Buying a Sony flagship right now is one of the least "future-proofing" things to do. What's future-proofing from Sony is the pro stuff that the competition doesn't have, like FX30 and FX3, power zoom lenses, certain third-party lenses, XLR top handle, etc.

it really is tough when the industry moves quite fast
@frankfeng27017 күн бұрын
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema I don't think this is the main reason. In fact, the camera industry is slow, especially in the software department, compared to other smartphones and drones. If Sony is able to keep up with firmware, then we wouldn't even need this A1ii.

Actually that crown goes to owning a Canon flagship

I can't believe that 4K recording is still subsampled or line skipped and not 8K oversampled like in the Nikon Z8 (8.3K oversampled 4K60p) or in the R5 (4K Fine oversampled from 8K up to 30p). The only oversampled 4K mode in the a1 II is the cropped APS-C mode. A flagship should be able to record full-width 8K oversampled 4K60p or at the very least 30p!

As always Jason, a great balanced video. A thought to Sony; I am an A1 owner who suffers from GAS, can afford to upgrade and would normally do exactly that but this is my thought process. Trade in my A1 for a new one, likely cost $4.5K, or keep my A1 and buy the Nikon Z8 and potentially migrate to N-Raw, ProRes Raw, 8K 60 fps and great photos with the ability to capture events when not present. Add to that continuous Firmware updates that keep the camera competitive. Sony, users should not even be thinking this after this release. So, my decision is as follows, I will either buy the Z8 or wait for Nikon's next release knowing it will compete but be more cost effective with better video features and photo functionality.

yeah that's the thing there for most. Price.

The A1-ii is FINALLY the one and only camera that is an upgrade in EVERY way to my A99ii, with the inclusion of the flip screen. Now I just need to work out how to do it!!
@harryvuemedia51068 күн бұрын
The A1-ii does have some worthy upgrades and if you don't own an A1, definitely worth the $6,500 usd price tag. Otherwise, it is tempting just to get an A1 now with its new price tag at $5,500 usd. You can get used models for $3,800 - $4,500 usd as well. Both cameras are great and both will last 15 years easily!
@JasonMorrisphotocinema8 күн бұрын
the A1 II slotted in the came price as the A1 did. A1 II is a no brainer for working professionals for sure unless they need 120fps stills in the A9III

What about colour science? My impression from side by side comparisons on other channels is that the mark 2 pictures are cooler, are a step backwords regarding the greens and skin tones are less pleasing. Could you notice a difference in editing?

IBIS for video i prefer to disable it and use gyroflow app for normal video and for cine 24p s1/50 i use gimbal .

just IBIS. No digital stability in 8k due to processing

I feel like the A7RV is basically this camera however cheaper. Minus the 120 fps and 30fps 8K, lut imports and golden ratio. Obviously there's other minor differences but I feel like they are the main differences everything else is personal preference. I'd be intrigued to see a breakdown/face off between the two.
@JasonMorrisphotocinema8 күн бұрын
you're right. the A7 RV is a pretty special camera. The main differences are 4k 120fps, faster readout sensor for stills and a couple other features.

I'm trying to figure out if switching from photo to video is faster or not with the new a1-ii. On the a1, I can be on manual mode for my landscape shots, then quickly switch to movie mode and have my shutter speed and iso already where I want it for video. Then switching back I am ready for photos again. With my a7iv, if I am on manual mode then for photos I have my settings and when I switch to video mode it keeps the same settings as the photo mode, so my shutter could be 1/1000 with iso 100, which means I then have to change all the settings or switch to video mode on a preset. Have you found a fast way to switch between photo and video mode?
@JasonMorrisphotocinema8 күн бұрын
yes you can go into the settings and make sure if keeps settings you want. i think it is called "keep same settings for still/movie"
@SummitForWellness8 күн бұрын
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema Ahh that's awesome! I'll look for the setting. I was using the a7iv and liked the photo/video switch and when I picked up a used a1 I was bummed it didn't have it at first. But then I got a really good workflow with manual and the movie setting. Glad to see there's a way to keep the settings!

Makes sense if you need any of those actual features but in terms of IQ. Nah. Rather have Lumix come out with a faster readout camera because at least they give features that people need like Opengate and they update their cameras beyond a year unlike Sony who abandoned the A1 for no reason other than to push people to buy the next one.
@JasonMorrisphotocinema8 күн бұрын
well IQ is identical so if someone is wanting to upgrade for that it isn't worth it. This camera is for working professionals and most professional won't care about price just performance and what the camera can do for them

The A1II doesn’t do 8k60 which the Canon R5mii does for over $2k less and you’re talking about it being future proof? Yeah OK. Is the A1II better than the A1? Obviously. Is it worth $6500 in a world where you can get a Z8 for $3509 and a R5mii for $4300? Clearly not unless you’re stuck in Sonys ecosystem which means they are screwing their customers.
@JasonMorrisphotocinema8 күн бұрын
I don't know why it can't do 8k 60p. Being stuck in the ecosystem is real for people who have a tonne of lenses for sure
