There is way to much conflicting and bad information floating around that I though I would do a video on exactly what I do to keep my snakes healthy and ready to go for breeding.

@@rmzlife I never recommend rat for boas until they are at the small rat size. I've found boas have a very hard time digesting baby rats. Baby rats are pretty much all skin and milk. It would be like us eating butter as a meal. I've seen it increase the risk of regurgitation and diarrhea.

Yeah obese boas are a sad sight to see, yet some people purposely get them like that-thinking it “looks” appealing. But naw, it looks pretty horrible IMO. I love how your boas look and definitely plan on mine’s having the same muscular shape! I’m still amazed at how BCI/BCCs used to look so damn scary big-but after being around them and holding them, they’re like the best size snake (if ppl feed correctly like you described).

Excellent video - thanks! It’s so tempting to overfeed snakes, especially eager feeders - most of us love it when our snakes just grab food the minute it’s offered! I made this mistake with my first carpet python, and it took some months on a very reduced feeding schedule to get him back into shape. I offer my b.c. amarali quails now and then, as a treat, rats are her main food source. I give the carpets rodents and chicks on alternate feeds. Avian prey generates looser poops, so I never give them foul on consecutive feeds.

This is an excellent video. There is a lot of info backed on science but it's still roughly in the range that you are speaking of. The problem is on Facebook you see a lot of people with old school feeding practices. They feed their boas large or jumbo every two weeks and while that may be needed in certain situations it's not and shouldn't even Norm. I always speak with my veterinarian who has had boas for 40 years and frequently is a guest lecturer at the local colleges for biology and has spoken at many herpetology conventions. When I got my Suriname she was healthy but slightly underweight so I was giving her a medium every two weeks we're normally I would do probably every 3 weeks then I bumped her up to large every 3 weeks instead of every 4 weeks. Now I usually rotate her large has every 3 to 4 weeks. She's growing slowly but she's extremely healthy. I have two smaller bc that were on Mice from their other owner and they are under a year old and both over 3 ft. They never wer power bed or overfed and now they get a weaned rat from me every two weeks. Nearly zero bump visible. Generally when my boas get big enough for Jumbo I will do every 4 weeks or so but you are right on the money when you said you should keep an eye on the snake and make changes based on their body. I respect the hell out of you and your videos and it's nice to see guys like you spreading good information instead of Brian B and his ridiculous practices

My female boa has that shape she is almost a year and people are telling me it should be every two weeks not every week but it's 3 weeks between every shed and she is not fat she is on rat fuzzies and the chillest snake i have ever held. 3421958 I'll do a basic boa care video. Only way to avoid illnesses and I factions is the correct care. Respiratory infections can be caused by a variety of things that are all related to husbandry. They're typically caused by unclean conditions, heat being too low, cages in a drafty area, or humidity being off either too low or high. I'll get to this shortly!

Thanks man , had a BCC when I was a kid for 13 years and I just rescued a 1 year old 4 months ago and I am on 1 week frequency still cause she was force fed to stay alive when I got her she was all sorts of chewed up , prolly from one of those people on FB that have all the answers already , but idk since she’s of age but so far behind her size if I should go biweekly yet , I feed her ASF gut loaded with mealworms cause my Pythons grow like mushrooms on them and she was very very thin , putting on weight but at 50” she is still only about 1” thick , Argentine possibly from what I think anyway , idk in a pickle to either keep the weekly schedule or biweekly with her putting on weight but she’s maybe 1.1/3” thick yet , not the preferred girth as the one in your hand ... idk my last one just at twice a month since I got her as a newbie

I'm one of the folks on social media, arguing with the newer folks and their feeding regimens. My simplest answer was watch the animal, and feed accordingly. Each animal is different, and will respond differently. Having a black and white feeding regimen doesn't work across the collection. I had to just leave most of the groups.

Hey dont undermine or cut yourself down you're approach over 20+ years is you're scientific method so it is backed by science you have 20 years of independent research I like you're humble approach not trying to make a man eater you speak to the health of the animals and you have my respect I'm fairly new to red tails I've had Kenyan sands Brazilian rainbow boas up to 10 years ago none at present and ball pythons starting around the morph explosion about 15 years ago and got into breeding projects dabbled in venomous just as a keeper for my friend who did venom research not my thing too many close calls but I got my first red tail about 6 years ago tragically at 6 months a 12 day winter power outage claimed her and I have my first snake and my dads first shes a 22 year old retic my dad got as a baby when I was about 5 and is a Big Girl! Really respect you're approach to make it about the health care and wellbeing of the animal not a pissing contest to see who's can eat a human the fastest. Other than buy from a reputable source I feel boas are fantastic pets. Also look for a smaller animal and grow up. Al ot of people just want the big snake. But will be much more rewarding if you raise

I personally think that it has nothing to do with them being a bcc and everything to do with if they are WC. I have captive born and bred bcc that are waaaaayy easier than bci, but all rules are off if it’s wild caught.

