Hello From Kentucky. Recently I purchased a 8N Ford which is probably between a 1950-1952 8N because of the side mounted distributor. After I got the tractor home, I noticed that my tractor had the Sherman transmission with the same identical shifter as the one in your video. I was so glad that I found this video because a sizable number of people have no clue what a Sherman transmission is let alone the shifting characteristics. The 8N Ford that I purchased had a Woods RM306 finish mower thrown into the deal for $1200 for both the tractor and mower which I found just 2-3 miles up the road from where I live from someone that I know. I’m not sure if he knew about the Sherman transmission because he never mentioned it to me when I went to look at the tractor. They delivered the tractor to me, So I didn’t have to worry with any delivery charges. So far as luck would have it, the weather has been crappy and so I haven’t been able to really drive the tractor that much. I never realized the process of installing a Sherman transmission was so complicated and labor intensive, But I am elated that my tractor has the Sherman transmission.

@TheIronDuke502 Well, congratulations!! You are fortunate to already have one! I hope it is in good shape for you, shifts well ,and doesn't make any noise. I personally will not mess with them anymore. This rebuild was expensive and honestly other then road gear I see them kind of pointless. To me they still don't slow the tractor down enough especially in reverse. Also it slows the pto speed down too. They are fast though! I hope you get to enjoy your tractor soon!

I really like your boat trailer jacks idea. When I split my Ferguson 35 I used a 4-wheel mover dolly stacked with lumber to get the height. Got the job done less elegantly. For speedy utility tractors you need to make sure the steering box, vertical wheel shaft bearings, front wheel bearings, and all steering linkages are tight or the tractor will wander dangerously as the speed goes up.

Thanks for the compliment. Yes steering components are very important. This particular one has had some work done and is tight as the day it was made. Plus the whole rear end,axle seals,brake shoes,hubs are all new. Stops perfectly. I can go down the road in high range and take my hands off the wheel and it still goes straight.

Thank you so much for the kind words. Unfortunately I think repair videos aren't the greatest thing to have as far as grabbing subscribers. People generally come across the videos when looking for help then once they get the help they move on. Also a lot of the successful channels are popular because of the people or person doing it. Some individuals just have that likeable thing that people are drawn to. Plus I only make a few videos a year and that definitely hurts. Thing to remember is it not only slows tire speed it also slows PTO speed as well so tiller Speed slows too.. Generally speaking the N series is not a good candidate for a tiller..

I’m not sure. On the trans case is marked H N. L. After seeing your video I have a little more knowledge as to what I’m looking at. Tomorrow we’re going to look at an old Ford pickup. I’m going to try to talk her out of it till she gets some other projects caught up. She has the tractor, a ‘66 Jeep CJ 5 half tore apart, and a ‘72 Starcraft boat half tore apart. I think it might be time for me to say NO.

Great video, but I have become a fan lately. I'm not a tractor owner, however I do have an early Ford flathead V8 car, and have worked on the motor and transmission, and so many of the components looked very familiar to me. May I suggest that all machined mating surfaces and threads need to be cleaned before reassembly, especially if you are shimming too obtain a critical clearance. Also I would advise using a Loctite product on all threads and torquing critical bolts on the Sherman transmission. Regarding an oil change, I am not sure if the top of the Sherman can be removed in situ, if so, then the old oil could be sucked out from the top is required. Just a thought. Keep up the good work !!

I love the old flat head V8s !! All threads and mating surfaces were cleaned. I also did put Loctite on some of the bolts. When making these videos it's hard trying to make them as short as possible yet informative. A lot gets edited out. I have people tell me all the time I talk to much. 🤣

The oil gets circulated in and out from the tractors main transmission. If you keep up with the oil changes regularly and it doesn't get contaminated your only leaving a quart or so behind. Out of 5 gallon that's nothing. Thanks for watching.

I noticed on one of my Sherman hi/lo tractors someone drilled a hole on the bottom of the bell housing to get to the Sherman drain plug.

Just curious as to how big the hole is? It would need to be rather large or you could accidentally drop the plug and have it stuck in the the bell housing. Also if you'd drain it and oil wouldn't exit the bell housing you could get oil on the clutch possibly especially if the weep hole is clogged. Any hole too big I'd fear would drastically effect the strength of the tractor. Too me personally if you keep up with frequent oil changes that little bit of oil that fills the Sherman would be nothing to worry about. It will eventually get mixed in with all the new gear oil. Another point to ponder. What if that hole was created to spray something on the clutch that got stuck at one time?

