I unsubscribed to your channel because I found myself buying way more gear than I need instead of really pushing and getting to know the gear I had. Nothing against you, I just found that I needed to stop window shopping with gear channels. You just won me back. This video has the type of measured honesty and insight I wish was more common in the KZbin gear space. Sure, many people will throw in a line here and there about being fiscally responsible but it feels more like a disclaimer on the side of a cigarette box. I had the fortune to get the 50mm 1.2 early on when I moved from Fuji to Sony. When I don’t need reach, it is my everything lens. FMO is so real. We’ve all made images that we love with cheaper gear. The big film making channels are all about sponsored content and selling you products these days, more than about making interesting content about filmmaking itself. Even when it's a video that, at first, seems like it's going to talk about something interesting regarding film making, you realize at some point that the video topic was only there to serve as an opportunity for product placement and sponsorship which is the main reason the video was produced to begin with. I realise that KZbinrs need to make a living (as content creators), but the sad consequence of that is that we (as content consumers) end up viewing a sequence of product advertisements

Great Video, I’ve just bought the FX30 after watching so many of your videos on it. The f1.4 for me isn’t a problem because I honestly don’t this in the final product of a picture or video anyone would really be able to tell by eye “oh that’s an f1.4” I would actually take the smaller, lighter and cheaper 1.4 over a more expensive, bigger and heavier 1.2
@noth60620 күн бұрын
Eh, do you think that is the argument? That someone can tell? Well, it's not. But what people get stuck on is min/maxing everything, which means they are comparing things on paper and in some cases at the extreme, and ignoring practical considerations as well as price. Those are the same people who would absolutely insist on going for the FX3 instead of the FX30 for example. To them it doesn't matter that the Fx3 is a much harder camera to work with in many ways, and not really just "better" than the Fx30 in some way.

Jason, you slayed this topic, absolutely killed it. I’m tired of seeing test charts and even talking about loca or even chromatic aboration, in general. These videos need to show these lenses used in actual environments and I don’t think Sony needs the 1.2 because in actual testing, a f.4 vs f1.2 differences are almost a wash. We have gotten so caught up in numbers and specs and have forgotten to talk about the art of photography and videography. It’s not just the You Tubers fault, but the analytics, which is a direct reflection on us the viewer because we are telling You Tubers that we aren’t interested unless you all are talking about gear and trying to sell it either consciously or unconsciously. Sony has to slowly replace their lenses because Nikon and Canon have caught up and surpassed them in the actual quality of the glass if you think about when some of these GM lenses were introduced. I have had the opportunity to shoot with an Canon R3 and I will tell you it is a beautiful camera and the lens, which cost an arm and leg are gorgeous, but I’m too invested in Sony and Canon’s third party support is practically nonexistent. I love my Sony 135mm f1.8 GM as my favorite GM lens because I have used it in the field and I know it is like a sniper with autofocus, but it will need to be eventually replaced by Sony if they want to stay competitive. Using this equipment at a wedding, portrait shoot event or a video shoot lets you know what a system-lens and camera are made of. Thanks Jason for saying the truth, every camera, lens or other gear isn’t for everyone and that is indeed okay.

Most of these people on youtube only work on youtube and dont have any idea what a professional job feels like outside of this platform…. And thats ok. We know who actually does the work and can actually offer advice and reviews in work environment versus test charts and backyard work. Theres a place for both and thats beautiful. I do not hate the Sony 85mm 1.4 GM II, it is a very fine Lens, but I do not need the aperture 1.4 for a 85mm Lens ! I use the excellent Zeiss Batis Sonnar T* which I got last year used for US $550 (taxes included) in excellent condition. The Zeiss Batis 85mm is light weight and it handles very well, I can highly recommend it ! I have the Sony 135mm 1.8 GM, which have outstanding image quality, but it is big and heavy, last year I went through most of my best image taken with the Sony 135mm 1.8 GM, most of the image was taken at aperture 5.6, some with 4.0 and less with 2.8 or 8.0, only rare with 1.8, 2.0 or 2.5 and those 1.8 did not always look pleasing ! So now when I have the excellent Voigtländer Macro APO-Lanthar 110mm 2.5, which is more compact and light weight than the Sony 135mm, I rarely use the Sony, only sometimes for Landscape when I have the Lens in my car. I think that I will get the much more light weight Zeiss Apo Sonnar 135mm 2.8 T* Lens when I have spare money for it ! So my advice are, do not got for those big and bulky lenses with large apertures, you do not need them, they are much too over hyped !!! I have 45 years of experience both as a professional and as a hobby photographer.

