I know EXACTLY what you meant when you said you got goose bumps. About 20 years ago, I was in Keokuk, Iowa by the lock and dam. There is a swing bridge there, but the bridge was set for trains, not barges. It was well after dark, and I saw a train coming from Illinois side, so I decided to sit there and watch it as it crossed. At about the halfway point across the river, I noticed the location of the number boards and other lights, and thought, "This doesn't look like any GP or SD units I know." As it got nearer, my memory kicked in, and I realized that it had to be an F unit of some sort. I grew up in Hayfield, MN in the 60's, where the Chicago Great Western had a fairly busy yard for a town of under 900 people. The CGW was VERY heavy in F7's and RS2's. I had not seen an operating F7 in over 30 years, and here I was, about to see one, and TOTALLY out of the blue and surprise. I think my wife of only a couple years was questioning my sanity as I chased that train as far into the Keokuk yard as I could. Seeing the operating Mars light brings back a ton of happy memories when I would see on the northern horizon at night in Hayfield the wobble of light in the sky until the train crested the hill north of town. So I understand your excitement, and I envy you the opportunity to see one even yet. I am in north central Missouri now, but I know where you are chasing these trains as I have been in that Wisconsin/Michigan area a few times. Thanks for posting these. And keep breathin'.

Yeah they're doing this for their fans it's a hell of a trade off in visibility but you can't beat the beauty of a streamliner in good paint.
@thomasboese37933 жыл бұрын
Such a pessimist. The ELS is a "business" not a "social club". They do things to make a "profit" not because it feels good. The unit has many things going for it over a newer loco, it's paid for, it's easy to repair as needed (in part due to the older technology), it "fits" the operational needs and the operating budget. "IF" the owner was running the railroad for what the "FOAMERS" thought was a great idea, all of the other EMD covered wagons on the property would be in fresh paint and working daily.
@kittty20053 жыл бұрын
@@thomasboese3793 We all know it's a business and this MAY be the only piece of scrap iron that runs currently ,it was built around the time I was born and if he was doing this to save a bunch of money he would run it all the time, I never expected an asshole to criticize what I thought was a compliment.
@ncplantdoctor3 жыл бұрын
I’m so happy that the ELS crew decided to let the F unit lead. They must have realized how happy it would make that bearded old billy goat. And they slowed down past your house to give you a better shot of the beautiful old engine. I’m sure that track geometry had nothing to do with them slowing down for your photography.
@jasonasselin3 жыл бұрын
I often wonder who's choice it is to use what engines..
@ncplantdoctor3 жыл бұрын
@@jasonasselin ELS knows that using the F unit will get it the most good publicity on your KZbin channel, as that engine is the best thing you have, so they run it a lot. Frankly, the climb into a car body probably would deter most crews. Can you imagine ‘jumping’ out of a car body engine to throw a switch and then being forced to climb back in? Tough job.

Those road signs in yellow are the suggested speed. We have them in Ohio also. Say the speed limit is 55 and you have a sharp curve, they will put a yellow sign up with the suggested speed of 45 or it could be anything

If you watch the highway traffic in the videos you will notice the B-train log trucks which are their own form of life in da UP. Due to the number of axles (11 generally) they have a GVWR of 77 tons. They can’t travel out of state unless under special circumstances if at all.
@megmolkate2 жыл бұрын
The log trucks seem to be optimized for short runs and also pick up loads back on seasonal roads into logging roads and from time to time have to be pulled on to firm ground by logging equipment when the two tracks out of the log decks thaw a little too much.
@megmolkate2 жыл бұрын
As to the 77 ton limit for B-trains 82 for AB (tractor with two trailers) the axle weighs are lighter and it doesn’t affect the live load on bridges with spans of less than 170’. Michigan has few bridges exceeding that span length.

It’s awesome too have got to see the ELS600 Once More Again. For that it is a great big beautiful part of the locomotive technology during that time of our history before that of now. That they should have never stopped building those beautiful wonderful locomotives 🚂 because they all were a great pice of art. That they haven’t built them like that ever again. But as far as I would say that they all should have gone back to those days before when they were building that pice Of Art Of The locomotive that lovely Gorgeous ELS600 Locomotive 🚂 like that. It’s a great big part of the railroad History that goes across the tracks of the United States 🇺🇸 Of America. And that they all were a big bunch of the hard working locomotive s that made the United States for what it is today. And that they should rebuild all of those other ones up again for what that they would do and that they all have never been as much as a problem that they are all being now today. Because they are not being built as well as that as the time before now. And that it’s been a god blessing that we all have gotten to see it really running up and down the track again once more during the time of their own life time today that they can still show them that they are still the boss of their track. For all of those craftsmanship that has always been a big part of the locomotive 🚂 that makes it Phil Miller locomotive machine that they have ever made for the United States 🇺🇸 Of America. And that the ELS 600 lives on through out the People’s Of The United States 🇺🇸 Of All America. A men and God Bless that great part of our technology. And many more wonderful years of them to follow them.

I remember F (probably F7 or FP7) units with same-sounding horn running past my house as a child. My family disliked the trains, because we lived at one crossing with a second crossing about two blocks away. Due to the proximity of our house and the two crossings, the horn sounded loudly and long. It was a PRR electrified stretch, and my love affair with the GG1 had already started, including its more melodious horn (to my ears). Pennsy used no Marks lights to my knowledge.