Jason. Thanks for the great video. Im repacing the clutch in my 2N. The clutch is oily. The front chamber for the flywheel is oily and i think i need to replace the rear main seal. But the housing for my Sherman is also very oily. Do you think the oil is leaking in the Sherman and also possibly from the transmission where the Sherman bolts on. I dont want to get oil on my new clutch. Thanks.

More then likely it's the seal on the input shaft of the Sherman that is the issue. It could leak where the gasket where the Sherman and the tractor meet BUT that oil should go straight down and out the weep oil if it gets too bad. Should stay off the clutch. Your rear main seal should do the same if that weep hole is open as well closer to flywheel. When that input seal leaks the oil will travel down the shaft right on to the clutch. If the other two are leaking it should just drain out. Hope that makes sense.

My family had a Ford 2n or 9n with a Sherman for quite a few years, and I considered it "my" tractor. Were all Shermans like the one in your video, in that the shift lever had an in and out position, plus forward and and back positions? If so, there were two positions that we never knew existed ! !

There were different kinds. Most popular for the 9N and 2Ns were the Step Up ONLY Shermans. They don't shift like the one in the video. There was also one that was only shift down but they are very rare. There was even one that was used on tractors that had forklifts on it. It would give you sever speeds in reverse.

As I split it again the clutch plate had slipped a little & wouldn’t let the shaft into the pilot because I tried the alignment tool and it wouldn’t slide in. Next time I tightened the pressure plate evenly and made sure the tool would slide all along through the process. So it is back in the pilot now everything looks good peddle goes down a lot further. I guess it’s in the adjustment now. Going try and adjust it tomorrow.

Well I split it again ,three times. This time I’m going to adjust the fingers on the pp. they aren’t being pressed. Seems it isn’t touching the fingers. I’m gona try and tighten them down some to pull the fingers up. Do you know of an easy way to do this , some say 060 not sure where or what to measure. Thanks again.

I would not recommend a new one. As in my video I was not able to use them. Long story short they are not made very well. Best to find a used one but good luck. Hard to find one in good usable condition.

If I couldn't find an 8N with Sherman but a nice original 54 (Jubilee I think they are called.) Is there anything I should know about them that isn't good and should I just stick with an 8N?

If it is a 54 it would be known as a model NAA . The Golden Jubilee is a NAA but in 1953 (Fords 50th Anniversary) the NAA is referred to a Golden Jubilee. The only thing different about a 1953 is the emblem that says Golden Jubilee. They are a big improvement over the 8N. First is the overhead valve engine, better hydraulics ,etc.

8N hood removal: if you're 6'6" with long arms you can pull it off by hand from the side. One hand under the lip below the dash and the other hand under the front above the grille. Ask me how I know. Removed several that way. But, if you have a hoist, use it!

I've seen people remove them by hand and I cringe. The radiator neck takes a beating especially when going back on. Probably why so many are bent. The fuel bowl is naturally at risk of getting beat up as well. Then things such as fuel line or headlight wires can easily be forgotten to get disconnected can be damaged. With the lift I just go a little at a time and watching everything and being gentle. My hat is off to you for being able to even lift a hood by yourself. I physically could not do it plus I wouldn't even try. My back hurts enough as it is. Before my dad and I would remove them by one of us on each side. We don't even mess around anymore. Takes a few minutes to get the hoist out to save us and the tractor.

Yes you have a low and a Hi range with this particular transmission. So normally the tractor would have 4 forward gears and one reverse. You still can use the same gearing (stock) with leaving the Sherman in "Standard" range, but you can have higher gearing and lower. Now the tractor has 12 forward speeds and 3 reverse.

Thanks! This particular one will not fit your 600,but they have Sherman transmissions for them. The difference is in the input shaft. The N series are 10 spline. Yours is 15 spline.

Thanks Harry!! No spring to assist in shifting. The only springs that are used are the detent springs/balls and they just keep the shifter from popping out of gear.

This is a very dumb question from a guy that has wanted one of these tractors for 20 years and I am now able to purchase one and so I am reviewing all the current information I can: Why couldn't you drill a hole directly below the Sherman drain plug that would fit a larger drain plug allowing you access to the Sherman drain plug and the ability to plug the access hole? Am I making sense here?

