DCAU Tim Drake has almost all of Jason Todd’s comic book backstory, from his origin to his “death.” I always thought Jason would be a redundant character, unless they gave him a “darker” version of Tim Drake’s origin. I’ve joked the Tim Drake in the comics was a fanboy stalker who gained his wish to become part of his hero’s world. I would’ve been fine with the DCAU version of Todd being a fanboy stalker that Batman had rightly rejected, even though he’d discovered his identity. (He perhaps could tell from the start that Todd was unstable.) You could get a Red Hood that way without his having actually been a Robin.

I'm going to say that while I don't think this version of Jason needed to be Robin, the story could've worked if they had given HIM another identity to be honest. I also don't like the continuing idea that Jason as Robin, needs to be so angry and undeserving of the role. It just robes the situation of it the tragedy of losing such a young boy. It's something that the comics did as well after his death. With characters for years going on about how this poor dead kid was the wrong sort for the job, and how Bruce should've known that the boy wasn't like Dick or Tim, he didn't have what it took and hadn't any real morals. It's very... unnerving to read through even now. That the kid is basically inverse pedestalled like this. Even the sequence of his death get retcon to fit the narrative. When the death wasn't an example of negative traits he had, but of positive ones. Batman had taught some street kid, mad at the world, to trust people. And that was what got him killed. But now it has to be a negative trait that got Jason killed, it has to be his fault because he didn't listen to Batman... sigh... Well, at least it wasn't what Jim Starlin wanted to kill him with at first... AIDs. At least I've not have to read dozens of comics blame the poor kid for getting AIDs.

Comic book writers are better at writing stereotypes and archetypes than the almighty comic book accuracy. Half the time I wonder: Do the fans even care? Nowadays the second Robin is a sadist, Batman is insane and Harley Quinn is basically the Deadpool. Madness. Madness and stupidity.
@deterlanglytone4 жыл бұрын
@@erikthomsen4768 Actually Jason hasn't been a sadist since the Morrison run before the Nu52. It's his time as Robin that bothers me, if you look back at his stories... even in-universe his anger and aggression were two things. New and only targeted at people who hurt kids, hurt women, or were either battering pimps or serial rapists. But that's... not how it's portrayed in comics later on. The context is just ignored to pretend that the character was always warped compared to Batman. Not saying that children cartoons should have rape and child murder in them. Just pointing out that Jason's behavior was both new and with context.

George Burns was usually the Straightman in the comedy routine. So, asking someone to say Goodnight, Gracie is the straightman’s job. It could just be a reference to the fact that George Burns was the straightman to Gracie Allen. Therefore the straightman in the routine was always the one who said, “Say Goodnight, Gracie.” The reference doesn’t have to be mis-remembered because the straightman in that comedy team would say that line. I’ve worded this far too repetitively.
@dcauwatchtower4 жыл бұрын

Especially when none of the creators seems to be taking its canonicity half as seriously as you fine fellows do? I say this as a fan of your videos and your obvious love of the DCAU source material. Could it is also be a reference to Pennywise from It, and the actor who originated the role on screen? If so, it would be a fun snake-eats-its-tail kind of reference because the first on-screen version of Pennywise was played by Tim Curry, who, based on that performance, was originally cast to play the BTAS Joker before he had to bow out and Mark Hamill was cast. Between this and the Robin pose he used earlier, I think it's safe to say that Ty owns a copy of it, or one of the other other DC/Landoll's coloring books that recycled those pages. And at this point, I think it's safe to say that the Lost Years comic is truly well out of continuity for the purposes of this series, as are any BTAS/DCAU comics not previously worked on by Dini, Burnett, or Templeton.

And honestly, isn't this MORE fun for you guys, having these conundrums to try and work out & reconcile? It'd be kind of boring if you just read these and were like, "Hey, this all fits perfectly with every bit of the fanon we worked out for ourselves!" :)

Dude, nice video. But let me tell you why he has that suit that you referred to as the "TNBA suit" from the very beginning - the one that's shown in Jason Todd's bedroom. DC is streamlining the DCU comic-book continuity into the DCAU continuity, so the Batman's Year One suit from the comics is a suit that he also wore in the DCAU continuity now as well, because they are streamlining the DCU continuity into the DCAU continuity, so that people get more aware of the continuity in the comics, so that the DCAU continuity has everything that the DCU comic-book continuity has, and that's a very smart thing that they're doing, they are doing it so that more people will be familiar with Batman Comics and would then read Batman comics, so that people don't wonder why the DCAU doesn't have DCU continuity, so streamlining DCU comic-book continuity into the DCAU continuity is the best idea - So that everyone knows these stories, and so that everything that happened in the comics, is now retrofitted into the DCAU continuity, and that's great, especially for people who read Batman comics. I can't wait till Damian Wayne get's added, Cassandra Cain, and so on. Azrael and Deathstroke are already there, and that's great. The DCAU, for a long time, was missing these characters, and whenever you spoke to DCAU fans about these characters, they wouldn't know them, so now, atleast the DCAU fans who don't read Batman Comics, are now fully aware of these characters. It's called "streamlining", and it's an excellent idea.

