I love musicals and pizza and shoes! Well not so much shoes. The community basically asked all the questions I had in my head and more! Genuinely great questions and great in-depth answers. You might think this style video is boring to watch, but I sat through it all as if it was an interview and wanted to learn more. It taught me more about your videos/behind the scenes/why you choose to do or not do something. I love it! Been avidly watching your videos for a few years now and the quality only gets better. Keep it up and I hope to see more of these videos! I also really appreciate you linking or talking about other content creators. That is wholesome and just shows channel positivity!

@@JarrodsTech Excuse me if you have done this. Would you consider bringing back a 2 year old high end laptop to test how they perform considering drivers and whatever updates you've done to our procedures? It could help provide something towards a long term assessment Edit: musical pizza shoes. You almost answered my question with that person asking for 2020-2022 comparisons. Still I think doing a single laptop review of one you own that you reviewed 2 years ago would be a good contrast to the original review you've done

Meteor lake on laptops is a complete node and architectural change(apparently from 10nm to 7nm, while using a tiled setup vs the monolithic setup they've been using prior) while the deskptop 14th gen is a raptor lake refresh so i'd expect much bigger gains on the laptop side for 14th gen along with greater efficiency.

@VideogamesAsArt
@VideogamesAsArt Жыл бұрын
Based on Intel's announcement, it is an architectural change in the sense they are going monolithic to tiled (chiplets) but the CPU cores themselves are the same ones, the only change is that they have been ported from Intel 7 to Intel 4 but very few other changes. That means, they will be much more efficient but will likely not be more powerful. And because laptops are so power-constrained, this likely means we will get more performance in thin laptops (very thick laptops will likely be the same, they will just use less power, be cooler and quieter lol, although this gen it will still be raptor lake for those)

I changed the thermal paste on 2 of my laptips after 3 years of use. It doubled the framerate on all my games. If you see your laptop having worse performances than when it was brand new, even after removing all bloat and updating drivers, a clean up + thermal paste might very well be good for you

Definitely worth installing a monitoring software to check temps and frequency while gaming. Get a feel for what temps your laptop usually runs at and what frequencies it's capable of boosting to, that way you can troubleshoot it in the future. Personally, as a super nerd, I have a game I know pushes my laptop pretty hard, so I created a control to test against. I have a room temp, and game/laptop settings to test at, and the numbers I currently get. If that ever changes significantly I'll know to repaste. Next time is gonna be the Honeywell TPM material cause that shit lasts basically forever.

31:55 You say that like Radeon has ever been seriously competitive with Nvidia in laptop, the 6800m was about on par with the 3070 for performance (Because it's actually a 6700) but priced like it could compete with the 3080. And the same thing is true the whole way down the stack. Looking at the 7600s here in Norway, I could buy the Asus A15 with it and a 7735HS for 1500 USD (with tax), or I could buy a MSI Bravo 15 with the 4060 and a 7535 HS for 1290USD. The 7600s isn't even faster IIRC, and you lose out on DLSS. I don't get why AMD on the desktop understands that they need to undercut Nvidia to make up for their weaker brand and feature set, but then on laptop they act like they can charge a whole tier higher for the same performance. Hell, if I wanted the 7600s with the 1tb drive instead of the 512gb drive, it now costs the same as a Lenovo Legion Slim 5 with a 7840HS, RTX 4070, and 1TB of storage and 16 gigs of ram. I don't understand why anyone can be excited about Radeon laptop GPUs when this is the pricing situation.

I can answer the thermal paste questions! C: 1. LM laptops shouldn't need replacing within the lifetime of the device if it's applied correctly. 2. Most normal thermal paste should be reapplied every year. 3. I'd personally recommend the Thermal Grizzly Carbonaut Pad. It's not as good as LM, but it never needs to be changed once it is applied. Bob of all Trades did a fantastic video about this exact thing. I can attest to the efficacy of the pad as well. Performance is excellent. I use the Eluktronics Max 17 for reference.

