For those saying "just use your phone". This device isn't for your. Its for people that want a dedicated device. I don't want to be fooling around switching back and forth between apps on my phone and a translation app. I'm purposefully looking for a dedicated device that will only be used for translating that will be running basically 24/7 in my ear. Personally, Id rather build a larger wearable out of a raspberry Pi running a dedicated LLM off a battery in a sling bag or something with a small external mic, external speaker, and an earbud for the user. This would be rather bulky, but totally acceptable as it fits the DEDICATED device need. This device does the same in a smaller package and seems to perform well. Its much better reviewed than similar devices in the space. Also, of Mrs. Techhut was nervous about being on screen due to her appearance, she has nothing to worry about. Shes very pretty. Another nerd bro like myself coming up with a win lol.

Hey the translation to portuguese works really well. I watch quite a few videos of your channel, that help me a lot. Great job you are doing on the vídeos!

I like the form factor but it's a very old android phone in terms of specs. It looks like a thinner folded up galaxy fold

I recently had a nice holiday to Japan and used the on device (i.e. offline) translation on the iPhone and it is crazy good how far not just machine translation has come but all on device. Very cool. So helpful for translating menus, signs and such as well as voice conversations :D Also offline maps are a god send too! Have a good trip to Taiwan dude!

I'm sure there is an use case for this, if it would be 100% offline. For traveling business and engineering people talking about secret stuff, without being intercepted. I'm a bit old-school, so instead of a translation device, i learned the languages for the places i'm working and regularly traveling and if i need help my SO speaks six languages. The UK and US english function makes sense, if it supports local accents. I lived in the UK midlands (Black Country) for some time during my twenties and the accent from there can be difficult for americans and other english speakers to understand.

So you're going to carry this AND a phone with you to Taiwan?? Watching this makes me want to check whether you've reviewed the Rabbit R1 too... hmmm.

@@TechHut Yeah, it does. When you turned it over it looked nicely thick -- wanted to get a whiff of its new-product smell :) After unboxing I'd give it a few weeks of a user's attention before ending-up in a briefcase, backpack or drawer -- worldwide data or not. How long you think before it's jailbroken and turned into a rightgeous mobile device versus its current one-trick-pony existence?

The device is obviously is just a phone with old hardware and only app installed. But I will not hand over my phone with personal data to a stranger to let him type, read, record or listen something. While handing over such kind of device I only risk to lose translator.

I hate to be that guy, but it seems like another Rabbit R1 that could have just been an app. Though having a dedicated device has its uses, you don't run its battery down as fast.

what about privacy? is the device sending every translation back to the company's server to train AI?
@TechHut
@TechHut 3 ай бұрын
They claim they don't, and everything is processed on the device. If you don't trust that you could always download one of the offline languages and disable connectivity.

Doesn't Google Translate app do exactly this? It's offline capabilities are very limited, true, but even this device needs a global SIM connection and the app's data usage (in my experience at least) is quite minimal and manageable.

People looking for a device like this want a dedicated device, and not something else to be switching back and forth to on their phone. I'd already be running running KZbin, Wayze, a browser, social media, and taking picture with my phone while abroad. I wouldnt want to have to switch back and forth with a translation app that is intended to be use the entirety of the time as well. I'd much rather have a dedicated device doing only translation and not crushing my battery on my phone.
