I think you need to show Chandrakant Pandit a little more love. Similar to what you mentioned about Greg Sheppard, Pandit won the Ranji trophy with Mumbai (strong team) then he worked with Vidharba and won them 2 consecutive and only Ranji Titles and then worked with MP and won them their maiden title as well. He is a strict disciplinarian so at a IPL he need a Gambhir as buffer to manage the stars but he's definitely a Rajni coaching legend

So many aspects to consider with a coach - technical coaching, inspiration of players, bringing a group together, management of the team of specialist and support coaches, management of selectors/boards, press, tactical influence... It's very likely there can never be one "best" coach because different coaches will be better at different things. That said, to throw another name in the mix, Ryan Campbell has been outstanding with Durham in the last few years.

Even though there are so many dependent variables at play here, I think most people would agree that a "good team" is the main one we should try to control for. So, how can we check coach records after controlling for the variable of "teams"? I think the cumulative record of the coach with different teams should take us in the right direction. If the coach did good with team A, but bad with team B, he probably isn't a good coach If the coach did good with all the teams he coached, he's good. Compare the overall record of coaches who have coached multiple teams. And you'll get your answer. Ofc, coaches who have coached only one side/team won't qualify. But we'll still get good enough ranking.

Great video, question is a coach should also be rated keeping in mind his support staff? E.g a team with a bad injury record , if they lose. The coach can't be blamed in such a situation.

I don't think the role of coaches in cricket is as pronounced as in football where the managers control almost everything about the team. Especially with separate batting coaches, bowling coaches, fielding coaches, and analysts, I wouldn't expect the coaches to radically impact a team's winning chances (except Baz I suppose)

It's almost as if you've read my mind. I was just thinking about the contrast between football and cricket in this aspect. Football places far more responsibility on coaches (who are directly involved in team selection and tactics) and face the media a lot more than in cricket. Which means when a team does poorly in cricket, it comes down to the players and the captain almost invariably (unless we're talking about exceptions like WI, Pak, etc.). It's very rarely the coach! But when a team wins, the bouquets are also comfortably rested on the legacy of the players and the captain. Before thinking about who is a good coach, it's good to look at how (if at all) coaches are important to a team. The only time a coach has stood out (positively or otherwise) is when there is a very clear shift in something that directly impacts performances (identity, team chemistry, etc.)

We really ascribe a team's record to the captain in cricket due to the nature of the game. Traditionally a coach improves a player but the captain uses the players in the team to try and win.

I'm not disagreeing or anything but a counter argument would be he lost series in sa and eng that should've been won, 3 yrs and we don't have a decent or even potential replacement for shami or bumrah or ashwin, and that selfless culture can and should also be attributed to next gen players, it was the prev gen which were playing slowly, you kicked most of them out(basically kl) and rohit/virat agreed to play aggressively. Rest were always playing aggressively.