Generally they are not going to go for a cat since its much larger than most will see as prey, but you will want to stick with something less than 4-5 ft if its a real concern

It's best to have an actual schedule instead of just winging it. It's not the best idea to just feed when "they look hungry" or "when they poop". You could underfeed or overfeed them accidentally. Do research on feeding schedules and the best one for your size of snake.

I have two young male boas that are kept together and are doing well but to an extent as I have noticed one of their ‘release areas’ I guess, the ass, looks scarred in some way. They get along great and always tend to be curled up together. I have every intention of separating them however another issue that I cannot find a decent answer to anywhere... I want to get them both vivs that they could live in for the rest of their lives but I’m not sure what size would be ideal and it’s difficult to find very large vivs anywhere. A lot of times snakes are sexed incorrectly. You could have a male and a female going to pound town. Or you’re temps could be off and they’re trying to get heat?

I'd contact the breeder to ask what she was feeding on. It's a vague question that I can't really answer without knowing the whole history of the snake. The breeder will know all of that so he/she is your best bet on the feeding question

Hey Jason, you mention that what you're doing isn't backed by science. The truth is that science is based on making mistakes and learning from them, developing theories and proving/disproving them. and as snakes and other reptiles have different individual behaviors (as you mention) one scientific theory cannot be used for all of them. Doing what works for the individual snake while trying to maintain a appropriate weight is the best approach I've seem thus far! Now if only I can get my snake to switch to frozen thawed...

I just bought a 10 year old BCI, His temp is at a constant 85F his cold side is 75f, humidity is always between 55% and 75% He is healthy, i took him to a exotic vet they said he was fine.. He is a all round happy snake, loves burrowing in soft aspen and loves being handled/getting exercise.. But he will not eat.... I tried leaving him for a week and feeding, leaving the FT rats in his cage over night & he still wont eat... He hasn't eaten for a month... Do You think its because its breeding season? I do not want to assist feed if he is just taking time off of feeding. He lives in a 40 gallon glass terrarium.. I believe he was in a pull out enclosure like Yours before hand. Maybe he is getting used to his terrarium? He was eating a small rat every 2 weeks, he is 7 lbs and 6 foot when stretched out.

Assuming that's the size the puts a small lump then yes. Then adjust maybe skipping a week or two if you see the snake getting chubby or increase the prey size a little if she looks like she's getting skinny.

Great video man.. I have a question have you ever had a boa constrictor that would not eat but it would strike its food. That's what I'm going through man I just bought a Costa Rican boa it's a hatchling very small the person I bought it from told me to feed it the next day so I tried feeding it a small tiny thawed out rat pup it would strike but wouldn't constrict so I tried putting it in its mouth and it would spit it right out do you have any methods , should I get small mice? You shouldn't feed a boa directly after you've brought it home. You need to give them time to adjust to their surroundings. And never force-feed a snake unless absolutely necessary. It stresses them out if they're a healthy weight.

Its usually a result of it being super stressed and/or scared. Basically it's not even recognizing food but seeing everything as a threat. I'd give it a little time with no handling and very minimal interaction and try again.

No, do not wait until she poops. They can sometimes hold it a very long time. As far as how do you know if you are feeding too much or too little and just need to look at the snake. I try to put a lot of examples in the videos of what boas should look like. If they are getting a little heavy skip a week or two, if they are getting too skinny increase it by a week and hold that frequency until they get the right weight. I know that's not super Direct but there really is no set schedule. You just have to look at them in the just. I use two to three weeks as a guideline when they are adults but you may be feeding every 2 weeks or every 4 weeks depending on how the snake is maintaining weight

@@anthonysalas6085 yes you absolute can switch between them. It wouldnt hurt to switch to weekly as long as the prey size is appropriate. Keep in mind thought that he is likely close to the age where you my want to start stretching out the frequency. Maybe skip around. Feed weekly then skip a week. Every 2-3 weeks. Mess arou d with it. Never feeding more than weekly though

Jason, I’ve watched this video several times, I feed my male boa almost 2 years once a week size of body or little smaller. He his hunting 24/7 and mistakes my hand for food anytime I try to grab him to hold or clean his cage. Any advice? I don’t want a snake hunting all day every day

