You know.....when Willie departs to join the band with Waylon and Johnny....guys like this will carry the torch and remind us of the timeless beauty of a perfect country song. And we got Lyle Lovett and Steve Earle to carry us through. But maybe ....Willie gonna outlive us all. Barbarossa!

This is my favorite song of all-time. There is not a missed lyric in it. Each line is a bullseye. How many songwriters would write a song about being a drunk and their woman leaving them and just write a bunch of cliches about "baby, please come back" or "baby, I miss you." But he hung the whole premise of the song on describing how he would miss her so bad that he would miss the simple pleasure of hearing her sing in the shower. Absolutely brilliant.

It is difficult to imagine, but I might just agree with you that if this is not the best song he has ever written, it is near the top. Man, I just can't get over this. I have been following Jason from even before he met Amanda, and listened to his songs many times over. This may be his best.

But I would be remiss if I did not mention Amada's violin work, wonderful harmonies, and that keyboard man's marvelous work.

Wish Jason would bring this back into the rotation. Heard in live In Richmond and it floored the crowd. The guy next to us was a struggling performer and he said it was the best crafted song he had ever heard. Jason is a treasure.

Isbell once said that he and Amanda were watching 'The Theory of Everything' together (Stephen Hawking movie), and he casually said "Hon, would you still have loved me if I only had a couple of years to live when you met me?" and she said "Oh baby, you did only have a couple of years to live when I met you." Saw them at Red Rocks last summer for the 4th time, if you ever have the chance, do not miss Isbell and the 400 Unit.

Just watched the HBO doc about Jason and Amanda. The segment of Jason at the private gig two days before he went into rehab is one of the most painful things I have ever watched. Makes songs like this all the more compelling. No secret that Jason suffers for his art; as do all of those around him. Fans included. Sometimes I wonder if Jason is like a car that lost a wheel and somebody put on the doughnut spare with two lug nuts instead of five and is now getting up to freeway speed...

Love him as much today as then! :)

I first encountered him as a solo artist in Nashville in 2015. My wife is a huge country music fan (I'm not) and dragged me around the Hall of Fame, which I loved. In one part there is an Americana section, and there was a small exhibit saying how Jason Isbell had picked up Song of the Year for Come Pick Me Up. It also mentioned his time with the Drive By Truckers, whose music I was familiar with. That night I looked him up on KZbin and was blown away. This song was the second one of his I played. Two months later he brought him band over to the UK and I dragged my wife along. She was blown away by his performance. He's been back to the UK since and we saw him/ them again in another memorable show. Hopefully they'll be back again soon to tour the new album.

God Jason Isbell is such a great musician and singer songwriter...he just keeps getting better... One of the best things that every happened to Jason---he got his ass booted from the Drive By Truckers---and meeting Amanda Shires--both things got him sober and saved his life to make this incredible music for us all to live by---god we need such wonderful music now more than ever!!!!

This song is brilliant... I picture Isbell writing this song while in rehab and thinking about if Amanda Shires would still be waiting for him on the outside, but from his experience expecting that she would not still be there. The lyrics are just spectacular from the opening about there are two types of men in this world and you are neither of them (basically calling the other dude a pussy and then getting punched for it) then moving into his girl leaving him and having to "summon the confidence needed to hear her goodbye". Leading to "another brief chapter without any answers moving by." (how many of us have been there, wondering what happened? was it me? was it her? does it matter? and realizing just another brief chapter without answers had moved by....) And we all know once you've lost her.... she's gone... it's just the way it works out with the ones worth keeping... "and experience robs me of hope that you'll ever call home, so I'm stuck on my own, I'm stuck on my own." Then the rehab lines... "Looks like I'm here with a guy I judge worse than anyone else/ So I pace/ and I pray/ and I repeat the mantras that might keep me clean for the day" "And the churchbells are ringing for those that are easy to please" I won't share my thoughts on this one.. but it's a GREAT line... And experience tells me that I'll never hear them again, without thinking of them... ahhhh the song is just so poetic like most of isbell's songs you don't wanna ruin it by trying to explain it. lol

+Jared Cox : what a beautiful interpretation of this song. Knocked my socks off, your comment and the lyrics and song. Explaining it didn't "ruin it" at all. Helped a lot of people understand it, I'm sure. "Looks like I'm here with a guy I judge worse than anyone else/ So I pace/ and I pray/ and I repeat the mantras that might keep me clean for the day"

In a room by myself…looks like I’m here with a guy that I judge worse than anyone else. That might be my all-time fave Isbell lyric….the whole song is freaking insanely true

Two years after our breakup, and 12 years together, I ran into an old mutual friend. He said Johnny told him on night when they were out at a bar, that it used to piss him off when I hummed and sang when I cleaned house and showered. He said he didn't know why it passed him off. He said he guessed I was in a good mood if I could wash dishes and sing. Then he said he noticed I didn't hum or sing towards the end, but he knows why I stopped and still can't figure out why it bothered him. And, he wonders why his new girlfriend doesn't hum or sing at all😕