Idk why they put Jason into the Btas canon when they basically made tim a stand in for jason in the show. instead of being a smart detective even better than batman, he's just a kid on the streets. Idk, it always bothered me even tho I like the red hood

I feel like jason has to be a robin for the red hood story to ever work because him and batman need that connection. But because tim drake from the DCAU is like a combination of tim drake and jason from the comics his origin does feel really similar here and if jason dies at the jokers hand why would batman ever let another robin get kidnapped and tortured by the joker ?. I think this entire series is better to be thought of as an alternate DCAU as the plot holes seem to be huge I do like jason and this series so far but it just doesnt make sense.

If you do the math in the pre new 52, Jason finally goes back to Bruce FOUR years after his death, in Batman hush, Jason is already out of the Lazarus put and working with hush

Batman 428 came out in December 1988 and Batman 457 (first appearance of new Robin costume) was December 1990. I love that we get to be geeks on this channel! Anyway, Tim himself showed up earlier. I would say that the timeline in the comics was all over the place and probably impossible to put into a realistic timeline, sort of like BTAS itself.

What's fucked is the only reason we never got Jason is cause TAS didn't wanna be the one to touch that. Also they thought it'd be to dark to cover his death and no one had brought him back as red hood or suggested it til the teen titans. Though the show was dark enough would've loved to see them cover it

As a gun nerd I will say that Jason's gun seem MUCH more likely to be some in universe version of a Colt M1911 since you can see the "slab side" slide, the grip safety at the rear of the grip as well as the style of hammer and spur. Not a perfect replica but much closer to that than a CZ75

Thanks for the video, guys! You guys are so thorough that it's mind boggling to me. I keep watching these videos and thinking the following phrases: "Wow! I would have never noticed that detail! and "Oh, I didn't think that detail was worth pointing out, but better safe than sorry!" as well as "This gonna give James an aneurysm or seven." Here are my comments regarding the rest of the video. 1 On the Batsuit costume conundrum, there is a very simple solution to this problem. Batman has multiple suits on hand as well as multiple belt variants to go with them. That way if Batman is using a suit that shouldn't really be seen in that time frame or a suit with a different belt design than what he normally has, you can just say, "Oh, he just a different suit than he normally does for that particular mission." Also, to add to the headaches you guys will be having, I found this reddit page of the TNBA era Batman from the episode The Demon Reborn that showcased a point during the episode in which Batman looks like he's in his Justice League costume: www.reddit.com/r/DCAU/comments/i4tnll/this_bit_from_the_demon_reborn_makes_batman_look/ 2 On the subject of whether or not Jason Todd should have been an "almost Robin" instead of an actual Robin, I know it messes up continuity a bit; but I'm glad Jason is going to be an actual Robin in the DCAU. The emotional resonance wouldn't be quite as strong if Jason Todd was never an actual Robin. There's also the risk of making it look like your slighting Jason whether intentionally or not. For years, Jason Todd was blamed for his own death in the comics. Here are some links that showcase a lot of the victim blaming in the comics: fuckyeahjasontodd.tumblr.com/post/1999047334/whos-to-blame-how-jason-todd-is-blamed-for-his fuckyeahjasontodd.tumblr.com/post/2060221472/whos-to-blame-how-jason-todd-is-blamed-for-his scans-daily.dreamwidth.org/2821274.html (This is the same essay just posted onto one page, but it was updated and added with a few more elements and scenes) Also, Jason being an actual Robin who did die between the events of BTAS and TNBA would also help explain why Bruce's default emotion during the TNBA era is grumpiness. 3 On the subject of tie-in material, I really think you guys should largely drop the other DCAU tie-in comics from any timelines you will make in the future. This comic is really just doing what the people behind the DCAU were doing back in their heyday. Ignoring tie-in issues to tell the stories they want to tell. Here are the following examples: Superman's first encounter with Batman in the tie-in comics was ignored for STAS just a few years after it came out. Adventures in the DC Universe was pretty much completely overwritten for the Justice League cartoon. Huntress' appearance in the Batman Adventures was ignored for Justice League. Alfred not having a cane during the events of Starcrossed is also something that goes against The Batman Adventures. They were trying to show Alfred getting up there in age, but in Starcrossed Alfred does not have a cane or mobility problems whatsoever. Heck, Alfred looks just like he does during the TNBA era just with updated animation. When it comes to tie-in material for the DCAU, I don't really consider them canon unless you have a person behind it who was fundamental in forming the DCAU like Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, and Alan Burnett. Also, if they were involved in tie-in you should be aware of the possibility of being overwritten by future material they were involved. Case in point, Brcue Timm and Paul Dini were involved in the first Annual of The Batman Adventures in which Roxy Rocket first appeared. However, the TNBA episode The Ultimate Thrill completely overwrote the events of that episode. Another example would be this comic itself seemingly disregarding the events of the Gotham Girls webseries due to the fate of Nora in this comic. The people behind the DCAU may take elements from the tie-ins, but they always do their own spin on them. 4 Okay, this last bit has nothing to do with this comic series, but there are some questions about a moment in the BTAS episode Harlequinade that seem to be largely ignored. First the KZbin clip with relevant portion: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y2HVaZ2OhbuGh8k Look at around the first fifth-teen seconds of this video, Harley Quinn uses a gadget she apparently found in the Batmobile's glove compartment to restrain Batman and Robin. My questions are the following: A. What's the name of this gadget? B. What's the name of the restraints Harley Quinn fired at Batman and Robin? I think she fired a Bola at Robin, but I can't tell what she fired at Batman. It's some weird crescent moon shaped restraints. C. Did this gadget ever appear anywhere else in the DCAU or DCAU tie-in material? Also, depending on your answer, why or why not?
