We adopted a little 18 month old from the foster system. Her name is Alyssa. She’s 13 now. I still bawl like a baby when I watch this. This would’ve been my baby if we hadn’t “rescued” her.

Don, my friend, I just now came across this reaction. I will own that every single time that I listen to it I break down. I can totally identify with your anger and desire to strike out at those who would abuse. That's what warriors do. They fight to protect those who are too weak to defend themselves. You mentioned that you have two sisters. I have three grown children - two boys and a daughter. I would fight to the death to protect either one. I can't fathom the mindset that can harm a child with impunity. Jason Carroll's daughter, Savanna, went to school with Alyssa. Alyssa was "different." She was bullied in school and Savanna was her only friend. Alyssa was also being beaten at home by her stepfather. Her mother did nothing to protect the girl. He decided to go to the school to report what was going on, but it was too late. It took Jason three years to write this song. It never seemed to be perfect enough. Right before it was released, he sang it at a concert. He received a letter from a teacher in Georgia who wanted a copy of the song, so she could play it in her class and get their thoughts on it to write in their journals. Two months later, she contacted him and told him that several of her students reported child abuse in their homes. Thanks, Don, for covering this. Too often domestic child abuse is a silent killer. I appreciate your take on this.

@Will Deloach Thanks for the words and perspective on the video and the subject that JMC addressed. I was getting angry all over again just reading your agreement with me on it---I suppose just knowing that someone could even take advantage of a kid (or anyone, for that matter) is where I launch. I'm a seriously chill guy, but this kind of thing is where I'd make up for it. Thanks for faring the way you do, as your daughter will have a safety net around her, whether she knows it or not. And your boys will know how to be around women, including their own children. So kudos to you for having the good qualities that you do living in you.

This video is actually based on two true stories. Story #1 is the story of the song which Jason Michael Carroll wrote the song from, is a young girl who was not saved in time and lost her life to abuse. Story #2 is the story of a teacher who played the song for his classes and ended up having several students come forward and reveal that they were being abused.

Never heard this song but about halfway through, the video got really blurry. After retiring from the military, I started a 2nd career as a counselor. I figured there wasn't much I hadn't seen, whether it was from my childhood, the military, or from all the places I've been. Maybe I could help someone? Let me just say this...there are certain lines that once crossed, there's no going back. Call it evil, karma, sickness...whatever...some people can't be fixed by anyone but their Maker. Maybe that makes me a lousy counselor that gave up too soon, but the things I've seen were beyond horrible. Do I believe in forgiveness and rehabilitation? Yes, to a degree. Am I an advocate for the death penalty? Very much so...
@ritaking2201

David, I know Christine can relate to this. If you have ever held a child with broken wings from head trauma, broken limbs or internal injuries from being abused, you want to kill the devil who did it. But then I would die. Death penalty? Envision a deserted Island surrounded by sharks and inhabited with Lions, Tigers and Bears. Air drop his rear and let him live with fear the rest of his life. A solution maybe?
@davidemswiler4351
@davidemswiler4351 5 жыл бұрын
@@ritaking2201 You have a good heart and a gentle soul for coming up with an alternative solution and I respect and admire that. And you're right, if you make a plan and hunt down the monster yourself, you could be subject to punishment yourself. That would be bad. What I'm suggesting is you say your prayers, grieve for your loss, and then in a very calm and lady-like manner check the box that says "yes" for keeping the death penalty as a legal option. But if one day it does get abolished, I'll be sure to check the box for the island with lions and tigers! :-)

I did have a son and his father was not nice so with his little strength we left that was 28 yrs ago now . I am still a mess mentally so much that I am petrified of relationships. What I guess I am trying to say is please God if you see something say something, be someone's saviour you never know Who's life you could save . Thanks for letting me ramble

It's pretty common that a community knows but just chooses to say and do nothing. The stupid mindset of "that's family business" or "you can't tell ppl how to parent their kids" is usually at fault, or the a-holes who love to tout the 'spare the rod' BS as a reason why it's fine to hit your kids, good even. I grew up in a small rural Oklahoma town..1200 ppl approximately. I found out decades after high school the ENTIRE town knew my mother was nuts and what she did to us. They all knew and not a single knew of them said a word. It made me raging mad.

First time hearing this and, man, it got me. What needs to be said has been said by you, Don, and the other commenters. I would like to say that this song does have one of, what I believe to be, the great lyrical devices used a bit in Country music and that's changing the meaning without changing the words. The fact that "Alyssa lies..." is about her concealing the truth finally becomes "Alyssa lies with Jesus" is very good writing often seen in Country.

