I cry every time I listen to this song “I think the best of me is still standing in the doorway”

Man, I wish he'd play this live. Jason, if you read this, play this live in Chattanooga in a few months. Please. Love this song, it's my hometown and reminds me of conversations with my single mom.

saw jason live in glasgow 'accidentally'... despite being a minor drive by truckers fan I shamefully didnt recognise his name. blown away, was far better than the headliner who shall remain anonymous. amazing how much meaning he packs into his songs.

Love this song, though it does sound a lot like Jackson Browne's "The Barricades of Heaven".
I think this might be the only example I can think of where I disagree with one of Isbell's songwriting choices: including the word "Daddy." It's a little too on-the-nose for my taste. Nevertheless, a great song.

He kinda delivers it with snark.

@@GuitarPlayerNoah "Daddy" is simply what Southerners call their fathers. And all the clear mixed feelings the song contains - the loss and love - are expressed in his quiet whisper of that word. Wouldn't be as heartrending without it. At least for the Southerners listening.

@@cmbadass He delivers it with heartbreak, not snark. That's what's so good about the song.

I didn’t recognize the word “daddy” the way he slides it in. Liked the song a lot. Years after I looked at the lyrics. When i realized he was saying Daddy, it changed the song. Instead of a boyfriend or girlfriend who left.. it was his or hers Father. Fucking destroyed me. I had to pull my car over to the side of the road. Daddy is the way to go with this one
