I lived in a dorm at Michigan State from 1988-1990. On Thursday nights, a trio of girls down the hall from me opened their door and invited anyone who wanted to watch A Different World to come in and find a seat on their floor. It brought together girls who grew up in Detroit who roomed together with girls who grew up in Grand Rapids that roomed together. It's hard to explain but it was like for that one night at least, the black students invited the non racist white students to come see a part of their culture and experiences. It's one of my best memories of dorm living.

That's just it. Dwayne didn't really "bust up" the wedding. When Whitley froze up after the preacher asked her to accept the vows and started seeing Dwayne's face everywhere, she was unconsciously giving Dwayne one last chance, one last opening, to get her back. As she sees Dwayne literally being dragged away from her, she can't let him slip away. Then, we get the "I DO!" And she runs to her true love.

Jasmine Guy..if you ever see this, you are amazing. Then & now. You were a huge part of my childhood and I have always admired your beauty, style, grace, talent and authenticity. I wish you many more years of success and your daughter is beautiful just like you. ❤🖤❤🖤

I always adored her in the many rolls that I have seen her play, but as an actor myself I Revere her even more. (And yes when I was a kid in the late '80s and '90s I loved her as Whitley). Also her character in "The vampire diaries" as the matriarch of a very powerful magical family was awesome... Under used, but awesome. Get it woman!!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

That wedding tho..... marvelous. Marvelous!!! Whitley was a great character....she did more for ADW than Lisa Bonet. Sorry not sorry. I do miss that b****! Cree is awesome, Kadeem too.

Never understood the admiration for Lisa, she couldn't act for shit
@whoisdickieschnabel2 жыл бұрын
@@beyourself2444 Her character's place was best with her siblings. She was artsy, not a true scholar like Sandra or Vanessa, not an exuberant athletic type like Theo, not a cute kid like Rudy....Denise was quirky and gentle but we already saw who was getting the star treatment with Denise in the lead: Marisa Tomei. Whitley probably would've continued as her one dimensional foil, jealous and snobby. Dwayne would've graduated loving her from afar, worshipping unrequited. Without Denise, something truly magical happened, for ALL the characters. I hope we never forget ADW. It was so special.

@@beyourself2444 : She was a great actress. Cosby doesn’t surround himself with no-talents. Secondly, she was absolutely stunning!

@@DeCurtaRican I beg to differ...you must have forgotten about the actors who played Denise's husband and Elvin....they haven't done much of anything since the show has been off the air....I dont even know their names...lol...he (Cosby) picked the right people to play a character that was needed at the time, and he probably had to mold and shape them continuously in order to get the best out of them....so , im afraid you're mistaken

I understand you being tired of being called Whitley Gilbert but you can’t be mad that you played that role so well that we all still love you as Whitley. You should be proud of that not run from it. ❤️❤️

Us non actors have to put ourselves in her shoes, imagine auditioning for other roles because you're an actor and not being given a chance because you've been typecast. It's a double edged sword, directors want the best actor for the role/part but because the actor has nailed the character, they can't get cast in anything else!

@@shawnjones4527 I get it I’ve seen her in other roles it’s hard because she was such a good whitley

Hollywood is in the business of making money and plenty of actors have gotten pigeon holed playing a certain type, they throw ridiculous amounts of money at you, sometimes if you don't play you can't get to work at all...

My favorite role Jasmine Guy ever played was Alice in Stomping at the Savoy. If you limit her to just Whitley you miss out on quite a bit!

I remember that. I'm not sure if it was a mini-series or regular TV movie but she was great in it.

Acting is such a weird occupation. There are so many examples of amazing actors that are nothing like the characters they play. And if they are iconic roles then they are solidified in that character.
@ladennayoung29392 жыл бұрын
That is because people get caught up in the hype. And it just mean they did a really good job in that role when someone remember them for it and celebrate their work in that role for years to come.

She definitely made going to college cool for the black community. BTW Cissy Houston is hilarious. RIP WHITNEY HOUSTON
