A Different World is an American sitcom (and a spin-off of The Cosby Show) television series that aired for six seasons on NBC from September 24, 1987 to July 9, 1993. The series originally centered on Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet) and the life of students at Hillman College, a fictional historically black college in Virginia. It was inspired by student life at historically black colleges and universities.[1][2][3] After Bonet's departure in the first season, the remainder of the series primarily focused more on Southern belle Whitley Gilbert-Wayne (Jasmine Guy) and math whiz Dwayne Cleofis Wayne (Kadeem Hardison).
Concept
While it was a spin-off from The Cosby Show, A Different World typically addressed issues that were avoided by The Cosby Show writers (race and class relations, or the Equal Rights Amendment). One episode that aired in 1990 was one of the first American network television episodes to address the epidemiology of HIV/AIDS.[4]
The original premise was to have a white student there and have Lena Horne as an acting teacher, but in production, the premise changed from being a story about a white girl in a black college to a black girl (Denise Huxtable) in a black college with a white friend.[5][6] It was ultimately decided that Denise, who was of college age, would be spun off and have a white roommate in order to show the dynamic of a white girl in predominantly black surroundings.[7] Meg Ryan was originally cast for this role, but she decided to pursue a film career, so Marisa Tomei was cast.[citation needed] The first season of Hillman's student body consisted of both black and white students, but this was changed at the beginning of the second season and a predominantly black student body maintained until the series ended.
Season two changes
After the first season, it came to Cosby's and the producers' attention that the series was not accurately portraying a historically black college and life on campus, so Debbie Allen, an alumna of Howard University, was hired as the chief creative force to revamp the show. During the summer of 1988, Lisa Bonet announced that she and husband Lenny Kravitz were having a baby. Allen was in favor of having a young pregnant student in the show, but Cosby said that Lisa Bonet may be pregnant but not Denise Huxtable.[8] It was felt that viewers would not accept Denise as an unwed mother, having grown to know her as a "good girl" after four seasons of The Cosby Show. Thus it was decided that Denise would drop out of Hillman, return home to her family, and eventually travel to Africa throughout the fifth season of The Cosby Show, ensuring that viewers would not see a pregnant Denise. Allen was also in favor of keeping Tomei, as she herself recalled a white student at Howard and wanted to relate that in the show and even had possible premises for her character, such as meeting Dwayne's parents and seeing the other side of racism.[8] However, Tomei left the show, and she and Marie-Alise Recasner were replaced by Cree Summer and Charnele Brown, respectively. Darryl M. Bell and Sinbad were promoted to the principal cast, and Glynn Turman and Lou Myers were added as supporting cast members. These changes led to the placement of Whitley and Dwayne at the center of a wider ensemble, dealing with more relevant issues of the day.

I really like how Dawnn Lewis said she paid off her student loans with her salary. She truly came full circle, by ironically paying off her real student loans by playing a college student.

We deserved to see ourselves as informed, concerned, able to talk about more than the latest hairstyles and dance moves! This show gave us permission to be young and Black and educated! I really enjoyed this show, and it did try to educate you and keep you laughing at the same time. Like BLACKISH, I love thought provoking shows...episodes that had you still talking or thinking when the episode was over. I still re-watch sum episodes sometimes. also it was a part of the Mighty Thursday night line up, sure I was a little pissed when Cosby used his influence and got FAMILY TIES moved to make room for A DIFFERENT WORLD, but I got over it. 8pm: THE COSBY SHOW 8:30: A DIFFERENT WORLD 9:00: CHEERS 9:30: NIGHT COURT 10pm: LA LAW...you'll never see all this goodness ever again on a network channel in one night.

This show educated an entire generation. I was 11 when that Cats In The Cradle episode aired, and my New York Italian-American self grew up with plenty of diversity yet had never even heard the N word before. I remember watching it alone in my converted basement bedroom, and asking my parents the next day what that word meant, and I couldn't wrap my mind around why people would say such a slur (meanwhile I was getting called the F word at school too and didn't understand that either at the time. I hate hate. We should all love). From that day on, I remember vowing to always fight for equality and I was freakin' 11!!! That's the power of great art, and this show was great art, and inspired children to fight for what is right. Thanks for posting this, brought back great memories! Don't even get me started on how amazing it was to see Patti LaBelle and Diahann Carroll play together!

YESSSS. That's what I remember. Black women wearing natural hair. Which means an entire cast of black hair being done and was possible. It confused me, listening so many black women in TV in popular shows saying they had to wear weave because they didn't have hair stylist on their shows who could work with their hair. Debbie had a whole cast of black hair and lot of the other shows hada token or two tokens or black people on their shows and they couldn't get anybody to do their hair.

Season 1 didn't live up to what the show was suppose to be about which was "real black college experience" including fraternity/sorority and just an overall black historical culture. Debbie added new characters like Kim Reese and more also switching how some of the characters act as well. I love that the show addressed serious topics ex: rape, abuse, aids, & more. Debbie did her thang not only she's a good choreographer but she's good a producer the show wouldn't have last past season 1 without her help.

I feel it would be their times to play the mom's and dad's to their tv character spouses and the children they had and a different world would never end and it'll deal with the battles of life as its portrayed now, but with a new twist on it and new writings from us that watch and supported the show all 6 season's. Only thing though, my Mr. Gains wouldn't be there to see your tv character children come to college and be apart of the pit and vittles. And my Ms. Gilbert Whitley's mom. And lastly, it would be up to this cast to want to do a run for their money's playing parents to college students.

Both of the people that played Whitley's parents are deceased as well. But they could do a reunion with the students. It would even be good to have Lisa and Marissa involved.

People say the show was better when Bonet was fired, but it was better because Allen made it way more serious. It would have been very interesting to have seen Bonet deal with material that dealt with social issues and not the fluff that Cosby was shoving down people’s throats.

Funny thing is i enjoyed the first season but i felt like it didnt really cover the college life. it covered more of the freshman experience than anything. back then having denise huxtable pregnant would have not went well with viewers. and i always wondered why denise decided to go to africa now it all makes sense. technically if Lisa Bonet didnt leave a different world, Raven Symone wouldve just been another snotty nosed kid.
