This was well and truly the ashes wasn't it. Australia took a dead England Team, cremated them, gathered the ashes into an urn and lifted it.

Some crazy stats for us all: Catches dropped by England: 22 No ball Wickets by England: 5 Batting averages: Warner 29 Harris 34 Labuschagne 41 Smith 30 Head 59 Green 32 Carey 20 Compare those to 2019: Warner 9 Harris 9 Labuschagne 50 Smith 110(!!!!) Head 27 Marsh 20 Paine 20 If, in this series England had taken just one of the 3 easy catches off Labuschagne his average would've been 28. If they caught all 3 his average would've been 21.44 ! Yet who were the batsmen England feared the mist coning into this: Smith Labuschagne Warner Let's not even talk about what the figures would be been if Stokes hadn't bowled a No ball when he bowled out Warner on 1 when he went on to get 95. Or the drop on Head when he went on to get 152. Or the drop of Smith when he went in to get 93. Or the drop of Khawaja on 3 when hw went on to get two Centuries. The bowling in this series was immense. But the biggest lesson I've learnt from this series is that my grade school cricket coach who was also my German teacher.. was right. Catches Win Matches

Yes catches were dropped, but that's common, no team displays 100% catching efficiency. They might have one a test had they taken a few more catches.

Anderson would have had Boland-esque figures against the muppets England had batting.
@rp1455
@rp1455 2 жыл бұрын
yeah, I thought Boland was good. Decent enough pace, very good line and length which is reflected in how economical his bowling was. But he's not express pace, and he doesn't swing or seam the ball all that much. Most of this was England's awful batting.
@lingolarker9318
@lingolarker9318 2 жыл бұрын
That’s absolutely spot on. There’s no way on earth Boland is a better bowler than Anderson (or Broad). He’s massively flattered by that average.

You know much as Australia have consistently had the wood over England. When you consider there's only 12 weeks of (barely) cricketable weather in England and 39% of clubs have shut since 2004, when you think only 1% of Schools in England play cricket... I'm stunned that they're even in the top 8 of Cricket sides. It's sad because at the end of the day all cricket lovers are friends. Australia is basically England's little brother (who's better at Sport) hence why names like Smith, Starc, Cummins, Warner, Head sound awfully English.. I for one am sad and disappointed when there is no competition. And as much as I love India and Indians it just wouldn't be the same to have an Australia India Ashes or Australia South Africa Ashes. I for one hope England do sort themselves out. Get cricket back in schools. Play on flatter wickets, Root, Bairstow and Labuschagne only average late 30s in England County Cricket. Head averages like.. 15? You're not going to breed big scorers and long form top order batsmen on raging Green seamers. And as I've just said they already have enough obstacles as it is. BIG CHANGES NEEDED. 🇦🇺🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 🇮🇳 🇳🇿🇱🇰 🇿🇦 🇵🇰

Two months on from the Ashes disaster and I had to smile at Jarrod's last words on this piece: 'At least it can't get any worse.' Famous last words indeed. Written just a day or so after England's even greater debacle in the West Indies. Aaaaagh. Mind you I loved the comments, Jarrod. Thanks. You spoke common sense that every person who ever played cricket intuitively understands yet it does not permeate through to the ECB.

Love your work Jarrod. Maybe England should have brought a larger touring party? Deciding factors for me ... Aussie pace attack; English batting averages coming into the tour excluding Root (nothing over 40); on-going opener issues for England post-Cook; Botham early-90s deja-vu expecting Stokes to fire; no decent English spinner; too many English players who had never experienced Aussie conditions. Australia's batting wasn't that good, but England's were so much worse.

I reckon the only way England can be competitive against good sides is if they try to go full on horses for courses with their batting and a bit with their bowling aswell, like seriously what is the point of playing Hameed in Australia? I really rate Hameed but he's just not suited to Australian conditions and because of this series he is now going to not be selected for whatever the next series is I'd wager. England have 1 world class batsman (Root) and 1 great batsman (Stokes) and a whole whole bunch of average batsmen, some of them even know they are good in say Indian conditions despite not being good outside India and England (if even that). For next Ashes: Get a bunch of English batsmen (50ish I'd say) and put them on a simulation of an Australian pitch (If Australia can get Simulated Indian pitches England can get Simulated Australian pitches). Then get a bunch of Australian net bowlers, fly them over (the Australian net bowlers), pay them good money to do so and mess around for a month. I'd mainly Play some simulated games but however you want to do it, decide who bats where based on that month of training and don't change your team no matter how badly your players perform

You does wonder if the downsides of being a captain (i.e. worrying about things other than your own batting) are amplified in The Ashes, given the infamy of England's recent record down under and the extra press scrutiny

I'm not even sure you can call this year sub-par for him considering the support he received. Root succeeded when he had a partner in Malan, but apart from that Joe was stuck watching a highlight show of Scott Boland and Pat Cummins dismissals from the other end

I know your love for data, and i dont think there is much solid objective data to be found on this subject buf i would live to hear your take on the role of keepers in cricket. Especially in a test match cricket. Why it should still be a specialist position. Or should it be? Keeping this Ashes in perspective and looking at what other countries expect of their keepers and what they actually have. Also, a word on Billings, and the importance of his chatter that Buttler lacked. How on a good day, T20 opener keepers(which there are a few of for some reason) will be playing the game literally every ball. While everyone is always subject to be moved around by the capatin, behind the stumps is the place where you find the only constant. The men who are always just slightly off center of the action.

England can focus on only 1 format at a time and go all in, when it was tests, their T20 and ODI teams were average at best, participation in T20 leagues was scoffed at, after 2015 when they started to focus purely on white ball cricket, they are pretty much unstoppable in that format buuuuuuut at the cost of their red ball cricket

The “we’ll have a bat” is the worst decision I’ve seen since looking at the pitch and deciding neither broad nor Anderson would be able to work with that grass in that first test. It showed, to me, a complete lack of understanding of his players or cricket to be honest. It’s one thing to bat exceptionally but he gave his team zero chance to win that first match (the only chance was to bowl Australia out cheaply first up).

Poor English team, can't even complain about the spinning tracks anymore. Feel sad for them, at least they should have found any excuse this Ashes after losing to NZ and trailing to India at home. But hey, it was the spin track because of which they lost in India, Bad pitch against NZ and Poor ground security which cost them 2 matches against India, other wise this England team could win anywhere. Just take out the pitch, opposition batsman, opposition bowlers and opposition fielders from the equation and you'll see ho strong they are in Test matches.
