Jasons true passion was and is Motorcross. In his day he was a national champion. It was his dad that wanted him to play drums. Out of an obligation to his father after his passing Jason gave up his promising career in Motorcross to pursue his fathers wishes. So internet talkers please show a little respect for a fathers son. John was a legend it would be hard for anyone to fill his shoes. Robert, Jimmie and John Paul are like uncles to him. Its a family thing.

Man some of you making negative comments about how bad Jason is compared to his dad seriously need to get a life. No one, least of all Jason, thinks he plays like his dad. He has his own unique style all his own and that's all that matters. A lot of jealous haters on here who walk around with rain clouds over their head every day.
@tp1048811 жыл бұрын
Well said. The way people dis each other these days, it's a wonder we can get through the day. But some people have no lives and all they can do is criticize for the sake of criticizing. And I agree that Jason isn't like his dad exclusively. When you hear him play with other groups like Foreigner or Black Country Communion, you see how versatile he really is.
@misfit202210 жыл бұрын
I also think if you are going to criticise you need to understand what he is playing. No n drummers do not realise the difference between a good drummer and a bad drummer. If I said to my non drummer friends what do you think of Phil Collins they tend to either judge him on his personality of the simple fill in In the air tonight without realising what a truly outstanding drummer he was both with Genesis and Brand X. Jason Bonham will forever be compared to his father but he is not his father. John Bonham had a style that everyone including myself has tried to replicate but no one has. The possible closest fit to John Bonham is Carmine Appice. That said Jason Bonham is still a damned good drummer. Most rock drummers whether they are Blas Elias, Frankie Banali or Dave Grohl are heavily influenced by John Bonham. That is just a fact and it is never going to change. I can imagine some 10 year old child in his room now listening to Good Times Bad Times and trying to work out what John Bonham is playing with those 16th note triplets and the reason why is because no one has affected us in the way John Bonham has and considering he recorded Led Zep 1 in 1968 and it is now 2015 and we are still having the same discussion. I think this discussion is going to run and run because I do not see anyone ever being as important to rock drumming as John Bonham. Some of you may think that is a naïve view but it has not happened yet in nearly 50 years.
@monroefive-o407 жыл бұрын
They all need to realize Jason isn't John reborn. He is his own man and has is own sound. No one will ever sound like John cause he had his own mind and the way he wanted to sound. Just because they share the same DNA, don't mean they will play alike.

Jason Bonham uses a variety of Ludwig®/Conn-Selmer kits derived from his late dad's outfits with Led Zeppelin, albeit substituting Avedis Zildjian cymbals for the Paiste 2002's: A 26" x 14" kick, 18" x 16" and 16" x 16" floor toms, a 14" x 10" rack tom, and a 14" x 6-1/2" snare drum. Were I ordering a kit for a Big Band, I'd do a more comprehensive big-drum set-up with better-scaled sizes: Dual 26" x 16" kicks; 20" x 18", 18" x 16", and 16" x 14" floor toms; 14" x 12", 12" x 10", 10" x 9", and 8" x 9" rack toms on double stands; 14" x 8" center drum (ideally an NOS LC-S483-YX); and 14" x 5" left snare drum (L-M410-XX). Heads: Evans/D'Addario, BD26EMADHW batters on kicks (driving Ludwig/Conn-Selmer LW-4226-V resonants), B08EC2S through B20EC2S (even) tom batters driving TT08GR through TT20GR resonants; B14HW driving TT14RGL on center drum; B14HD driving S14GEN30 on left snare drum. Snare cartridges: Ludwig/Conn-Selmer L-1108 on center drum, L-0671 on left snare drum.

@misfit202210 жыл бұрын
For rock drumming I completely agree and despite being a punk drummer I spent a large proportion of my teens learning every Led Zeppelin song I could find due to my love of his bass drum work but then go back further and listen to Joe Morello and you can see where some of John's ideas came from. Also as someone else has mentioned Fool by Led Zep is the Bernard Purdie half time shuffle but Bonham does play it very well indeed. John Bonham is my favourite drummer due to his feel and the way he used his technique but there are technically better drummers such as Steve Smith from Journey. I think only drummers know how good Steve Smith is as he often plays it very straight with Journey but if you listen to some of his Steps Ahead rhythms you realise just how good he is and from there you start getting into people like Steve Gadd and realise a lot of training and technique is the only way to play those rhythms.

misfit yea, I agree, Steve Smith is also very good... but to me, nobody compares to Bonham. it might be because he was the first drummer I'd ever actually listened to, or the first one to get my attention, but it was Bonham and zeppelin that got me playing, so for that, Bonham will ALWAYS BE my #1 pick.

He plays a lot like his father. His father had a different way which to me set him apart from most all drummers. How can you measure the best ? I can say this about John Bonham, he mastered his craft. He took his job seriously and perfected each Led zeppelin song. He was a humorous guy and a good father. He loved Led zeppelin and didn't hold nothing back for the band. He loved drumming, probably more than his son. I'm glad his son is having a good time with the legacy his father gave him. Jason is a fantastic player, no doubt about it but he should never be compared to his father because most drummers couldn't. Jason looks seems like a well grounded man and if he wants to dote about his father well I'm unbiased, he's dad was fuckin drummer going in his day.
@liamfitzgerald72174 жыл бұрын
There's a great bit from a John Paul Jones interview about when they were rehearsing together for the first time. This was for the MSG reunion gig they did in the late 80's/early 90's, something like that. Anywho, Jones says that they were playing away and, during Ramble On, he threw in this old fill that he use to do. What surprised him was that Jason managed to play along with it which, as Jones described it, is something that's difficult to do unless the rhythm section has been 'married for 10 years'. When the song was over, Jason looked at him and went 'Chicago, 1974'. If that doesn't show his hard work ethic, I don't know what will.
@leonardomartinez55437 жыл бұрын
Definitely Jason doesn't have is Father rhythm probably very small detail that are not interested because they so little detail. One thing I did really saw is that Jason didn't change is own style on that video playing drums with the one playing 6 or 7 year old. What I could see in this video that same unique of Jason style in both videos with the difference of ages of course but the style didn't changed at all. That was very impressive. He's dad taught how to play but Jason took is own style not he's dad. I play drum have his dad configuration drum set. and I took my own style. great.

I agree but there is a big difference between playing around with a few friends and playing live with a band. When I have been playing around and my friends have said play x, play y and you just start playing around and you are bound to make mistakes whereas if you are following the rhythm of the songs you know well you are on the beat and focussed. It was very clear he was not focussed here. This does not detract from his skill as a drummer.