Hi! Yes this question comes up often. Some things to consider are 1) The hole you would need to drill in the tractor to have access to the plug of the Sherman would need to be fairly large to make sure the oil that's being drained exits completely or it could touch the flywheel and get flung all over the clutch. 2) drilling yet another hole even larger then the one for the shifter lever could possibly have a effect on the strength of the casting. 3) You could put a pipe up in there and have it exit the bottom with a cap on it BUT with the tractor so low to the ground it wouldn't take much to break the pipe off one something. The Sherman doesn't really hold that much oil. Even if that oil is nasty it would be diluted fairly good in the fresh 5 gallons of the main transmission. Another thing is if you'd drain the Sherman empty there is no way to add new oil to it. Oil would need to work its way in there with the oil slinger and that could take a while of driving for that to happen. The Sherman would be turning for a while with little to no oil for a while.

@born2soon No, especially with all new bearings. Tolerances change. Plus this transmission came out of another tractor. I didn't do that so had no idea was in it. Had to start from scratch.

If you keep up with transmission oil changes the little bit that stays in there will hurt nothing. It gets oil from the main transmission there is continually flow of oil going in and out. If you had a hole you wouldn't want it very big because it may start to crack the bell housing. If you had it small just enough the oil would still probably go everywhere before it would go out the hole. Like on you clutch. And if you would drop the plug on the inside good luck getting it out.

A sherman transmission is great in an 8n if you're going to use it for baling hay. Of course an 8n is a little small to pull a baler but they do ok if you are on fairly level ground. I have baled with one but 1st gear is a little fast. Low range in the sherman solves that problem.

I'm gonna politely disagree. As much as In love the Ford N series they are not a good choice for doing hay. Other then raking of course. Too fast even with a Sherman. The Sherman really only slows you down a couple mph. It helps,but it is not a solution to the problem.

@@Jason1Pa You are right. I would never buy an 8n for baling hay but I have been in a situation where I had to bale with an 8n. I installed a shermaqn transmission in a NAA Jubilee years ago and was thinking it slowed it down more. It has been so long ago I really don't remember.

@@trailrider0194 Well a Jubilee is slightly geared slower then a 8N. Especially in Reverse. Reverse in a 8N is insane. I can't remember the gear ratio but it is almost exactly the same as 3rd gear.

I never understood why they never had a way to drain the oil out of it. Somethings to consider would be the hole would need to be fairly large to get easy access to the plug. If you wouldn't be able to grab the plug with your fingers and would drop the plug either getting it in or out it would get lost in there. I guess you could have a small pipe coming threw with a cab. I'd be worried that it would get broke off. Also if it were drained out completely you can't get oil back into it and it takes a while for the oil to find its way in. You'd be running low for a while.

I don't have a in depth video unfortunately however here are a couple things. You can check. Grab the PTO shaft (tractor off of course and override clutch off) and see if there is any in and out movement. There really shouldn't be any. If there is there could be a bad snap ring,bearing, etc, damaged causing that slop and creating it to jump out of gear. There is also a small spring and ball (detent ball) in the bearing coupler. That is what your PTO lever hooks up too. If that spring or ball is damaged it will be weak and cause it to jump out of gear. Here is a video of the bearing coupler if your not familiar. Hi Jason boy I really felt your pain when you realized that nice new shiny input shaft wasn’t going to work I hope you get your money back! Were you able to actually see any thing that was different from the old gears compared to the new shaft? And I want to request something if you can find someone to work the camera for us . Could you give a demonstration how low or how slow you go at about 1500 RPM in the lowest gear I would really appreciate it but if you don’t want to don’t worry about it! Hi Keith! I actually did record the difference in speed,but decided to edit it out. One reason is to keep the video length down,but there is no noticeable difference. I'm very disappointed to be honest. According to GPS there is only about 1 mph difference in low range vs. standard. Granite I only did the test at idle and in reverse. One of my main reasons for all of this was to slow the insane reverse speed,but like I said there is not a big difference. In high range it's almost too high. Going down the road it needs to be wide open the whole time or it starts to bog the engine down. I'm going to test it some more just to see if it will even pull the slightest of hills.

