Today I will be ranking the Level 6 Spells in Baldur's Gate 3! I am weighing these based on how useful they are versus using up your only level 6 spell slot, although some can be cast using free cast from a staff. One of these spells can be cast infinitely if you get a specific spell in act 3 and it can be very useful for taking out trash mob and healing your character. The staff of cherished necromancy with the circle of death spell are really effective. Some of these spells are useful but had changes over patches which is reflected in some of the spells positioning. Since you only get one level 6 spell slot things are tricky to balance! fire sorcerer with the Hat of Fire Acuity and you can cast Disintegrate with like 98% to hit. Casting lvl6 scoring ray its better tho, but disintegrate people is fun

You have to set up with scorching ray to get the high spell save DC for disintegrate, and you’re right you’re probably better off using upcasted scorching ray! Sorcerer and wizard both get Chain Lightning and Disintegrate at level 11 and there’s a big part of act 3 that has Lightning vulnerability

Oh that’s pretty good! Not sure if I would want to use 3 sorcerery points on it but it could be useful!

@@JasonDunnayeah same it’s definitely not worth. However considering the game lets you easily get a 25 spell save DC, disintegrate should NOT be that low. You placed circle of death in S tier purely because of staff of cherished necromancy whereas disintegrate is F tier when most enemies will fail anyways because every wizard/sorcerer tav has like 23+ spell save DC anyways by the time you unlock level 6 spells. I don’t think gear consideration should be a thing so I would place both those spells in C tier. Also twin disintegrate is an absolute banger and looks insane.

​@@CMiY0 You make some great points, I think I was too harsh with disintegrate. Twinned disintegrate is a solid idea, I should have put it in the C tier. I took it on a build guide one time and got heat for it from a ton of people so I ended up changing my opinion on it. I feel like most spells are better than it though Circle of death is only S tier because it can be endlessly cast, and heal you for 18HP each time. Otherwise its yeah C tier. Its just so good with a necromancer since their summons won't be hurt by it

@@JasonDunna yeah I mean a lot of people hate it because it’s like one of those spells that does single target damage and absolutely nothing else. Which on its own kinda sucks but it has a few good things going for it: 50-100 damage is not bad at all, I mean it takes a level 6 slot and that’s not really good for that level but still solid burst damage thats only resisted by like one enemy the entire game. Most of the time you’ll have a better use of a level 6 slot but that’s why it’s C tier, it actually does better single target damage than any other level 6 spell in a vacuum. So there’s some (albeit niche) use case. I actually think circle of death is C tier because in my head I’m not really including the staff of cherished necromancy which basically turns it into a cantrip, which imo is not really fair. It just so happens to have an item that turns it into a level 6 cantrip… that’s kinda unfair to compare it to other spells cause it’ll always win out because of not needing a single resource (very easy to get the life essence charge) for an action that can clear a room. So if you include the staff I get why it’s S tier. I honestly think the spells deserving F tier is probably Wind Walk and Arcane Gate. Arcane gate may have uses but it’s hard to give it a pass like disintegrate because damage is almost never a bad thing but transportation is abundant in BG3. I can think of one situation where arcane gate is the best option whereas something like disintegrate is never the worst option cause you’ll most likely kill or chunk something that isn’t boss level. Flesh to Stone surprisingly is unique enough to be C tier (imo) because it doesn’t proc combat. Lots of C tiers but hey that’s how it theoretically should look right? Like a bell curve.

