@@simplevikingyeah the big cities can be pretty wimpy when it comes to stopping rioters. There was a famous time a couple years ago where Seattle police and politicians surrendered to rioters who took over a small chunk of the city for about a month till they ran out of resources and gave up.

American small town girl here--my ancestors are farmers from Fryksande, Varmland Sweden. Great message and song. It's not racist. When I heard it, I thought it was so uniting and got sad when hearing people thought it was racist, because it meant they were looking for racism and were assuming criminals are black, which is wrong.

I'm from the Netherlands, and I don't think this song is racist - but there are some things that can be viewed as racist depending on the context. Lines like "Full of good ol' boys, raised up right" uses language particular to the South, and has connotations of the typical white male. I think calling that racist isn't so much 'looking for racism' as much as it is being hyper-aware of racism. The unfortunate fact is that damages, civil unrest and rioting like this are by NO means a new thing for the United States - anyone who's interested in the civil rights history of the late 20th century will know these riots are almost cyclical. There's the Watts riot and nationwide riots in 1965 and 1967, the Miami riots in 1980, the Rodney King riots in 1992, Cincinatti in 2001, and most recently George Floyd. Clearly there's an ongoing issue here that is being failed to address, which leads to simmering tensions. Tense people are more aware of possible slights, which is why Americans often almost seem over-eager to call out racism (or that's my personal theory, anyway.). As an aside, and this may be a personal gripe, but would it kill people to stop using the term 'canceled'? Who 'canceled' what? A bunch of people on Twitter and Reddit called it racist? Sucks, but freedom of speech says they can do it. Did they organise a grass-roots thingie, collect signatures to get it pullled from tv-channels or radio? Did actual words end up getting changed in the song from this pressure? Remember, if you can't be specific about something, you might not understand that something as well as you think you do.

You have to consider the whole background here. The US was built on a highly racist system, everything from laws to police were put in place to keep a part of the population socially and economically down. Even though many laws have been long revoked, the structures created are often still in place. That is called structural racism, and that is what is being protested against. Combine this with lack of other social services, the police has taken over duties it never should have. They even received military equipment from recent wars and in some places act like a military force. You cannot compare that at all with a working European social state where the police is much more restricted. Not only is the assessment in this video wrong, the underlying message with the courthouse where that many lynchings took place is a clear message against African Americans. And the wish for a glorious past, when America was „great“ is also a wish to go back to segregation. „MAGA“ in itself is a deeply racist message.

@jaschaschmidt Жыл бұрын
@@TheLordRipper All the clips, at least the ones that aren't fake, are supposed to show outbursts that happened at demonstrations that were generally assigned to the left-wing spectrum. I think most people will agree with me. In recent years, however, there have also been similar incidents at demonstrations that are to be assigned to the right spectrum. The storming of the Capitol is a good example. Especially because there was clearly violence against police officers during the storming, a point that other clips in the video emphasize. This is not addressed at all in the video. This leads to the conclusion that the title of the song is directed only at left-wing demonstrators and the singer is at least indifferent to the outrages at right-wing demonstrations.

American here, The major reason for the riot type protests in the past years is because of the racial inequality especially by law enforcement and government. The reason the riots happen a lot in cities is because of redlining and the hight density of POC in those areas, and therefore the high density of black people unlawfully killed by law enforcement. The people protesting are the ones who have their everyday lives impacted by the repercussions of racism (and people who are supporting them). A big reason this song is racist and problematic is that it ignores the context of the riots and situations that the videos embedded are from. It is basically the anthem of "sit down and shut up, because in the country we would band together to keep 'your people' out." The lyrics and video are literally written as disrespectful people are not allowed and we'll hurt them, but the subject of that shifts when you consider the long embedded history of slavery and racism in the American south. The disrespectful, evil archetype of his song is people standing up against racism (Which is often Black people and various other POC.) Where the video itself is filmed is a further allusion to the intent. All of American history has anecdotes that boil down to 'we wouldn't hate the black people, the Mexicans, or the natives if they just stopped trying to have rights'. No amount of having grace in fighting racism has granted dignity, the change that has happened has only ever come from taking power. No one would be drawn to destroy symbols of their home country if its government was serving them appropriately.

If you don't think it affects your daily life, that is great for you! clearly other people don't feel that way. The question was why people think the song is racist. Not why @@tuijakantola6550 has a problem with people who clearly have a different lived experience. There are places where people still struggle against a system that technically shouldn't be oppressing them. its not in the past if its still happening somewhere.

The video/song does have racist undertones that you wouldn’t pick up on if you are unaware of the history. “Small Towns” have a long history of violence sanctioned & sometimes perpetrated by law enforcement against Black people in America while the community at large looks the other way. It’s dismissive to imply that racism is a paranoia that people are “looking” for as a white man who would be treated as more of a citizen than many Americans of color who have roots here that go back hundreds of years. I hope you do more research and allow for the nuances that maybe you’ve missed not understanding how deep these things go in America.
