All the people that are commenting that “Morgan Wallen did the song better” are completely out of their minds. Morgan Wallen basically made this beautifully written song by Jason Isbell into a top 25 pop country song. No one and I mean NO ONE sings this song the way it’s supposed to be sung except Jason. It’s about pain and addiction and finding the love of a woman and sobering up forever for her. Morgan Wallen can sing. But he can’t sing this song the way it’s supposed to be sung. Only Jason Isbell can. End of story

Yes. He took a song that made me look at country in a new light after 5 decades of avoiding it into a typical sounding Nashville country hit. He's very talented, but his version doesn't pull the old heart strings.

Isbell is the most profound songwriter of this generation. I fell in love with him when he was with DBT in my college years and realized that the Trucker's peaked with him, yet when he left, he continued to develop as a singer, songwriter and musician. Amanda compliments him so well or should I say, they compliment one another. Isbell's music carried me through my darkest days my daughter passed and my life became a wreck fueled with iv drug addiction, alcohol and whatever else I could find that made me feel better for the moment. The line, "days when we raged we flew off the page, such damage was done. but i made it through, cause somebody knew i was meant for someone" was prophetic in my life 5 years ago. I listened to it daily as I pulled up another shot, thinking the end was near for me....Now, 4 years clean and sober, i realize that message had meaning and I am remarried, had 2 beautiful twin girls last 4th of July and graduate grad school tomorrow with an MBA and a Master's of Science in Leadership. I know it wasn't just music that carried me but there are days where I don't think I would have made it without it. Thanks for doing what you do with such power and conviction. Your music has moved my soul~

For sure! in love with one now, and the whole thing about covering him up...I do alot when he finally passes out wherever, then there are nights I stay up to keep the fire in the wood stove going, we collect driftwood for art, and my favorite tree is a magnolia, in which we just planted one. He has heard this song, I think it gets to him, because when it plays he turns it or leaves the room, I cry every time I hear it, this is the perfect song. And it is a very tough road to stay on , but I pray and have faith that one day this terrible addiction will be over. I dont want to lose him, definetly not over an addiction.

A heart on the run keeps a hand on the gun You can't trust anyone I was so sure what I needed was more Tried to shoot out the sun Days when we raged, we flew off the page Such damage was done But I made it through, 'cause somebody knew I was meant for someone So girl, leave your boots by the bed We ain't leaving this room Till someone needs medical help Or the magnolias bloom It's cold in this house and I ain't going out to chop wood So cover me up and know you're enough To use me for good Put your faith to the test when I tore off your dress In Richmond on high But I sobered up and I swore off that stuff Forever this time And the old lover's sing “I thought it'd be me who helped him get home” But home was a dream One I'd never seen till you came along So girl, hang your dress up to dry We ain't leaving this room Till Percy Priest breaks open wide And the river runs through And carries this house on the stones Like a piece of driftwood Cover me up and know you're enough To use me for good So girl, leave your boots by the bed We ain't leaving this room Till someone needs medical help Or the magnolias bloom It's cold in this house and I ain't going out to chop wood So cover me up and know you're enough To use me for good Cover me up and know you're enough To use me for good

So tired of much of today’s music, even country, that is not fresh but just rehashed hollow melodies with words strung between chords like bare bulbs on a wire between the tent poles. The minute these songs are over the melody is not even memorable. But this song’s melody is like a fine knit blanket with the words, chords and melodies woven together, inseparable and unforgettable.

ISBELL is such a great artist. This guy Brett McDaniel is good too. I just found him kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIjTqKGBmK-tqLs Isbell is untouchable though. He is like our Bob Dylan

I visited Fame Studios in Mussel Shoals AL. On display is the handwritten lyrics of this song Jason wrote for Morgan. In his early career Jason was hired by Rick Hall as a song writer. He didn’t disappoint.

Jumped at the opportunity to see him in Aurora, IL in June 2015 - He introduced his wife who was pregnant at the time, and then introduced them as his "whole damn family!" They played this song later and the crowd lost it when he sang "..I swore off that stuff, forever this time.." His lyrics and stage performance connect!

Well I am glad I liked this as well as the cover of it BY Home Free ! - as when those boys do a song - they own it. Oddly enough I like the tenor herein by Jason ..... though it is rough and powerful for a ballad .... the H.F. method is sweet harmony and a baritone register lead vocal By Adam Chance - a three Register Vocal Talent .... that could have done it higher but, Chose for effect, I imagine to brood N' mood the feel of it. Both are great versions - Kudos to Jason for a great melody and killer thoughtful lyrics ! GBjj

I’ve been a fan since it was $10 a ticket to see Jason-as a songwriter myself-I almost wish I’ve never heard his songs. I love them but they piss me off because they’re so good! 😮

Ryan Harvey I know that feeling mate. It’s difficult to live up to your own expectations when the songwriters you admire are Isbell, van Zandt, Springsteen, Guy Clark and so on.

It's a good thought, that I hear tossed around a lot, but I don't think it's true. Take look back at the hits over the years and you'll find nothing like this there either. The majority of the most popular music has always been oddly bad.