The new shaft was exactly identical except for the teeth. The very tip of the teeth on the new shaft came to a point. Where as the original has about 1/16 flat area. I raised a question before I saw it but decided to try. I even wonder if the teeth are at a very slightly different angle? I don't know,but I do know it sounded terrible just rotating it by hand. Unfortunately I was 4 days past the return policy for the shaft. I now have a expensive paperweight/conversation piece to keep on my desk. 😆

@@keithwarkentin Oh yeah there are always losses in every project. Just move on. Anymore the moment you buy tires or rebuild a engine your at a loss if you'd want to sell it. You'd never get your money back. I never sell, I just enjoy the hobby. Yes the jacks seem to be a big hit. They sure make it easier and safer.

@@Jason1Pa in guessing you checked it, but is the overall OD of the output gear identical to the OEM gear? It may have been that it just needed a little time in a chuck with a file or some emery paper. Being the project is buttoned upon sure we'll never know, but in the off chance you ever have it out again... 😉 Great video all around. Thanx for sharing!

Tractor Supply. It is their trailer mover. Has a gooseneck ball on top and a receiver on the bottom for whatever kind of hitch you want to use

If you keep up with the maintenance on oil changes leaving that little bit of oil in the transmission is no big deal. If you were to drain it out there is no way to fill it with fresh oil. Then you would need to rely on the oil slinger to get oil back into the Sherman from the main transmission. That could take a little while to get full and I wouldn't want to run it around with little to no oil until it would fill up. Also the hole you'd need to make would need to be rather large to make sure the oil draining out wouldn't make a mess and get inside the bell housing and possibly getting on the clutch. Getting the Sherman's plug back in would be interesting working through a small hole in the bell housing. And if you'd drop it, it would lay inside the bell housing with no way to retrieve it. If you'd make the hole too big to eliminate these issues I'd be concerned if possibly having cracks develop later on.

That was really interesting to watch. I had no idea there was a secondary transmission available. Ive mentioned before the high reverse gear in my 8N makes it unpleasant to work with. I hope to do a full restoration on it in the next year or so. Nothing wrong with being picky. Ive fell down the rabbit hole before on projects. It sucks but in the long run its satisfying. Shows a lot about character and workmanship holding a higher standard. Any tips for finding a Sherman for mine?

It is a pretty fascinating thing if you stop and think about it. As far as finding one they are out there especially if you post a want add someplace. The problem is there is a lot of junk ones out there. They arn't cheap and to get into a full blown out rebuild can be frustrating and expensive. Especially finding parts that are no longer available. You'd almost need to but several and use parts to make one good. I'm gonna be honest. I was very disappointed to find out that low range only slowed down the reverse about 1 mph at idle according to GPS. You can hardly feel the difference. As far as high range I'm going to do dome more test runs with it,but right now it may be too high of a gear for the little 4 cylinder flathead. I'm wondering if the slightest of hills will bog it down too much that it will be almost useless? You'd never be able to pull anything that is for sure. Tractor only. So basically if a tractor doesn't already have one that is in tip top shape I'd never go threw the expense of putting one in again. I don't feel I gained a whole lot.

@@Jason1Pa we had a Jubilee when I was a kid and a few years ago I had a 1964 2000 series which is basically a blue Jubilee and I dont recall ever having that fast of reverse gear. The hydraulics were way better with the engine driven pump.

@@GuntersGarage If I remember correctly the Jubilee has a different counter shaft so the reverse is probably slower. Some things are the same on a 8N somethings are different vs. Jubilee. I believe the rear ends are the same,but swapping transmissions between the two won't work.

There was a Sherman Live PTO conversion however they are extremely rare. I've never seen one or know anyone that has one. As far as making the lift arms live hydraulic no. Some people will put a external pump that runs off the crankshaft and a loader or rear remote can be used. Pretty hard to do that and make it look nice and neat. Most look like hack jobs.

@@Jason1Pa The big disadvantage to the crank driven auxiliary pump is that it's constantly robbing horsepower on a tractor that doesn't have much to work with already.

The radiator is a Sparex brand replacment. They are the only ones I'll use on a Ford. Very good quality and fit like the originals. Also has 4 rows of cooling tubes like the originals. Most replacements have only 3. The 8Ns came with 4 bladed fans. The 9N and 2Ns had 6 blades. I don't see an advantage using 6 as far as cooling goes. As long as you have a clean radiator and up to par cooling system you will be fine. It is very hard to over heat these engines. A 4 blade wouldn't weigh as much. Would probably be less stress on the water pump. To me the 6 blades make a little more air noise as well.

