At 38 years old, I was overweight and out of shape. I had never competed in anything in my life. But after watching the Crossfit Games on TV, I was inspired to try it out. A few years later, I'm now a 2x Crossfit Games Champion! In this video, I share my tips for anyone looking to compete in crossfit - no matter what your age!

ℹ️ ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
Most people are surprised to hear that I have not been an athlete my whole life. Far from it.
I was talked into taking my first CrossFit class after months of persuasion.
My first workout completely surprised and destroyed me.
And... I went all-in from day one. (not recommended).
In this video - I share about my journey from walking into a CrossFit gym overweight and unhealthy at 38 to winning back-to-back championships at the CrossFit Games.
Learn from my experience, including the mistakes I made, and be inspired to chase and accomplish your specific dreams!

Enjoyed the video. Congrats on your journey and accomplishments--you have definitely put in the effort and paid your dues!!! As a 67 year old guy, I'm just starting gym workouts, and my goals are more modest: aerobic fitness as measured by VO2 max, and enough strength training to both avoid sarcopenia and effortlessly doing ADLs (activities of daily living), etc. Adequate nutrition, limiting (or eliminating alcohol) and building in rest days seem very important to achieve optimum health, so I really appreciate the steps you took to be the champion you are. Keep up the good work!

Your early journey in crossfit is exactly how mine started. First month I went all in and did an old injury in my shoulder and couldn’t lift a thing and since then I have recovered and altered my training to 4 days a week mixed with cardio in my off days. Loving my journey so far and so good to listen to your journey.

At 39 you have decades of fitness ahead of you. Crossfit has a retention rate of 9 months before 'usually' an injury boots you out and people stop. I've seen 100's of 'I used to workout at CrossFit and hurt myself' start up at our facilities. Please go slow, enjoy the ride and don't get forced into performing beyond your own capacity and more importantly mobility limits. 💪💪

Jason I haven’t truly felt this inspired never. I am 36 and been following CrossFit since I was 26 and always have dreamed about being fit. It’s always been a battle trying to change my lifestyle but seeing your video today brought me a new fresh breath of life to me. Thanks Jason for your video I found it very inspiring and congrats on wining the CrossFit Games twice at 43! What an accomplishment. I'm sure the "imbalance" as you call it wasn't easy but you have the discipline to stick to it year over year. I started CrossFit January 17th 2020 at the age of 47 and I'm about to start my 3rd year. I love it so much. I go Monday through Friday at 6am and have been doing so consistently barely missing a day here or there due to traveling for work. I have improved so much at 49 I can do almost more than most of my classmates. When I started I had no idea what anything was or how to do anything, literally anything. It's amazing if you stick something out and actually follow through and put the work in how much you can accomplish. Anyway, thank you for all your videos, they are super helpful. I wish you all the best moving forward as a CrossFit athlete and please keep making these awesome videos. I appreciate you.

You've relit my fire! I was a depressed 206lb, 5'3" weekend drunk since 13yrs old, lifetime smoker, ptsd, etc etc and 2018 I got rid of sugar in all forms (I was eating a family size bag of skittles a day) including carbs. Lost a lot of weight while working a very physically demanding job 6hrs a day but had started drinking again. Anyway quit drinking Dec 2020, went from jogging 30mins with having to stop to running an hour straight. That messed my hip flexors and hammys up like crazy so found myself in a crossfit gym. It's been 1 year this month and I'll be 44 in Sept.. I'm so in love. With Crossfit and really with myself for the first time in my life. I truly know what it means and feels like to love myself. Hello. Your video was very inspiring. I'm 43, started crossfit August 9th @ 300 lbs. I'm 271 now and eating more than I ever have before. In the last week I deadlifted 145 lbs, learned I can jump rope, did a handstand against the wall, found I can jog and SPRINT! Am participating in my first Barbells for Boobs next Saturday and another competition the Saturday after. I don't think I'll win anything but that's not why I want to do it. Middle of August I could climb the 2 flights of stairs of my apartment without getting out of breath and taking a break. I can walk with my family at our favorite hiking trail without just sitting on the bench and waiting for them to return. And I'm just getting started. Imagine what I can do by next August.

