you are 100% correct, it's exactly grip tape (lowes/home depot) meant for stair treads, A lot of people think I do it to "Hide" the dw logos, I've been doing this with any pedal I've played since the late 90's. I've had way too many shows where I've accidently knocked a bottle of water onto the kick pedals, they get soaked, and then my feet slide all over the place making songs a pain to play. This prevents that from happening.

@Roger17drummer well to be honest, i tune my drums to a medium tension, basically as loose as possible without rippiling, then I tune them up a half turn around each lug