@@utkarshkarmwar5773 I think you give Dravid (&Rohit) a lot of credit for getting to the final of the 2023 wc at home, that was his biggest failure. And Rohit's for that matter. Rohit and Dravid got handed the best side, most mature side India has seen in the past 10 odd years after Sachin and co. (2011 team) retired. We had all bases covered, unlike in the 2015 and 2019 wc where our bowling attack was still not that experienced and our middle order batters and spinners were probably not the best in those conditions (Aus & Eng). The only thing that you could argue went against us was our selection of a backup allrounder to replace Hardik (who had an injury on the field, can't blame him for trying to save a boundary of his own bowling and spraining his ankle), maybe someone like Venkatesh Iyer could have been a better option instead of Surya. Shardul Thakur was definitely a selection error, I still don't understand why he played(Rohit's call) the initial games up until Hardik's injury. Dravid took a back seat in most of these decisions, he might have given his input at times and talked to players about their roles and what he wanted them to do, but I don't think you can call these teams his. They only became his teams in defeat, Rohit never showed up for a presser after losing a major tournament. Now, coming back to the mistakes Rohit and Dravid made in the final itself (keeping aside all the ways in which the squad selection could have been better or different): 1. The pitch, according to sources close to the team and former players like Mohd. Kaif, it is safe to say that the pitch was made a particular way, in essence the pitch was doctored to favour our spinners and not give anything to their pace battery. By doing that we took out our swing bowler Siraj from the game, regardless of if we batted first or second. 2. After losing the toss, Rohit was visibly down in his body language and he was feeling the pressure because Pat had read the pitch perfectly and chosen to bowl first. That sends out massive red flags (for the lack of a better term) to the youngsters in the team like Gill, Iyer, Kuldeep, Siraj who haven't been at that stage ever in their career. But Rohit went out and tried to take the attack to the aussies, kudos to him. Gill threw his wicket away because of the directive from the captain and the coach to maximise the powerplay because they knew the pitch would slow down as the ball got older. 3. Rohit throwing his wicket away in the final over of the powerplay having scored 10 runs off a part timer already. That is the worst thing that could have happened at that stage for us and Australia won the match psychologically there. Iyer got out immediately after that, he was afraid of getting hit in the head and played away from his body to a fairly average ball by Pat Cummins, you can't blame him. But the fact that Rohit exposed the middle order is not spoken of that much. Ricky Ponting and Matty Hayden said it on air, that Rohit should have played one of his big knocks on this occassion to see his team through after a fantastic campaign. They sensed it from the comm box that the tides shifted there when our fearless, selfless captain threw his wicket away when he could have partnered with Kohli and milked the aussies for the next 20-25 overs and then accelerated after the 30th or the 35th over. Trigger happy Hitman lost his marbles and the WC at home. But no one has the balls to say that in our country. We would rather d*ckride him for his self-proclaimed selfless approach. See the irony? 4. Okay, we crawled our way to a decent total. 240. How do we defend this? Do we throw our best bowlers up top and not leave anything in the tank, in case we make late inroads? "YES!!!!", said Rohit Sharma and I'm presuming Dravid agreed. Again, we took out our swing bowler who has a good record against left handed batters in the first 5 overs, Mohd.Sirajofficial (baiki jo bhi hai fake id hai lol). 5 overs each of Bumrah and Shami, they manage to take 3 wickets and concede 47 runs, what next? The track was better to bat on against spin. Okay, we have Ashwin, he's got Labuschagne's number and he can probably outsmart Head too on a flat track. Oh wait, we didn't select him because we wanted our 3 pronged pace attack which we could use in the powerplay. But wait, Siraj hasn't bowled an over in the powerplay which he had done up until then throughout the wc. So, now we have tired our best bowlers by giving them long spells, they can't bowl through the middle because then if the game goes deep we won't be able to bowl them and our 3rd pacer is useless because he can't do much with an older white ball on a docile track. I would have either bowled Shami-Siraj-Bumrah in tandem, 3 overs each and 1 for Jadeja or I would have doubled down and gone for 3 spinners and selected Aswhin instead of Siraj because I wasn't going to use him any way. But we don't make changes in the final. Guess what, Australia does, they didn't go with Stoinis, instead they went with Labuschagne, who proved to be the thorn in Rohit Sharma's flat foot. Did Labuschagne go hammer and tongs?? Did he play with "intent"?? No. He saved his wicket and held an end because this was an ODI World Cup final and not a T20 World Cup final. Okay, so Travis Head must have tried to keep his strike rate above 140 right from the start. NO!!! He started slow, got lucky a few times, received a few lucky bad deliveries which he put away, saved his wicket and then unleashed against the spinners because the evening had cooled and the pitch was easier to bat on. There was no set manner in which Australia played the final, they never panicked, they never thought they could win the game in the powerplay, they stayed in the game and kept trusting their cricket. We forgot that. We relied too much on the pitch, our 2 pacers, Kohli to score a century. Rohit and Dravid lost a home world cup. The hosts of the previous 3 world cups won it. 2011, 2015 and 2019. We lost to a side which played golf on their off days and got drunk when they won a game. Why? Because our captain couldn't think on his feet.

I can give you a Top 3 easily that most people with agree with. My Top 3; 1. Fleming (cos of longevity + winner) 2. Baz (current best in internationals and has a strong philosophy) 3. Shastri (2 away BGT wins) Trott and Hathrasinghe are really good coaches who could suceed with bigger teams and Hathrasinghe can coach Australia one day if the CA is not biased
