@@tanupreetwell he does have his fair share of limitations though, especially the pace at which he bowls, too slow to be effective outside england where the ball doesn't swing nearly as much ( barring nz). The ashes is a gonna be a huge challenge for him ( assuming it goes ahead per schedule). I do have a feeling that green will outperform him ,( atleast with the ball), considering he is taller, stronger and quicker through the air.

Know you’ve touched on Imran’s batting being more on paper but to illustrate why Sobers is the goat - Between 1961 and 1968, over a period of 8 years, Sobers had 125 wickets at 27.9 bordering on 4 wpm (one of the top pacers in the world in a flat era) and was also easily the best batsman in the world averaging 63. He was a full time hazelwood level bowler and a Steve smith level batsman. Imran’s peak stats look prettier but Sobers had more utility in both disciplines at his peak. During that period he had 300+ runs and 20+ wickets in a series thrice in his career which nobody else has done and also a series with 700 runs and 20 wickets That is outside averaging 58 with the bat over 20+ years and being a handy part timer who could bowl both spin and pace outside his peak and being one of the best fielders in the world for the entire 2 decades. His bowling average suffers from the fact that he had an insanely long and productive career as a batsman while a standard world class career as a fast bowler of 8 years.

He faced starc in Australia a few years ago, but got out quickly to the right arm bowlers quickly so starc didn’t have a chance, shaheen at home(in the series where nz dominated with the bat), and against Sam Curran at home on flat pitches. Williamson vs shaheen in Pakistan would be an interesting battle to see, as well as Williamson vs boult in a first class match.

Imran Khan is Great. He is for me top 3 greatest cricketers of all time when we look at the overall impact on cricket. He is one of the greatest players alone just on pure cricketing skills and statistics. Add to that his captaincy and leadership on and off the field and the amount of players he hand-picked and nurtured and made them world-beaters. And just the influence on people and the game itself. He was the first captain to advocate for and introduce neutral umpires. He made cricket the most dominant sports in South Asia decisively (before that it was 50-50 tied with hockey) with his popularity reaching everywhere even in India,Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

From my observations and I'm no expert of course; however, Sam can bat, field and he bowls well (he can swing, and he is a thinker, he's left handed). What I love about Sam is that he works hard, he has heart, he is willing to work hard at his craft and he will get better providing he is willing to understand his weaknesses and works hard at getting better. Bottom line Sam made the England test team, that in itself speaks volumes, Sam I wish you the best of luck, I pray he continues to work hard and get better.

Last test of the 2019 Ashes England played Curran, Stokes and Woakes as all-rounders and won the game, Curran with three first innings wickets and scores of 17 & 15 at 7. Your point about needing Stokes and Ali in the team for him to be effective makes sense. Southampton 2018 is another good example of this: Stokes and Moeen in the team, scores of 78 & 46 for Curran at 8 and the wickets of Kohli and Ashwin.

I think your point about how Bradman and Khan were 'worth 2 players' or how fans tend to get all rounders wrong with assuming anyone less than Botham is useless for a test side touches on a really interesting point; in cricket unlike sports such as baseball and basketball we really don't understand 'value'. It's often clear that a Curran esque 'bits and pieces' all rounder adds value beyond their seemingly sub standard averages*, but there's no statistical evidence backing up that assumption (alteast not publically). It would really fascinate me if one day someone could come up with a formula for 'on/off' or 'wins->replacement' in order to be portray cricket but until then we'll have to keep having these quite long winded debates with eachother about why picking a slightly below average 7 and a slightly below average 5th bowler can make your test significantly better. *arguably the first modern professional all rounder Wilf Rhodes ended up as a 'bits and pieces all rounder' after the war but repeatedly showed his ability to 'make things happen' plugging gaps where england where lacked wickets or runs just like curran often does

@@christianfrost8660 how many batsmen in the world struggle against a bowler just because he's left arm and creates a change in angle? Not too many. Not the best batsmen. No one is asking them to be Shoiab Akhtar or Glenn McGrath. They just have to be good enough to play for reasons other than a different bowling arm. Curran bowls more half volleys than good deliveries these days. Starc is way too inaccurate for such a talented bowler. It's because Australia don't have as many options as England or India that Starc is playing regularly. Boult and Wagner are very good though. What's the first thing you think of about them? Not that they have a different angle of bowling. You think of Boult's swing and Wagner's bouncers. Shaheen Afridi is shaping up to be very good too, though he's yet to prove himself in very tough situations. I have nothing against left arm bowlers and no one will ever be a Wasim Akram. His accuracy and movement has went a bit, the problem isnt his pace. Hasnt ever dropped off in limited overs either. I still see him averaging 28-29 with the bat and 32-34 with the ball

If curran gets to even Jadeja like record in tests with 35+ average batting and below 28 bowling average England should be happy

Wouldn't he cease to be bits and pieces player and be considered a genuine allrounder? Isn't the general standard for being a genuine all-rounder a player whose bowling average is below their batting ave? I think there have only been about 20 or so over the last 50-70 years of international cricket who have ended their careers with stats like this.

@@dcbbot bowling avg below batting is a loose criterion. A batsman can average 52 and 50 or a bowler 25 and 23 with bat and ball respectively.

@@anweshchatterjee7595 I think you're missing some key information here, so it's difficult to understand what you mean and therefore reply adequately. So I'll just add by saying, sure, it's a loose criterion, however, that still doesn't change the fact that if Curran gets anywhere near a 35+ batting average while maintaining a bowling ave of 28 he would be considered to be in the top 10-12 allrounders since the second world war. He'd move from the Derek Pringle to the Ian Botham part of the axis. The initial writer's use of the term "even'' suggests it's not that big an ask. I suggest that it's extremely unlikely he'll be anywhere near that based on his performances so far and the history of test cricket and that it is extremely rare to be able to have those numbers. Kapil Dev, for instance, averaged 31 with the bat and 29 with the ball. It'd be like saying If Dom Sibley can ''even'' ave 50 with the bat England would be happy. No s%it! Every team would be happy with it, he's just unlikely to do so, so unlikely that it's not really worth pointing it out, let alone talking about it as if it's easy.