@@noahbollinger2828 If you buy a gaming laptop, it's a lot like buying a hotrod. Sustained high heat tends to dry out pastes faster, in my experience. I notice a substantial shift in thermals after about a year of daily use. It will definitely vary from laptop to laptop. I don't expect a 1650 laptop with some i5 to need a paste replacement nearly as often as my i7 and 2070. Hope that makes sense. :)

@@imglidinhere are you using kryonaut or something? I've never seen a laptops thermals significantly worsen after a year, definitely not to a degree that is worth opening up the laptop and potentially breaking it or making it worse on an annual basis. People overthink temperatures waaaay too much in gaming laptops. They're rated and tested to run hot for years, and I've never had a problem. Cosmetic damage or other things are more likely to happen to a laptop than the components overheating and dying. Just enjoy your laptop. It's why Jarrod doesn't care either.

From someone who used to work in IT (2000-2012) and who used to have different certifications, i have found your channel to be the "go to place" for laptop reviews. There are many "bigger" channels, but they most of the time put on a show about stuff, and use cringe segways, just to for the sake of putting on a show instead of doing an proper informed review. Your more laid back aproach and focus on acctual reviews, feels more professional. I have been using mostly desktop computers my whole life, becouse i never really wanted to pay more money for less raw power, less noise and quality. About 4 years ago it was time to replace my home desktop, so i thought that i would give the new gen laptops another look. Ended up buying one based on recommendations, but i only had it for 2 days before returing it, to much heat and to much noise, ended up with a computer that hit thermal limits even in idle mode. By a random chance i found your channel and a review of the Lenovo Legion 5, i took your review and mixed it up with a lot of other reviews, and that ended up with me owning one and i have never looked back. just bought my second current gen Lenovo Legion 5 based on your reviews (legion slim 5). So with so many letters what i really wanted to say is, never change, keep doing what you do, the way you do it, its great! Dont transform your channel into an entertainment channel. =)

Couple of points to add. At 35:00 the rtx 2060 was much faster than the 1060. Your own graphs showed the 1660ti being 42% faster than the 1060. The rtx 2060 would've been 10% faster at least over the 1660ti, making it 50% faster than the 1060, while bringing in new rtx and DLSS features. Sure, they weren't great, but you still got a large boost to performance. So the rtx 4000 is not like the rtx 2000 series. At 11:47 I believe a more accurate showing would be just going off the rtx 4070 vs 4060 comparison since the 3070ti is basically on par with the 4070 at 1440p. So at 1440p it'd be closer to 18% faster than the 4060, which is a decent improvement. With FSR 3 looking as good as FG, you won't be missing out on much feature wise now. That comment you responded to, forgot to mention the rtx 3070ti 150w nitro 5 is usually cheaper than even the 140w rtx 4050 laptops. Only 105w rtx 4050 laptop cheaper is the MSI bravo 17 but it has a worse display, slightly worse CPU, worse cooling and worse build. And finally, what is your view on the lowering of max TDP's of laptop parts from OEM's and nvidia? We used to have 3.5kg to 4kg laptops cooling 200w GPU's. Now they barely cool a 175w (not really 175w due to dynamic boost) GPU in the same 3.5kg to 4kg laptops. Are OEM's regressing backwards in cooling or is nvidia admitting they're incapable of improving laptop TDP limits? Cause its 1 or the other and neither is good.
@JarrodsTech
@JarrodsTech Жыл бұрын
The 30% on screen was for 3060 vs 2060 based on my video, I was trying to make the point that it was a bigger gap than 3060 vs 4060 Maybe more power doesn't provide more performance so they don't bother, we don't really have a way of knowing as I don't know of anyone that's gotten 4090 mobile running above 175w, but we can see the curve starts to flatten at higher levels jarrods.tech/gpu-power-scaling/ so probably diminishing returns. It looks like there would still be some gains after that, so I don't know other than they don't feel like it lol
@siyzerix
@siyzerix Жыл бұрын
@@JarrodsTechI was showing that the 3060 to 4060 is a small jump and that is the complete opposite of the 1060 to 2060 jump. Both provided new features. So the 4060 is not similar to the 2060 in that regard. Well, with 200 to 230w surely nvidia can cram in a desktop 4090. I mean undervolted it already eats 250 to 300w and keeps most of its performamce. And its not impossible. We had the asus studioproart with the 24gb rtx 6000 quadro gpu.