@@davidshipulski4532 Yes Just8ns,Dennis Carpenter,Fix that Ford.com sell the Sparex brand. They are also known as "Restoration Quality" ones. Anymore I just replace my radiators if possible. You can buy them from someone parting out a tractor. I save them from other projects. You can also buy shim stock and make your own. That can get expensive though.

I realize an N series isn't a power house. What are the chances of one of these transmissions holding up behind the engine of an M or super MD Farmall????? Would it be a waste of machining time to put one of these in a big Farmall? I'd love to have an over / under drive for an M , super MD. If anyone has better options I'm open for suggestions. M&W stuff has gotten way too pricey, as well as too scarce.

@@coburnlowman I don't want to sound like a Negative Nancy, but there is no way a Sherman is going to match up to a M in anyway. The input shaft is way to small and short. The output shaft is designed to mesh with the helical cut gear inside the Fords transmission and a Ms are straight cut gears. The little Sherman would be lost inside the bell housing of a M. How would you mount it to the front of a M transmission there are no holes or a flat enough mounting surface to even to begin using some kind of a adapter plate. The belly pump would have to go as well. To answer your question though No I don't think a Sherman is going to handle double the amount of horsepower for what it was designed for especially if you were working it. To be honest I feel there are some weak points to it that aren't strong enough even for the Fords.

@@Jason1Pa I would simply build mounts inside the M bell housing to hold the Sherman. Would mate the output with the input M shaft. I have a good machine shop. Have been thinking about using a Saganaw 3speed box and re cutting all the gears for this purpose. Like out of an 60-80's pickup to go the bell housing. I just know were a couple of Shermans are for a decent price. As far as the belly pumps , I've already dumped them. I've made wide front axles. I put the axles below the frame as well , and dumped the M front steering thingy. That way I drive a modern pump off the crankshaft. It allows a mddern loader to be ran or whatever. Use a truck steering sector mounted below the gas tank. I wanna do a Cummins 4B swap and the extra Over Under gearing should have enough power that it'll do everything I'll ever need at just over idle throttle. Save major on fuel. I found a 4B with built in industrial governor. Also have a black diesel homemade setup in the back of the barn that I Usta run old 6.9 and 7.3 International Harvesters on. Still run a couple of smaller tractors on it. Wrote this without my glasses. If typos. I couldn't see what I was writing

@@kennyc8823 I've never heard of anything modern to give you live PTO. Live hydraulics are possible but you need a external pump such. The Sherman Live PTO is extremely rare and almost possible to find. What would you be doing for the need of Live PTO so much? Just curious.

@@kennyc8823 The problem is the speed with reverse even with a Sherman it will be too fast. I understand you'd be able to stop and let it catch up but you'll be constantly clutching. Unless you have a sentimental attachment to the tractor get rid of it and upgrade. It will be so much easier. Just my 2 cents.

Milky oil is moisture in the oil. More then likely your input shaft transmission seal is leaking. Transmissions are prone to get condensation in them. If you'd have that much milky oil leaking out of the engine then there are more issues then just a leaking crankshaft seal.

Have you considered doing a Flat head V8 conversion next? I think there is an easy one out there. Would be interesting to see how much better the classics can be than the more modern tractors😁

Yes I have been studying V8 builds for years. There are kits available however I do not care for them. The main reason is the hood would need raised and lengthened. The kits give you a piece to bolt to the dash to do that,but I do not care for the look. I would prefer to use a 60 hp flathead conversion where the engine is small enough you can use the original hood and no modifications need to be done to it. It's kind of hard to find a 60 hp one through. I haven't really looked real hard though. It would take the right tractor too. If I'd find one that the original engine was completely junk but the rest of the tractor had good bones I'd attempt it.

Just to give you a wide range of gear ratios. You can now go slower and faster then the original transmission. The tractor started out at 4 forward speeds and one reverse. Now it has 12 forward speeds and 3 reverse speeds

Man, wish I had a lower gear than 1st Gear on my 8N! Fords 1st Gear is too Fast!! Cannot Work all the Hand Controls to do a Good Job!!! A Lower/Slower Gear/Speed would be Great.

Sadly the Shermans still don't slow it down enough. It's only about 1 mph difference when low range according to GPS. It's hardly noticeable. I got it mainly to go faster down the road. I never have a issue with 1st gear but reverse is crazy in most situations.
