In Portugal, back in the 80's, we had the French version (subtitled in Portuguese) and it was such a huge hit that even today, there isn't a single soul from that time who doesn't remember the intro. It was that powerful. I came here to listen to the original and see if they had butchered something even better... but quite honestly, I am glad they chose to do an alternate version. This a good song, but sounds like a generic music from the 80's. The French version sounds timeless. It hasn't aged at all. It remains one of the coolest, most epic songs created for an anime series.

The Japanese music tracks sound like temporary placeholder content, whereas the French / English music is an amazing collection of ethnic and delay-heavy synths and quite possibly one of the very best anime soundtracks of all time. What a shame that the entire Japanese market didn't get to hear all those great compositions.

Translation of Opening & Ending theme: Boukensha tachi (The adventurers) If your heart loses its wings, The word "dream" will disappear. You won't find the word impossible in your dictionary of youth, You might make mistakes sometimes though. The horizon is spreading endlessly, Seagulls will be your guide. Try my best. Go to the east, to the west, to the south, and to the north. Try my best. Everyone is an adventurer. When your body forgets the wild, Your world becomes narrower. Miracles won't come to you if you just wait. Nothing happens just by praying. The horizon that floats on the mirage is, The map of future that swells in hope. Try my best. Go to the east, to the west, to the south, and to the north. Try my best. Everyone is an adventurer. Itsuka dokoka de anata ni atta (I met you someday somewhere) I felt that I've met you someday somewhere. That impression might be a dream or misunderstanding. However when I saw you for the first time, that kind of thought spread all over my heart. friend oh! oh! my friend friend my friend You're such a good friend, so are you. I won't tell you such things though. Perhaps, I won't let go of your hands, Even if the wind blows enough to tear it off. friend I felt that I've met you someday somewhere. People sometimes feel the excitement of their hearts like a destiny, With the joy of basking in the light of dawn. friend oh! oh! my friend friend my friend You're such a good friend, so are you. I won't tell you such things though. My hot passion doesn't change, even if the rain is freezing cold. friend friend

"Try my best!" Somehow, that seems an understatement considering the stakes of crossing the ocean and entering a world of danger in an unexplored land against nature, natives, disease, natural disaster, and the myriad ways of winding up dead. :-D

Sorry, but the French and/or English versions of this opening song are way better and more suited to the ethnicity of the characters and the overall sense of adventure.

The failure of MCOG in the US was due to the fact that Nickleodeon was an unknown cable channel in the 1980's with few people watching it. In England and Australia, it was shown on national TV broadcasters in prime slots for kids to watch and was a huge hit. Had MCOG been on NBC, CBS, etc it would of been a huge hit. Back in 1966, Kimba The White Lion (japanese cartoon) was shown on NBC and was loved by everyone.

@coreallan Hi from America so your an anime junkie too huh? well since it never came to your country I have an idea why. Part of it was done in France as a joint venture then dubbed into english sent to england than america via Dic (though I never saw a logo) maybe at the time Dic didnt have a deal in your area or stations weren't impressed with it for some reason like it not being action oriented enough.