This is motivating... I'm 55, been up and down in weight and fitness - Former Marine, went in in '85 and after bootcamp I was 148lbs with a 36" chest at 5'-9" - A year later I was 185lbs with a 48" chest. I've had all sorts of issues, ankle, knees - several motorcycle accidents, surgeries, therapy, ligament reconstruction, cadaver bones, scopes... In 2010 I was getting close to 230lbs, got into P90X and in 8 weeks was down to 189lbs and looks like a friggin' GOD - Injured a shoulder, then a knee - recovered started again and had a bad motorcycle wreck (cadaver bone in left wrist - broke both wrists) so had to recover again, finally got through an entire cycle. In the past 12 years I've kept it pretty well together and can usually smoke "normal" people half my age - Last year traine myself to where I was able to do 22 overhand pull-ups per set (something I couldn't do when I was 19) and was at 187lbs again, like I was at 20 - Now I'm at 201 and feeling fat but still able to get a decent workout in when I do, just having energy issues - 47" chest, wearing 36" Levis... I needed to see this - been working on diet, no more bread.... Was just visiting an old girlfriend from 30 years ago who's done crossfit but now doing masters power lifting - I see the writing on the wall..... I'm waking up - Thank you for this :)

Aside from what Jason is talking about, what comes across is his authenticity and passion. Two aspects of character, which over the 'long haul', are hard to fake!! Kudos to you - and the positive impact you're making for clients and the YT ecosphere. Thank you for this video. I had my son at 42, and I was 6'4" 320lbs. To say I was out of shape was an understatement. I stumbled around for 2 years trying ot find a system that worked not really paying attention to food, and certainly not having a fitness routine. July of 2022, I found the CrossFit gym, and in 6 months Ive lost 35 lbs. I have trap on these shoulders. My lifts are weak compared to where I wan to be, but my wife told me I looked "so muscular" which is really the only verifcation I need. I am trying ot focus on food to develop that Crossfit athlete body we see when watching the games. It is nice to know we can start late and make such an impact. I want to live longer for my son. Thanks again.

Oh you are 2 weeks of intermittent fasting away from 15 pounds of weight loss. Guaranteed. Eat one meal, but eat what you normaly do or even a bit more. Less carbs, not much less. ( or the same carbs) cut food carbs for beer/treats if you like. Lots of meat and fat. Do not shy from fat or meat. Do not eat vegetable oils at all. Pour cream, lard and tallow on your food. For real. 3 weeks into this, 15 pounds, 210 to 195 pounds. Keep running and stuff. Run before you eat, for sure. All the beer or one big treat. But eating fat will keep you full. Skipping all the snack time and extra meals is how loose the fat and dimensions. PLEASE try it just for 3 days. Let me know

this was a fantastic, realistic video. touches all the bases and shows what can be done for regular health as well as what needs to be done to make a run (at anything in life really). You need to make your choices based on realistic, timely and appropriate targets. There are millions of good athletes, less great ones and then the pro/elite ones. The mindset and sacrifices are what elevates you beyond being just a King or Queen in your own social sphere reminiscing about your glory days in high school. from Vanilla Sky...every day is another day to turn it all around (or something like that). Jason is proof in the pudding. Thanks for this share.

It is never too late to improve health and fitness. I was obesse at 64, made 18 stone, was vertually crippled with swollen feet and legs. I figured get in shape or die. I went keto, started walking, increased to 7k hill walk / jog per day. Lost 5 stone in 4 months. Joined CrossFit and 7 weeks later made 3rd in the 2019 CrossFit Open in male 60+ in Ireland. The 2020 was 6 months later, I made 2nd. Then covid messed up my rythmn with closed gyms and such so I set up a home gym. Now I just work out at home mainly with weights. I have increased back squat 50% and deadlift 15% My The problem is I find it hard to find the balance between lifting heavy enough to gain muscule and increase strength and avoiding injury to back and shoulders. Probably need professional guidance.

Count your macros using a fitness app. It’s changed my life. I used to struggle with weight loss for years. I was the cardio king. When I learned about macros, and understood what was going into my body (carbs, fats, proteins) I started to make smarter decisions because I understood the math of what was going to happen. I now enjoy cookies everyday, delicious meals that I make, I just make sure that I always hit my protein marker (1 gram of protein for every pound of your goal weight-I.E. 175 pounds goal weight=175 grams of protein a day). I know my carb number is 350 a day, so I eat whatever carbs I want as long as it doesn’t go over my number. Mostly healthy carbs, of course. 😎 I’m currently 34 and got a 6 pack for the first time last year by using my macros, with only walking as my cardio. I walked to 10% body fat. You can do it, too! Just do your research with Macros!

I’ve never done CrossFit competitions or stayed consistent in classes because of injuries and class prices so I had stuck to bodybuilding. Bodybuilding worked as far as my body transformation goals of not being the fattest fit person that people knew and actually dropping my body fat and building strength and muscular definition for MYSELF. I was able to hit my goals last year for my first attempt at bodybuilding because my life was “balanced”. Now out of the military with injuries and my life and my family has become IMBALANCED. My mindset is non existent, like I have forgot how to get there. But you’ve showed me that it’s still possible. I’m going for it. I don’t know exactly what to do first because I feel like there’s some important financial issues I need to figure out first but I’m not quitting.
