I lived in a dorm at Michigan State from 1988-1990. On Thursday nights, a trio of girls down the hall from me opened their door and invited anyone who wanted to watch A Different World to come in and find a seat on their floor. It brought together girls who grew up in Detroit who roomed together with girls who grew up in Grand Rapids that roomed together. It's hard to explain but it was like for that one night at least, the black students invited the non racist white students to come see a part of their culture and experiences. It's one of my best memories of dorm living.

I didn't know that about the HBCU enrollment... very cool. I visited Howard for the first time when I was probably 28, 29 years old. It felt like hallowed ground. Unfortunately, it was during spring break so there weren't any students around, but I wanted to do the H-U You Know cheer with someone. I was looking for that role in Vampire Diaries to be mentioned. She is an amazing performer. In the late 80's whenever I met people in college they either said I reminded them of Lisa Bonet or Jasmine Guy. I always appreciated this because it meant that not only were people off all racial backgrounds aware of this awesome show but that they saw women of color as beautiful and we're willing to declare it publically in crowds of very little diversity.

Yes I agree with you. I like both of them but after watching such a real transparent woman express her true self. I love Jasmine Guy! There really is no comparison. Jasmine is talented and Lisa is interesting. Lisa Bonet has demonstrated that she has no interest in you knowing her just what you see and hear. This is one of the best Unsung. So happy that her upbringing brought her peace without the usual bad stuff celebrities run into. Jasmine is definitely someone to be proud of as a black woman. She's still awesome ♥️

The scene from School Daze, with the name calling, she said it was hard because the words were so hateful, is very telling. To perform that scene, all she had to do was pull it out of the air because the hatred hovers in our atmosphere. It's everywhere.

Dewayne busting that wedding open was what WE hoped for!!! Best scene and episodes of "Different World " to me!! It made me want the fairytale relationship from then on. I have my own fairytale now of course but that scene was a staple of REAL LOVE .
@MCWAY1
@MCWAY1 6 ай бұрын
That's just it. Dwayne didn't really "bust up" the wedding. When Whitley froze up after the preacher asked her to accept the vows and started seeing Dwayne's face everywhere, she was unconsciously giving Dwayne one last chance, one last opening, to get her back. As she sees Dwayne literally being dragged away from her, she can't let him slip away. Then, we get the "I DO!" And she runs to her true love.

A Different World was a ground breaking tv show and was even beating the Cosby Show in the ratings.Both shows were smash hits.ADW even made me went to attend college but unfortunately my moms needed help moneywise.She was a single woman raising 5 girls and myself,so I joined the navy,figured I could help moms out more in the military than college.Even got a bonus from the navy which I set some of it to my moms.She sounded soooo happy over the phone with the money I sent.

@@beyourself2444 Her character's place was best with her siblings. She was artsy, not a true scholar like Sandra or Vanessa, not an exuberant athletic type like Theo, not a cute kid like Rudy....Denise was quirky and gentle but we already saw who was getting the star treatment with Denise in the lead: Marisa Tomei. Whitley probably would've continued as her one dimensional foil, jealous and snobby. Dwayne would've graduated loving her from afar, worshipping unrequited. Without Denise, something truly magical happened, for ALL the characters. I hope we never forget ADW. It was so special.

Us non actors have to put ourselves in her shoes, imagine auditioning for other roles because you're an actor and not being given a chance because you've been typecast. It's a double edged sword, directors want the best actor for the role/part but because the actor has nailed the character, they can't get cast in anything else!
