Plastic. It doesn't actually decay; it breaks into smaller and smaller particles until they're microscopic in size. Alien archaeologists looking through Earth's crust with a microscope would be able to tell that we were here because of the plastic microparticles. They'll probably also be able to tell how long ago we lived by the layer in which it occurs in the rock strata.
@rippspeck7 жыл бұрын
If you have millions of years or even infinite time, even plastic decays from high energy radiation like ultra-violet or gamma rays. Also, a lot of polymers "corrode" when in contact with oxygen or even water. Just think old 80s/90s technology like computer cases or keyboards. The beige color comes from the plastics reacting with the air and UV decay. I myself work in the chemical industry designing varnishes and paints, which are also plastics. These factors play a major role when we come up with our products. Lasting color intensity, a coating that does not become brittle over time and continuous protection of the surface are all impacted by UV radiation and oxygen corrosion. Same thing goes for polymers used in packaging, for example. I know a few people working in that field. Anyway, what you described is completely true but pretty short-sighted , in my opinion. After all, a few million years are nothing to nature.
@E101ification7 жыл бұрын

plastic actually doesnt hold up as long as people think. i know they have problems with water bottles and etc. but im a collector and i have a buncha sealed figures from the 80s and 90s and also a bunch of mc donalds cups. the cups are becomming very brittle to a point they almost crack if you dont handle them right. and things like sealed figures the outer plastic bubble turns yellow and depending on the plastic quality will crack easily and shatter. the figures themselves inside the bubble which are also a harder plastic also become brittle and crack at certain points like lets say a joint in the arm where a screw is connected the plastic is more weak and developes a hairline crack and heat expands it etc and just breaks. now larger plastic things like holding containers i dunno i imagine those would be longer depending on thickness

Anthony is the only one who got that question correct. Everyone else gave the dumbest answers possible. Anthony is 100% correct on lunar Machinery that we have taken there during the Apollo era. Everything on the moon will last billions upon billions upon billions of years. All the objects that we have sent through space as long as traveling through space will last for billions and billions of years. The lunar objects from what Jimmy is saying would be destroyed by an impact. Well guess what Jimmy the last major impacts that occurred on the moon at the scale in which you're thinking about occurred billions upon billions upon billions of years ago. Those impacts have occurred again and have not occurred since. It is very unlikely that those impacts to that scale will ever occur again unless somehow our entire solar system travels through a massive massive debris field and even then it's very unlikely any of it would hit the Moon. So therefore Anthony was 100% correct all the lunar material that we have sent such as Landers Lambs whatever will be there for billions upon billions of years

Danny was completely right about the radio waves. waves spread out just like light from a flashlight and over 2 light years will be too far apart from itself to be picked out of back ground static. a high intensity beam of radio waves could be sent like a laser into space but I think for power capacity reasons we don't. As far as aliens picking up the o&a show Dr. kaku was wrong. the power of their broadcast doesn't make it far past our solar system. The more powerful the broadcast the tighter the signal and the farther it can spread out before it can no longer be picked up by a radio receiver.