Eh, circle of death is still a bit of a meme spell. Its targeting is terrible (you have to target it on an individual enemy) which makes its huge AoE work against it. Combined with the fact it does the same damage as a level 3 fireball, it’s a heavily-resisted damage type and it’s a CON save, it’s often not worth it, even with a free cast. The staff of cherished necromancy saves it from being F tier, but the niche use case and the fact it just doesn’t reliably do enough damage late game mean it’s nowhere near S tier for me personally. I’d swap that with wall of ice, which can actually be one of the highest damage AoE spells in the game. Forget the ‘wall’ part and use it as a nuke. It applies its damage on cast and again when destroyed, so if you drop it on wet targets you’re guaranteed to do a crazy 40d6 damage on a failed save. That’s S tier levels of damage for single target, let alone AoE. Plus you can still get a few free casts per day with Markoheshkir. The concentration requirement and the fiddly targeting are really the only drawbacks. Edit to add: Otto’s dance is actually a lot better than it first looks, and I was guilty of underestimating it. While most control spells in BG3 give the target a saving throw when cast and then again at the start of their turn, Otto’s doesn’t give them a save at all until the END of their first turn. So even if a boss makes their very first save, you still make them effectively skip a turn (except for bonus actions) and you can potentially get a few guaranteed attacks with advantage. That makes it probably the most powerful control spell in the game for a boss fight.

Circle of death on a necromancer is busted though! Since the necromancer wizard heals for 18 with that level 6 spell AND it doesn’t hurt the zombies/ghouls you’ve summoned! It’s quite meme outside of using the staff of cherished necromancy and being a necromancer wizard but it’s powerful with that combination. I’ll have to give ice wall more testing. I’ve gotten much better bang for my buck from cone of cold but I am a big fan of cold magic. Otto’s dance was great when the target made no saves! But if they make the save on turn 1 you’re screwed and wasted a level 6 spell slot so it’s a tough opportunity cost. If it works it’s great though!

@@JasonDunnawall of ice is stronger than chain lightning actually. It does 10d6 when you raise the wall and another 10d6 when it breaks (which incentivize you to break the wall/ cancel concentration). With wet condition it’s 40d6 which is higher than chain lightning 20d8. It didn’t work originally on 1 part of the damage but now it works. Chain lightning damage would be higher only if multiclass into tempest cleric for destructive wrath (cause max damage output vs average dice roll on wall of ice) otherwise wall of ice is the king of damage. Though sometimes the targeting could be difficult (to draw a line) but if the condition is right, it could even target more than chain lightning

@@JasonDunna re Otto’s, even if they make the save on turn 1, they still miss that turn. So at an absolute minimum you force a boss to skip one turn and get advantage on attack rolls before that. If they fail even a single save, they skip 2 turns, and so on. If you look at something like hold monster, they have to fail on the initial cast and then again at the start of their turn (ie 2 saves) in order to skip a single turn. Otto’s is different to other control spells that way

globe of invulnerability is broken like in the end fight you cant lose and in the Raphael fight you can't lose so I avoid using it just to create a challenge

Oh yeah suuuper strong. It’s wild you can add it to any full caster if you take a single level wizard dip and since it doesn’t use any stats to cast, you can use it even with low intelligence. Super powerful in a lot of situations !

Hold Person will make the target fail dex saves so chain lightning and disintegrate will do their full damage. Wet + chain lightning is still better than chill + wet + disintegrate in my opinion. Speaking of chain lighting, when would you want a level 12 cleric in the party instead of your 2 tempest/ 1 wizard 9 sorcerer?

Yeah hold person + wet + chill + disintegrate is good but requires more set up than just water and chain lightning. I usually run tempest cleric 6 / storm sorcerer 6 or tempest/sorcerer/wizard but 12 levels is nice because you can get planar ally Deva for revives while you deal damage

I prefer a 1 wiz, 11 cleric, so I can pick every spell, but to each their own.

Honestly I think the control spells like eyebite, Otto's, Blade Barrier, and wall of throns are too high. It's not so much that these spells are bad but the problem is bg3 has very fast combat where you can nova enemies in one round that makes all the higher lvl cc useless. For example you want to cc a key target why would you use eyebite or Otto's iressitible dance over hold person or hold monster? If you used that same 6th lvl spell slot for hold person you can cc 5 people or if it was hold monster thats 2 targets. So for me tgose spells would have to go to low C tier.