It wasn't factory, but when I purchased my Asus TUF A15 in 2020, I opted for Thermal Grizzly liquid metal on the CPU and same brand but paste (they didn't do liquid) on the GPU. I think Asus did not coat the copper, so a repaste is out of the question. I haven't paid enough attention, it's possible it runs slightly warmer today than when I bought it, but that's nothing noticeably hotter, even when my hand it's in the line of the exhaust. It's lasted 3 years already. I'm hoping it'll last 1-2 more at least. I think going forward, I'd prefer paste or pads. It's more repairable, maintainable.

I have a question around gaming laptops, docks, and high resolution/refresh rate monitors. I get the premise, 1 usb-c cable between dock and laptop. Everything else plugs into dock (keyboard, mouse, monitors, etc.). What happens with gaming though? Gaming laptops may likely have 1 usb-c and/or 1 hdmi port that connects to dgpu. Is the bandwidth shared for video and peripherals? What is the "correct" way to dock? Video wires directly to laptop and usb-c dock for everything else? I'm assuming it varies by laptop/dock, but what is the "proper" setup. If we need a concrete example, zephyrus g14 2023 and considering caldigit ts4 but flexible on dock.

Have you ever thought about reviewing Origin PCs new 4080/4090 gaming laptop? They offer lifetime labor and are a smaller company that assembles in the US. Pricing seems very reasonable vs some of the other luxury brands.

Musical Pizza Shoes 🍕 I've been a fan since a looong time Jarrod, pretty much since 2019 I was looking to buy my first gaming laptop and went with the acer Predstor Helios 300, lately thanks to your gaming deals webpage I found my next upgrade which is the Asus Zephyrus M16 with 4070 for a pretty good price! I love watching all your reviews, I think you're one of the fews that really care about the details that people want to see

The clevo P650SE was the PC i had till recently, originally not mine tho but yeah until getting my all new legion 5 the clevo served pretty well. It had battery issues and build quality was meh, also too bulky. But comparing the two aside from specs and price to performance ration there is alot of improvement in newer hardware, still a nice laptop if gotten for cheap, good for gaming, the legion now costs less for the specs it has than the clevo, ohh well i will see how the legion works out long term, i managed too to tone down the fans on linux thanks to the lenovoLegionLinux project, avoiding the 24/7 at 1700 rpm, and am about still to get the newer ram.

The Magic Pizza Shoe processor coming out looks interesting. Where do you think the Nvidia 5000 GPUs will be in terms of low end 4K gaming? Will the 5050/5060 be able to play in 4K?

🎵🍕👞 Assuming you're talking laptop, given 4070 can't do it, maybe 5070 next gen can? But also I suppose games then will demand more too.

_Follow up question:_ Do you actually play Cyberpunk or do you just use it for benchmarking ray tracing? I can't call that a game but reviewers can inadvertently use it for benchmarking purposes.

Musical pizza shoes lol. I appreciate that this channel is focused on gaming laptops. gaming laptops these days are in a unique position they are like hybrids that combines desktops power (for the most part) with portability so if you don't own a gaming desktop but you want to game on the go then laptops are for you. While portable devices like steam deck or the rog ally are for someone on a budget or someone who already owns a desktop and wants a portable secondary device.

musical pizza shoes :D I was just interested in the mini-LED question, as i myself am looking into this for my next laptop. Interesting though, about the cursor and the dimming zones. Do you have any other experiences and/or tips on mini-led displays (on laptops)?
@JarrodsTech
@JarrodsTech Жыл бұрын
🎵🍕👞 ASUS tend to give you the option to make all zones act as 1, as if it's a normal screen, you don't get quite as much contrast but it can be used to prevent that effect.

Musical Pizza Shoes.... Thank you Jarrod, I really appreciate all the world you do for us. I just build a new 7900xtx computer, but in all honesty, I barely even use it the way it needs to be used, I would rather have a laptop, and I watch all your videos, because I think, even though I want the most powerful, I will never be able to use a computer the way it should be used. I would rather have the ease of use.
