This movie also holds a special place in my heart. I loved it, when i was a kid. I think what drew me in, was the fact that it's so different than the others.

Same here, I do like Part 8 too but it all ended there for me. It's not as bad a film as some say, it really isn't but it's certainly better than Part 5 (doesn't take much to top that) but not as good as any of the others. I sort of prefer them in their original order of release, except for Part 5 I suppose which would be last and Part 8 just before it.

Toxic waste, melt movies, and gross-out humor were all the rage in the '80s and early '90s. We need to bring that back! 9:15 Also Street Trash. 14:59 Jason doesn't kill kids.

I have great memories of part VIII. My dad took me on opening night as he had previously with part VII. I remember how packed the theater was on opening night for The New Blood. People were setting in the aisle way. People were standing up yelling at Melissa. On the opening night of Jason Takes Manhattan, there were 6 people in the theater. You could definitely tell there was a shift going on in 1989. Part VIII remains comfort food for me, and back in the day, I wore my part VIII shirt proudly to school. Great video, sir.

Definitely a shift happening by '89 overall in popular culture, the glorious '80s were dying and pretty much over at this point I recall feeling it that year nothing was quite the same anymore with the odd scent of the '90s somehow already beginning in music, TV and movies.

This is one of the best videos I’ve seen on this film. Part 8 is my favorite, and, while I acknowledge that may be because it’s the first on I ever watched, I still go up to bat for it. Firstly, it’s aesthetics are awesome, it has some of the best kills, Julius is arguably the most badass character in the franchise (after Tommy), and the bulk of the movie taking place on a cruise ship is actually a pretty solid setting. The fact that the last 40(ish) minutes take place in Manhattan is like the cherry on top, honestly. Either way, I just never understood why this movie gets so much hate. Great video!

The whole movie really does sort of feel like the end of an era. The kid in the beginning telling his woman about Camp Crystal Lake, and then dismissing it as "They're just stories" makes it feel like the events of the original film was some urban legend from the 50's, instead of something that wasn't even ten years old at that point. And the film doing away with the standard opening credits of white letters on a black background, and using that song makes it feel so much more modern (by those standards at least). I first saw this one when I was 12 years old, in the mid 1990's. And back then, before people on the internet started to slander it, this movie was almost mythical in a way. When you wanted to brag to people about how you rented or watched some scary movie, someone inevitably one-upped you by saying they watched Jason Takes Manhattan.

I remember when Jason Takes Manhattan first released back in 1989 the promotion for this movie was huge, Kane even appeared as a guest on the Arsenio Hall as Jason in full make up and didn’t say a word. Very cool time to be a Friday Fan. But then to think only 3 years later Jason was sold to Newline, its wild

It wouldn’t have been as marketable but I’ve always felt the film woulda been received better if it was advertised as taking place on a ship and then it being a surprise for the audience that they do in fact make it to New York. Friday the 13th: Burial At Sea.

Honestly the late 80s era of Friday the 13th is the best, it was like at that point they just wanted to make them fun to watch and I adore Jason Lives, the new blood and Jason Takes Manhattan. They are the most entertaining ones of the series especially a new beginning and re-watching that one this year, I had a blast and that one makes me laugh lol.

To me this is more or less the end of the series. The Paramount era is Friday the 13th as far as I'm concerned, and this is the final chapter of that era. The new line ones are the Jason movies and the remake is just its own thing. 8 movies in 10 years was one hell of a ride and I would like to see some sort of legacy sequel to the Paramount era one day.

It's a shame that so many people hate on this film like they do! It's refreshing to find a review from someone else that enjoys it...just like I do! I feel like there are pros and cons to all of these films, but they are nostalgic to me. After Part 8 and after Paramount, this series changed. I'll gladly watch these over later entries in the series!

My main complaint is Jason "teleporting" around the ship and in NY was the worst in the entire series. I mean in the franchise he was always in the right place at the right time to kill somebody but here it was more implausible how it was done. Its not enough to make me hate the move though. My only other complaint is they kill off the rocker chick way too early. She shows up and in the next scene shes in its her death scene. They could have done more with that character imo.

As I've said before, this was just what happened to the Halloween franchise...they began trying to fix something that wasn't broken. The audience was still there...they should have simply kept on making movies for that audience. You can't please everybody...but you could keep your true fans, just by making new, quality variations on the same theme...

The problem with this film is they still could have made a Jason in New York movie even with the budget they had. The mistake they made was thinking fans need to see Jason in every major New York area. That isnt really what fans want while that would be fun all they needed to do was have Jason in a city setting killing people which you could have done even with the budget they had. They should have used Vancouver in the place for most of New York and had scenes of Jason killing an entire police station and killing entire Broadway plays or massacring a subway full of people. The problem here is lack of creativity from the director you still could have made a Jason Takes New York movie with the budget they had but they didn't get how to execute it. Maniac Cop 2 takes place in New York had a similar or lower budget and still made a good New York slasher.

Something I hadn’t thought about until the last time I watched this…The cruise ship is flagged as a Panamanian vessel. During filming of F13 part 8, the U.S. was involved in efforts to oust Panama’s dictator, Manuel Noriega, who had a long running involvement with the South American drug trade. Could the graduation cruise been just a cover for the boat’s crew to move a few hundred kilos to NYC? If so, Jason was doing his part to fight the war on drugs (we already saw how anti drug he is when he killed the mugger with the needle). Kinda fits the latter narrative that Jason was a right wing superhero.

I always say that VIII was the book end of the franchise. Mo jason going to hell or fighting freddy. From VIII to IX there's no continuity, so in my person belief Jason truly died in the sewers for good. In terms of the actual movie, they had awesome ideas but the budget dwindled down once filming took off apparently.

Its one of the worst of the Paramount 8 but this movie gets way more hate than it deserves. The fact that they didnt get to film where they wanted was a blessing in disguise and is why the New York gimick actually works - because it kept everything grounded. I didnt need to see Jason do boxing in Madison Square Garden. Way better and way more sympatico to Friday the 13th to have him box on top of an empty building.

So funny….. based on how old you are, you get exposed to these flicks differently…… this one was a mid 90s, VHS, video rental find…. Cable movie channels constantly featured the first 5….. 6 and 7 in occasion….. guess cause it came out in 89, you wouldn’t be able to watch in on TV in the early 90s….

End of the era is just another way of saying end of the decade…1980 through 1989. The original Friday the 13th opened up in 1980 and Jason Takes Manhattan in 1989. All of the Jason films in the era, err, the decade, Paramount owned. I personally think Paramount should have never sold the franchise, they should have ended it with this one. I think I’ll even go out of my way and say that the final Freddy movie should have ended with The Dream Child, released the same year as Jason Takes Manhattan. Kill of two of the biggest slasher icons of the 80s in the 80s in the last year of the 80s. It would have been perfect.
