In YOUR opinion..though. Paul Bostaph is pretty fucking good himself, and no he is not a Lombardo clone, he is there to play what Lombardo composed on the drums while he was in Slayer, along with what he created. He has been doing it ALMOST as long as Dave has.

I was just saying this the other day. My brother and I got into it. We’re both drummers (must have been tons of fun for Mom and Dad) and were talking about his best album with them. We both agreed that Seasons is our favorite Slayer album, but his work on South of Heaven is fucking insane. Silent Scream alone is probably the most brutal drumming I have ever heard. Anyway, much respect for this man. Truly one of the greats.

Those who now bands form before the 90's often mention Lombardo and Hoglan (rightfully so). It's just the fans of the big metal festivals and modern metal genres (djent, core, hyped prog etc.) who only know of Thomas Haake, Mike Portnoy, Mario Duplantier, Joey Jordison, Danny Carey, Chris Adler, The Rev, Brann Dailor.. and George Kollias and Blake Richardson if they consider themselves "cvlt" or in-the-know with the underground scene.

Elsden F.A. Yeah,,, sure... Pert was awesome don’t get me wrong at all but go watch the “yo watch the beat” quarantine jams with Charlie from anthrax on drums. They do like 4 rush covers and Charlie from anthrax barely breaks a sweat and would make Neil proud. Really good metal drummers are a different animal, not to take away from Neil, but I’m 200% positive They do stuff Neil would have at least had a hard time with,for a few minutes anyway.

This guy always had the best fills - he does other things well, too, don't get me wrong, but the one thing I've never heard anyone do right (no matter how good a drummer they are) is his fills & rolls. His style has a very unique & deft touch that probably came from his samba & jazz background.

I play in jeans all the time, but I don't kick like DL. If I play in cargo pants the stitching in the pocket on the thigh will chafe the knuckles on my left hand from the hand riding over it to cover the snare drum. I don't play in shorts at all because the insides of my knees end up grinding on the snare drum hardware.

I got to clean his drum set in the late 80s while on tour with Motorhead / Overkill. I was working security, checking out his kit when a roadie walked up with rags to clean it. I asked if I could clean it and he said NO problem and handed me the rags lmao. It was an absolute honor. I briefly talked to him back stage. He was the most mellow dude ever, super nice guy just hanging out with his girl. The way Slayer did him rubs me wrong to this day.

I went to one of those shows and some drugged up freak in the front row kept yelling out “This is the new jazz, maaaannn!” after every piece. Considering that every tune was only about thirty seconds long, I unfortunately left with that mantra etched in my brain for life. 😭. To be fair, the entire free jazz genre sounds just like that, so, I guess he wasn’t off base with his ball tripping proclamation.

I live in Asheville, NC and work in a music shop called Skinny Beats. Dave came into the shop and played bunch of gongs and djembe. We talked about music, and it was awesome. He was in town with Testament, and hooked me up with backstage passes. I got to go backstage and meet the guys from Testament (Chuck, Alex, Steve Digiorgio, Dave Lombardo). It was one of the coolest days ever.

I remember the first time I heard this dude. I was like, "There's no friggen way". I was thinking that they slowed the tape down while he recorded and then played it back at normal speed while they mixed it down. Because there is no way a person can play that fast and that explosive for that length of time. Then I went to my first Slayer show in a little bar or something down in Houston. And I realized just how friggen wrong I was. Even today he's fast as hell. I'd be willing to bet that if he air drummed without a kit in front of him, you could probably hear his arms buzz. Like some huge fly buzzing around. But nope. It's Dave. Playing air drums. Buzzing like a herd of houseflies.

@@leopardcubpupkryky6940 Really? Dont think so, no Drummer has so much Groove while he plays fast. Drums must be Groove and not sounds like a computer, thats the point. Alot of Drummers are great in technics maybe more than dave, but they dont groove on Speed like him, no one.

Glad they showed some of the Gathering album. His drumming on that was fucking outstanding.