I am generally of the mindset that every song can and should be rated. This one, however, is as good of an exception as you will find. Such a beautiful job with the writing and the double meaning of lies. Yet when the story hits you, it hits hard. While it is sad to think of Alyssa, think of how many people her story and this song may have saved over the years. I am also a big fan of Jason's song "Where I'm From" and if you want to go back to your rock roots, check out his song "I Can Sleep When I'm Dead" as it is a very upbeat, hard driving song.

I've watched this video hundreds of times and my heart hurts every single time. He does an amazing job; the lyrics and music; and his own emotion being the topper. I listen to people, just as I did you, as they don't understand and with such a serious topic and the reality of it all being put on blast like that, I get the anger and shock (for lack of a better word) --- I have to say that part of that same reality were teachers who had rulers and vice principles with paddles hanging on their walls, and seeing a father pull the belt off his waist back then was as common as a child with a handheld in device today's society. No excuses, let me clear, but I suppose for me I'm so glad that I think like I do; knowing that it was a different time then, and able to reassure my mom of that prior to her death. We are all a product of our environment/society and those who are enlightened to a different route are fortunate; far too many aren't even aware that any other route exists. Thank you for being you and for your genuine reaction .... There's no way to rate this, you are correct. Love that you are so damn human too btw.

My older brother, Lenny and I SURVIVED our growing up years, with our parents, BEFORE we ESCAPED. Out of seven children our parents had, for whatever reasons, Lenny and I got their abuse. He was, among other things done to him, permanently deafened in one ear, and I was permanently blinded in one eye, which surgery could NOT give me back my sight in that eye ever again. NOT family members, neighbors, school bus drivers, or teachers, who ALL saw the slap marks on our faces, the wounds that were bleeding, the bruises, NOT one of them ever stepped up to help us. IF ANY of you know for a FACT that a child is being abused, PLEASE CARE ENOUGH to report it,PLEASE. wado,Ann Benson.

Alright so I'm a metal head and I usually Express my emotions through that type of music i dont listen to much country or pop but this song hit hard man. I couldn't imagine going through that type of situation and What's worse is that this happens right under our noses and we cant see it till it's too late. I never had that issue I grew up in a healthy family setting but that's why this song and also concrete angel hits me hard cuz what if that was me or someone I care about and didnt know until it was too late.

@Demigod 4165 I hear you about the rock/metal thing, as I came from the same place; But I always had a soft spot for beautiful ballads (think, Lynyrd Skynrd's "Simple Man"), so songs that hit me in the feels also worked for me. When I got into country I found my emotions being taken all over the planet, from laughter to anger to sadness to confusion, but Jason's song got me about as angry as I'm gonna get listening to a song. Thanks for listening to it, and welcome aboard the channel!

You can't watch that video and not get rocked emotionally, kudos for being able to put that emotion into words. I can't remember if you have reacted to any Charlie Daniels, but if you haven't heard "Simple Man" by Charlie Daniels I would love to get your reaction to that song.

My dad told me a story about a little boy he went to school with. He said that they had been playing after school and all of a sudden he seemed scared and ran home. Well the next day he refused to sit down and the teacher forcibly sat him down. My dad said he shot straight up out of his seat and you could see that it opened up wounds on his backside and he was bleeding. They mentioned this to the authorities and the little boy was removed from his home and my dad never saw him again.

Mine tryed killing me.he hit me with a 5 ton farm tractor.i was working infront of it and he started it up and floored the throttle and popped the clutch.the tractor jumped forward and upward and hit my leg and a metal cutting saw i was using.the saw went into my guts and i was slammed into a mdtal lathe.i was pinned there.he shut the tractor off and started to get off.i was screaming and telling him to back up.he just sat there for several minutes then backed up.if it wasn,t for my mom needing his help he would have been dead that day once i got out.i live figuring he,ll try it again one day.

I cannot listen to this song without totally breaking down. It always makes me cry, but it also always makes me pray for those caught in similar situations. Thanks for the good reaction and for the story you shared as well, Don. I'm glad your friend made it through, at least. I have one friend from way back that we never knew it was happening to her. In later years, she changed her last name, because she simply couldn't bear to carry her father's name any longer. Before that, though, she lost both of her sons (from two different men that never even offered to marry her) to court systems that did nothing to help her get through the terrible things she had lived with, but instead just took the boys and gave her something else to beat at her spirit all the time. She later found out that one of the boys died in a house fire, and she still has no idea (she's the same age as me...69) where her older boy ended up, or whether he's still alive. She does know that he ran away from his third foster home. Thankfully, she found the Lord about 25 years ago, now, and has used her many talents and her love and compassion to help others over the years, but the birthdays of her boys are still very hard for her (sigh).