Ripping and running yeah that’s pretty simple, he’s obviously not getting the full nutrition and calories he needs for prey items that size, this whole theory of not wanting to see a lump in the snake is silly, in the wild snakes take down things that are way thicker then the thickest part of their body. If he seems hungry feed a larger prey item, if it ends up being cage aggression then try hook training him, it’s a very simple method that most boa keepers use, basically if you intending to handle the boa take a snake hook and pet it on its cheek a few times until it smells the hook and realizes it’s not feeding time then instantly grab it and pull him out of his cage, this will teach him that the hook indicates it’s time to be handles and when the cage opens but no hook , he will realize it’s most likely eating time.

I have gotten a boa in from a rescue she is an adult boa i waiting until she was here about 2 week thw feed her a large rat wait two more weeks feed her again but the thing is shes not used the bathroom so do i need to wait to feed her again?

VarietyHD snakes do weird shit lol. If they are breeding size it could be because they are focused on breeding or going into season. Some just go off feed for the winter as well.

Besides the first 6 months or so you shouldn't feed weekly. Personally I start mine on Hoppers every 10 days. There's nothing wrong with feeding weekly at the beginning like Jason said that works as well but I've never needed to do it. I wouldn't feed only quail, but you can definitely feed quail. But I wouldn't do it every week. I was lucky enough to find a veterinarian who started off as a herpetologist. He started off his career in South America with anacondas and boas and he bounced back and forth from Africa Asia and South America and worked with large constrictors primarily. During this time he also was in school to become a veterinarian. He has around 150 snakes and more than half of them are boas or anacondas. He has allowed me to sit in on autopsies seven times. With the exception of one snake, all of them died from overfeeding. A couple of them were very obviously obese. They were being fed jumbo rats every two weeks and the Boaz died around 10 years old give or take. but there were a couple that if you saw them you would have no idea they were overweight. They looked healthy they had a decent shape to them but the problem was they we're consistently fed weekly for the first four or five years and even though they looked good from the outside, the fat build-up started internally and was around the organs and worked its way out. And it killed them. now there is more than one way to skin a cat. You can do multiple different feeding methods. The first year that I have my boas, depending on size I will feed them between every 10 days and every 30 days. I do not feed any prey items that are not weaned because of the milk that they can carry can make the boas sick so Hoppers I do every 10 days adult mice I do every 10 to 14 days weaned rats I do around every 14 days small rats I usually do every 16 to 18 days but if the boa is a high metabolism thinner animal I will do every two weeks if it has a very slow metabolism and is prone to being chunky I will do every 3 weeks. Medium rats I do every 3 weeks and large rats I do once a month. Most powers will be totally fine on large rats and never need anything bigger.I believe my vet has around eighty-five to ninety boas not counting the anacondas and only four of them need anything bigger than large rats. and it took almost 10 years for them to need anything bigger. He generally feeds 1 lb rabbits instead of jumbo rats and he feeds them every five to six weeks. But at the suggestion of him and multiple herpetologists that I spoke with as well as zoologists and a couple breeders, I have Incorporated food cycling.the end goal there, is for adult bow has to be taken off of food completely from November till the end of February and during the summer they will be fed more often. I did it for the first time this year but my younger Bo was either took a couple months off or I fed them once a month for the entire winter. my older but we took three months off and my anaconda took two and a half months off.what this does, is allow the excess fat that is built up around them to be burned off and it stimulates muscle growth and promotes overall growth. I saw phenomenal results. all of them grew during this time and none of them became underweight. Now it was only my first year doing it as they get older I will do longer breaks in between but it basically mimics the type of feeding that they do in the wild. Because our winter correlates with their dry seasonwhere food is not as available. And it is extremely good for them if you do it properly but I would definitely suggest researching it. Vince Russo who wrote the complete boa constrictor guide is someone who pushes this feeding I know not everyone does it and you don't have to do it if you own boas but after researching and talking to scientists and veterinarians and people who specialize in them, this seemed like the best thing for my snakes and it has worked wonderfully so far. Jason is one of the few breeders that I trust and that I have heard my veterinarian speak well of. I know he doesn't do things like I do them and I will admit that he has forgotten more about boas that I know, but there are a lot of people out there who have had boas for 20 years and are terrible keepers and Jason is one of the good ones. Sorry I wrote so much but I'm very passionate.

I do not and I do not recommend it. Every snake is going to be different so just like people. Some can go five times a day and others can go one time a day while eating the exact same thing. You should not use that as a deciding factor on went to feed next in my opinion
