Brings back memories👏👍 Diamond needle files are the only type I have used from the ‘70s, after blunting many Swiss type building kits. I ran a Model Engineering hobby shop in the ‘70-80s, and mentioned the problem to my tool rep, who left the shop and was soon back with a set of 5 diamond files. He told me that plastics are the most abrasive material around, as I had discovered. I still use that set today, having used them not only on plastics but on white metal miniatures as well. They are more expensive, BUT a once only purchase and a pleasure to use as they work whether pushed/pulled or in a circular fashion. (No doubt a better way to explain, but beats me right now🤗)

Great advice. I was out of the hobby for 30 years, I was astounded by the progression of the hobby and choices in materials. After six months back I think you are 100% correct with your advice here. I found a great earth tone pastel set on Amazon. Looking forward to this series.

I have been in the hobby for a while but I really like the way you are describing the issues with the kits: be realistic and warning the newcomers not to get a super dupe one which will give them headache and worse still put them off. Well done and keep going!

Excellent video, not made a model since I was 13, (50+ years ago). Back then it was a paintbrush and enamel paint!. With all these videos offering guidance and tips I'm looking forward to picking up again.

Excellent advise (and insight) for a total novice like myself. Searched the U-Tube for just this kind of advise and step by step instructions and must say this is most comprehensive, interesting and easy to follow.

Last time I did this paint was 20c. Shock & awe at prices & what's available today. Made my own PE bender from an old wood chisel & some scrap, works fine. Bought myself an Ozito air brush kit last week, mainly for the compressor, we'll see how the brush goes. The wife's art supply cupboard does come in handy for paint, thanks darlin'. I have 3 of the models he showed Tamiya are good beginners ones & cheap. Thoroughly enjoy your videos. So many models, so few years left.

Great series, good, clear useful advice. I'd throw in a few clothes pegs too, 'specialist' modelling clamps are available but expensive-can't beat the good old fashioned clothes peg!

Thank you for this video. I've found it really helpful as I drag out of dusty storage some boxed kits and the various bits and pieces of gear that I had got together, many years back. "What else do I need? What do I need to refresh/update?" - this video was really helpful in that respect, and really practical, too. Thank you. Looking now for some similarly simple and practical guidance on working with photo etch (as a beginner, without much in the way of common sense or tools) and in looking at the most scary of potential of purchases: the airbrush. Any pointers welcomed! (Keep up the good work, sir).

Great advice - i have been away from the hobby for over 35 years - first kit i have stated building from Ryefield - mega detail and yes it’s been a challenge for me - i think if you could do a video about PE that would be really helpful - keep up the video’s really helpful and inspiring.

Great advice Jason. I started with a dirt cheap airbriush but that was a mistake as I had a ton of problems. Today, I have an H&S Ultra and Infinity and an Ultimate - the idea is .2, .35 and .4 needles for quick change use. I also recommend getting the best pair of nippers you can afford,. I started with jewelry nippers (I make bracelets as well) and they were 'OK' but I eventually went nuts and got a set of God Hands from Aus. Worth every AUS$.

Sound advice. I would add a standard polystyrene cement such as Revell Contacta to the mix. Better for larger or non-visible joins and, as the joint can be adjusted for some time after gluing, it's a bit more forgiving for beginners. In fact, I've been making kits all my life and still use it.

When I started modelling, all I had was a pair of scissors and a tube of glue................. Paint, brushes, etc... came many years later.

Like your work. For beginners, or those of us getting back into the hobby after some time away, I like the idea of what you are doing. However, could you also include other scales. I admit to being a constant scale modeller, so only 1/72. This is mainly due to storage space limitations, but I would be interested to hear your thoughts on modelling in the different scales.

Hi Jason..Model ordered, sanding sticks ordered, hope Im not cheating by ordering MIG starter German grey, if so will get the recommended paints by you. Going back to day one, have got all the bells and whistles but want to go back to day one and finish a model. Love your style of presenting.

Glad to hear it, no not cheating at all! Use what you feel comfortable with. I’ve been surprised people want to build along so hopefully it all works well enough, I have some ideas for the builds going forward so all good! Thanks for the kind words and support 👍

Man, whete'a the seam filler? You have to include some sort of filler, or at least go over a recipe for sprue goo or something for filling in gaps and seam lines. That and sanding material are undoubtedly essential.

Sorry😂 Your “basics” vids will be great for me. I have the Tamiya Tiger 1 late. I bought the pe set, zimmerit and a metal barrel! I’ve been looking at it and putting it away again. I don’t want to cock it up! So Panzer II will be a great way to practice. I’ve only built aircraft. My wife calls me a big kid daily🤪😂😂😂🍺👍🍺👍
