It's just the fans of the big metal festivals and modern metal genres (djent, core, hyped prog etc.) who only know of Thomas Haake, Mike Portnoy, Mario Duplantier, Joey Jordison, Danny Carey, Chris Adler, The Rev, Brann Dailor.. and George Kollias and Blake Richardson if they consider themselves "cvlt" or in-the-know with the underground scene.

@Matthew.E.Kelly. 5 жыл бұрын
This guy always had the best fills - he does other things well, too, don't get me wrong, but the one thing I've never heard anyone do right (no matter how good a drummer they are) is his fills & rolls. His style has a very unique & deft touch that probably came from his samba & jazz background.

@@Trollyulian I can't over-state the importance of having jazz as part of a formative musical education, it's had a huge impact on the people who get it as kids. I went to one of those shows and some drugged up freak in the front row kept yelling out “This is the new jazz, maaaannn!” after every piece. Considering that every tune was only about thirty seconds long, I unfortunately left with that mantra etched in my brain for life. 😭. To be fair, the entire free jazz genre sounds just like that, so, I guess he wasn’t off base with his ball tripping proclamation.

I live in Asheville, NC and work in a music shop called Skinny Beats. Dave came into the shop and played bunch of gongs and djembe. We talked about music, and it was awesome. He was in town with Testament, and hooked me up with backstage passes. I got to go backstage and meet the guys from Testament (Chuck, Alex, Steve Digiorgio, Dave Lombardo). It was one of the coolest days ever.

I remember the first time I heard this dude. I was like, "There's no friggen way". I was thinking that they slowed the tape down while he recorded and then played it back at normal speed while they mixed it down. Because there is no way a person can play that fast and that explosive for that length of time. Then I went to my first Slayer show in a little bar or something down in Houston. And I realized just how friggen wrong I was. Even today he's fast as hell. I'd be willing to bet that if he air drummed without a kit in front of him, you could probably hear his arms buzz. Like some huge fly buzzing around. But nope. It's Dave. Playing air drums. Buzzing like a herd of houseflies.
