I became acquainted with a man in a hobby shop . This was an older man and he was a former member of the Afrika Korps and since I was building a German Mk III for Africa, I ask which color was right he showed me the color Mustard and said this is the color we used. This was in the 1970’s so I know he knew what he was talking about.

My grandfather was part of the 7th panzer division he was in the invasion of France and then fought with the afrika korps not sure what all his stories were all I remember is that he wasn't open about his job..
@MothaLuva2 жыл бұрын
The Afrika Korps used a wide variety of vehicles, up to the point that they even had more captured British vehicles than German the longer the campaign lasted. Paint supplies in Northern Africa was basically „use what’s available“, so consequently German vehicles could have been patched up or modified also with British as well as Italian colours. The colour shade on Pz IIs would be more probably much closer to XF 60 than XF 59. Check out reports on Tiger „131“ captured in Tunisia (and now in running condition in England) in what colour scheme it was found, and how it was restored. Though, the Tigers were generally painted in a slightly different colour (for the African campaign) than the other German vehicles.
@Kojak06 ай бұрын
@@MothaLuva Also to be noted: most vehicles that did arrive in Africa were still panzer grey, and some even didn't even get that first repaint with desert yellow - I read that one tank (possibly a Pz III) spent the entire desert war panzer grey even. That said, an unpainted vehicle was less of a problem really since the dust and the sun faded and made he tanks blend into the environment veryquickly anyway.

Good video, with one caveat: if this was intended for new modellers, be aware that most newbies don't have an airbrush and might even be hesitant to use rattle cans. For a tutorial video, I would have recommended painting everything with a brush just like our ancestors did.

Best beginner model for adult modelers! A friend introduced me to it and had one that I bought. Lot of fun. Not a snap-tite like when I was a kid. Just too bad I'm not really into the German stuff. Can't get past a lot of the men in my ancestry fighting against them. I'm biased, and I admit it. Free country.... Double entendre intended.

Incidentally, the difference between the Ausf F and G (at least on the outside) was the storage bin on the rear of the turret. So you have built an Ausf F.

Just found this channel. How ironic that I bought this exact kit to re-imerse myself into making military kits after 40 years! Even down to choosing to paint it in desert theater camouflage. Luckily I've already bought a lot of the tools over the last few years so I was pretty much set up. Only difference is beng I have bought Vallejo paint. I also have dug out a crusader kit from the 80/81 era that I never built. I believe Tamiya is now marketing it under their name. These videos will be a great guide to my starting again. Noticed that after you had assembled part of the kit you washed the model in soapy water. I was taught to do this before I began to start building the kit. This is because a mold release agent is put in the mold. This makes sure that the plastic will "pop out" of the mold after the plastic is injected. I also put on a pair of thin mil gloves when I begin assembly. This keeps my body oil off the plastic. The gloves also help me to hold the kit parts during assembly. Noticed that you use an eyedropper to put the thinner in the sprayer bowl. I also use the dropper to add the paint. That way I find out how much paint to use. I then use this formula for later painting.

Knowing this doesn’t make your modelling any better, is puts it into context.

Varnishes, satin or gloss, for better flow of the washes. For example, I use green AK Gauzy, or if I go for not-so-shiny end, MicroFlat-MicroGloss from Microscale (although these can be problematic a bit in regards of thinning for airbrush, for brush use they are pretty good).

Thank you very much for the nice video, I enjoyed it very much and can’t wait to go out and buy the same kit to try tomorrow. If it is not too much to ask, could you make a build video of the Tamiya Flak 36/37 (the original one, not the reboxed Africa Korps one)? I admit as a shopping fanatic for the past 40 years and once owned over a thousand model kits, I actually could only muster the courage to build no more than a handful of my kits, and those I started I would just glue them and brush painted them, finally they ended up in the bins because they all looked bad. I did purchased airbrushes before but again no courage to use them. More than a decade ago there was a flood in my storage that damaged part of my collection, and most painful to me was the bulk of my vintage Protar Provini motorbike kits, over a hundred boxes, were damaged. The lost was so painful that I sold the bulk of my surviving collection and quit altogether. Only recently, having watched several KZbin model build videos, I decided to return to the hobby, and vouched to not just buy kits but really build them. The first kit I bought was the old Tamiya Flak 36/37, because that was the first substantial kit that I put together by myself over 4 decades ago. I am now slowly putting the Tamiya Flak together, but it would be wonderful if you could share how you would build this model. Thank you again

No such thing as panzer grey modern paints but lightened it with a sea grey and then varnished it, i love AKs worn effects but if you don't have any you can use a very fine spray of hairspray then paint over it with the Gelbbraun and use a slightly dry brush with a tad of thinner to get the worn paint look more than a chipping effect it comes out beautiful with the Dark grey starting to come through the thinned top coat of the African korps colour as they didn't prime the tank again they just painted right over the (panzer grey) so wore off very easily

@ChampionScaleModelling Жыл бұрын
For acrylic (the Tamiya XF range of paints) you would use X20a from the Tamiya line, you could also use acrylics from Vallejo, Citadel, Ammo etc. and use their own brand of thinners. Thinning the paint helps you get a smooth finish and keep control of the flow, if you paint straight from the bottle you’ll find the finish is not smooth and you’ll struggle to keep in the lines of what you’re trying to paint
