hill. A risk that wasnt ever there before." He then says " the energy company will most likely, or hopefully do better" Hes talking about a corporation called PG&E. Following me? Are you familiar? Hes making an excuse and coming to a conclusion (with evidence against that conclusion) for a corporation that has been responsible for burning over 100 people alive and entire towns. See he has no idea what being close to these people that died. Living in a town very close to that company's negligent murder of over 100 people and continuing to rack up bodies every summer with more and more fires caused by that company. If you have heard of gavin newsome. There was a scandal you may have heard of. The "french laundry" incident. The news will tell you that gavin newsome was caught at a very expensive dinner while imposing extreme tyranny on the people of california including mask mandates. And closing down, in most cases forever. Peoples restaurants and entire lively hood. But hes at a restaurant without a mask that he has allowed to be open. While that is true and a problem. It was the distraction. He was there with THE, not A but THE PG&E lobbyist that also contributed millions of dollars to gavins wifes 501c3 non profit. This was right after PG&E burned down the town of paradise and 87 people alive. Right after this dinner. PG&E was put on probation (because a corporation can be classified as a person now). Thats right the corporation was on felony probation. So someone must have gone to prison or been fired? No. Not one person. Only the corporation. Gavin soon after canceled the probation and let the corporation off without so much as a slap on the wrist. Subsequently PG&E contributes 10 million dollars to gavins campaign for the recall. Gavin won. So whats the point of all of this? Jarron lives in california. He chalks these fires up to climate change rather than liberal ignorant evil like him that made ot illegal to clear the forest dead fall or have controlled burns that prevent these massive fires. Hes chalking this all up to climate change and illegal immigrants keeping him safe. In conclusion. If hes ignorant of things that are happening in the state he lives. Things you dont have to dig to find. Hes also ignorant in his product. He seems smart. Those are always the most dangerously incompetent or malevolent people in our society. Hes a snake in the grass that is trying to get you to just eat the apple.

Lanier is a master - you see this in every response; he's so first principles he first demands of a question that its assumptions pass the sniff test. He does it better than most subjects Lex has interviewed- a key characteristic of a first rate mind is the demand that an inquiry justifies its validity! Love this loads!

Thank you for this discussion. I'm in Jaron Lanier's camp, not that he has one, but his take on these matters resonates with me. And not just on the issues discussed here. A lot can be leaned by his(highly) informed, open and respectful approach. Both of you inhabit this well. Brilliant, ingesting, fascinating, cool...oh! And he played with Bob Dylan . Jaron’s argument against placing AI inside the circle is not radical, and shares a lot in common with A.L. Kroeber’s paper on the Superorganic. AI i serves too well as a means of fetishizing / controlling existence, which is an escape, and definitely not a step toward understanding ourselves. The creative community and data unions seem to better promote self knowledge and autonomy.

Loved this talk Lex! I thought it would have went more out of hand due to your intro but gladly this suspicion was not confirmed. I bet it is challenging to bring Jaron to a prepared script as I am convinced he can just show in the podcast and talk for 2h straight. Said this, I really want to congratulate you for leading the conversation and to be able to politely disagree in topics that you both carry such deep beliefs at the moment. I really enjoyed that you've explored Music even lightly and I would be delighted that you dive into that topic deeper in a future episode. Your work in Lex Fridman's podcast is astonishing!
