UPDATE (Aug 2023): After almost a year of use I broke the front aluminum skid. It does great in most circumstances, but it does have limitations. For a full update how it broke watch this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZpDQlpWuhpqoeMk

You don't need the armor until you need the armor. I'd say the oil pan skid is a must if you're just gonna do one. If you break the oil pan you're all kinds of screwed. It's also one of the most likely areas to get a hit.

Yeah the stock skid is decent... It's just thin. I was just warning folks in case they didn't plan on or want to do suspension upgrades.

Watching the Overland DIY playlist during surgery recovery and so disappointed to have reached the end! Can't wait for Phase 2!

Nice! Hey feel better and I'm glad I could help pass the time for a while. In case you missed the Mount St. Helens climbing video... that one is also worth your time.

@@JasonExplainsThings That's a good one! I also climbed St. Helens in October this year. It's quite a workout!

I bet you see better gas mileage on the highway with these. A lot of air turbulence comes from no flat surfaces underneath. I wouldn’t know how much you would see, but I’m curious.

Thanks man! I dig your Frontier. I considered one of those as well. Yeah the next batch of Tacoma additions are pretty exciting... now to just find some free time to install them.

@JasonExplainsThings haha awesome 👌 just gave it a watch/like. Are those the carhartt custom seat covers I see? If so how do you like them and how's the fit? I have the precision fit on my Ram and love them but due to the price I'm considering the customs on my Taco.

Is 8.4lbs really going to make the front end sag? Seems odd

Not all weight is the same, adding weight to your frame is not the same as your roof from a safety perspective in regards to body roll. Aluminum could never support the full weight of your vehicle so using it for anything other than preventing gravel hitting your components is the only “armor” it can provide. There are fewer gimmicks as absurd in the off-road community as aluminum skid plates. If your choosing aluminum over steel the only thing your saving is possibly your driveline and steering components but again adding weight to the bottom of the vehicle probably the safest place to go heavy from a physics and body roll safety standpoint. Infact, aluminum skids are a huge liability as they dent and pock creating sticking points and can leave you high centered and stranded if alone without a winch. You should always go steel as the whole purpose is to create a solid surface that can support the full weight of your vehicle without denting allowing you to “slide” over obstacles. Skids are not the place to try and win the weight war.