Oh well can’t make everyone happy. I think Sony’s biggest mistake was when Sigma came out with the 85 f1.4 DG DN and it was so much better than the old 85 gm the should have come out with a new version then. In my 60’s, I am fed up with carrying around unnecessarily heavy lenses, but I still want to take high quality images and for me this new 85 will be perfect. Will the ⅓ stop less light worry? Sony and Sigma come up on top with their fast primes. Sigma and Sony 50 mm 1.2 are the best in the game. For me the price is the issue. While in dollar it stayed the same price, here in Europe the new GM2 costs 300 euros more than the RRP opf the GM1. On top of it the old GM1 you can get new reliably for 1500 euros with sales and rebates. So the the new GM2 costs 600 more than the GM1 and literally double what the sigma costs. Also the new GM2 costs just 200 less than the 50 1.2 GM. So the GM2 realistically has nearly the price of a 1.2 prime.

@@JasonMorrisphotocinema Yes, but I think the increase on the GM2 is higher than on other lenses that get a refresh. The 24-70 and the 70-200 got all reasonable price increases when they got refreshed. As far as I recall both were at a around a 10% increase in theory and practice. The 85 refresh has a 16% increase in theory, but practically it is a 33% increase (all the shops around here are selling the GM1 at around 1500 for at least a year). Now I wonder why they were able to maintain the price in dollars but had to increase the price that drastically on the euro version... higher cost of raw materials and shipping should have made an increase in the dollar price as well, but it didn't. That is why it feels such a punch in the stomach when looking at the price increase comparatively and not just the absolute price

1.4 is perfect, I am buying it, the 1.2 will come, heavy and clunky, nothing for me
@JasonMorrisphotocinema2 ай бұрын
yeah definitely will be very heavy if they do create it
it is bokeh that every KZbinr paid by Sony refused to do a comparison with GM1
@JojoJoget2 ай бұрын
Because Sigma 85 exists and is still the best value.

yep . very true. tonnes of value

85mm 1.2 would be way too blurry & too heavy, you can't even see the location, the new 1.4 would be more than fantastic if I end up getting one
@JasonMorrisphotocinema2 ай бұрын
weight would be the biggest factor here. Nikon and Canon have demonstrated this for us

I better have bigger lens than 1.4

I feel like Lenses should be cheaper. $1800 is way too much

I was waiting for the newer 85. I eventually bought the 50 1.2 and absolutely love it. With a 50 and 135 gm....I'm good😅

Odd title that got me to click because I know a ton of people that love 85mm. Got me to click but won't get me to watch. Pass.

The time for 1.2 glass is OVER, high ISO so much better and post processing can easily blur the background as you see fit.

Post processing you say... 🤦🏻♂️

I’ll take my Viltrox 56mm 1.7 on Fuji that is tiny… also super cheap. Ha

oh that is a nice lens too. My fave is the Viltrox 75mm F1.2 Pro

hahahahahaha this is why I won't get this lens

These idiots had a chance to make a 75mm 1.2 It could’ve been more compact than than the Sigma and it would have be passed the compression that you find above 70 mm that looks the same as an 85 rendering faces in that flattering portrait look. It would be smaller and videographers would be happy also. A 1.2 at 75mm would have deeper bokeh than the 50 mm 1.2 GM and the 85mm 1.4 Who is running Sony? I remember when they used to innovate…

waiting to see this lens vs sigma vs the sony 85mm 1.8 cuzzz the 1.8 lowkey is the best bang for your buck
@JasonMorrisphotocinema2 ай бұрын
I compared it to the f/1.8 G. Was a surprising result
@dominiquerichardson2 ай бұрын
@JasonMorrisphotocinema as someone who owns the 85 1.8 non or my clients, has complained yet, lol and with the sigma being in the middle price wise I'm interested to see if sony can be that much better for it's price or is the sigma the perfect blend of price to Performance

Okay, so in order to get good audio we have to watch you hold a stupid mic in front of your face? Maybe you should get a different mic.
